Rubel Shelly: Water of the Word
Belief and water baptism saves or the Holy Spirit bubbling up as Holy Spirit baptism?Jesus and the Samaritan Woman (John 4:1-42) Our rough, rough notes in review.
The Living Water as the Word or Spirit or Mind of Christ narrowly constricts Christian teaching and worship.
The urge for the Living Water to be the direct operation of the Holy Spirit gives the usurper undue power to teach false doctrine and claim that he is doing it "by the selection, training and empowerment by the sovereign grace of God."
This leaves the "audience" helpless and utterly destroys the power of the Spirit of Christ which inspired the entire Bible. This is the way to deny that Christ came in the "flesh" to deliver His power into Words understood by the human senses.
By denying the power of the Word as it has been delivered we do not give others the power to make up "doctrines" and COLOR IT CHRISTIAN.
Therefore, both "sides" have to keep their hands out of Christ's Water bucket and allow everyone to be refreshed by giving heed to the Word. This is the only truly "worship" concept involved witht the church where individuals "synagogues" or "schools" and not "worships" in the pagan ritual sense.
The Bible almost universally associates water which is the basis of all humanlife with the Word of Christ which He defined as spirit and life which we drink. Christ put the refreshing water symbol into His Words. Peter said that it is by "giving heed" to these words beginning with the prophets through the Spirit of Christ (1 Pet 1:11) that Christ the Morning Star rises in our heart.
By making this "water" into the subjective baptism of the Holy Spirit we destroy any standard for "testing the Spirits." Therefore, Peter and others insist that our teaching and "singing" be with the Word "as it has been taught." The reason is that the "many" which Satan will always get into dominant pulpits are teaching false doctrine to deliberately lead people to their "father" the Devil whom Jesus defined as a liar because he "speaks on his own."
The absolute law of the Synagogue permitted translation and discussion but outlawed "allegorizing" or applicating the Bible to "make it relevent to the times." Jesus identified the Pharisee as those who ignored the commands of God by making up his own and the purpose was to "pump up" the sermonizing with long-winded prayers and sermons on his road to "stealing houses of widows. And he identified the Devil as one who "spoke on his own."
The moment we begin to improvize our "worship" as giving heed to Christ by giving heed to His Word by doing book reviews or promoting heresy out of the latest pop psychology book we open up the process for the "spirits" to be the "spirits of demons" teaching lies.
Therefore, "keep it simple, stupid" does not mean, "keep it stupid, simple." Then the rest of us can test the spirits and if you deviate then we know that you are a false teacher.
Paul insisted that even if one presumes to be inspired in Corinth he should just sit down and shut up unless there is another inspired person to validate his "revelation." This had the effect of looking to Paul if they needed further instruction.
Because the object seems to be to make the living water into the Holy Spirit as a "worship experience" we will test the spirits to see that water and the "spirit" always speaks of the Mind of Christ which to us is in the Words of Christ.
Rubel Shelly: That unexpected request and response became the springboard for all that follows. "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' " Jesus said, "you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."At this point, we have come to the same impasse as Nicodemus and Jesus about being born "again" or "from above."
In chapter 3, Nicodemus is thinking "flesh-event" or "second chance to get things right down here"; Jesus is talking about "Spirit-event" or "one-and-only chance to experience life from above." In chapter 4, the woman is thinking "cold water from a deep well" or "my gift to Jesus"; Jesus is talking about "spiritual refreshment from above" or "God's gift to a woman of Samaria."
Jesus spoke of one born in the flesh needing to be born AGAIN of the human spirit. I don't know where Rubel Shelly got his translation. The NIV adds a footnote: a3 Or 'born from above'; also in verse 7. However, verse 7 is translated in the NIV as "born again." Born "again" speaks of the SECOND in the numerical sense and not the the ORIGIN of the birth. So agrees the NAS, NKJV, RSV (anew),FALSE TEACHING: THERE IS NO IMPASSE. No one denies that we are saved by the BLOOD or by Jesus Christ. However, God uses human means for dispensing His Grace. We do not get a certificate of good faith without obeying God's Commands.
Jesus replied, "With all the earnestness I possess I tell you this: Unless you are born again, you can never get into the Kingdom of God. John 3:3LIV
The question is "how can Nicodemus a grown man be BORN AGAIN." The new birth does not involve the physical birth. Therefore, to be born again is to be born of water which involves water baptism: we are born OUT of the water.
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man (already born of the flesh)
be born of WATER (H20) and of the SPIRIT,
he CANNOT ENTER into the kingdom of God. John 3:5
How could one be baptized by the Holy Spirit while he CANNOT ENTER the kingdom?
Nicodemus confesses that God is with Jesus
How can a MAN be born when he is OLD: From the WOMB.
EXCEPT a MAN
That which is born of FLESH
IS FLESH
Jesus responds:
be born AGAIN he cannot SEE the kingdom of God
Jesus answered, Amen, Amen, Except a MAN be born
- of WATER
- and
- of SPIRIT
That which is born of SPIRIT
- Is
- SPIRIT
The Greek word does not speak of the BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Again is:
Anothen (g509) an'-o-then; from 507; from above; by anal. from the first; by impl. anew: - from above, again, from the beginning (very first), the top.
And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; Mt.27:51
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. Ja.3:17
Ano (g507) an'-o; adv. from 473; upward or on the top: - above, brim, high, up.
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Col 2:10
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Col 2:11
How and when?
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col 2:12
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Col 2:13
IF ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Col.3:1
Rubel Shelly: In chapter 3, Nicodemus is thinking "flesh-event" or "second chance to get things right down here"; Jesus is talking about "Spirit-event" or "one-and-only chance to experience life from above." In chapter 4, the woman is thinking "cold water from a deep well" or "my gift to Jesus"; Jesus is talking about "spiritual refreshment from above" or "God's gift to a woman of Samaria."
Nicodemus was speaking of PHYSICAL BIRTH but Jesus taught Him about birth of WATER and SPIRIT or Water and the WORD.Because both the PLACE of Gerezim and the PLACE of Mount Zion was the PHYSICAL PLACE for worship in fleshly ordinances, Jesus told the woman that the new PLACE was in the human spirit. This is the only PLACE where God seeks worshipers who have been washed internally and externally. Worship in Spirit, according to Paul, was in the SPIRIT. The only resource for worship in truth was to give heed to God by giving heed to HIS words and not the words of a man like Timothy who was instructed by Paul. The TIMES OF REFRESHING is identical to having A holy spirit so that we can meet God, one at a time and without any TEAMS to escort us, in our own mind. The ABOVE is a rebirth of the MIND or SPIRIT.
The only thing the woman could take with her in worship would be the WORD which Jesus says is SPIRIT and LIFE to the person who is born AGAIN.
Rubel Shelly: Have you ever noticed the Bible verse engraved on the baptistery platform in the foyer of this building? The original suggestion someone made was to put Mark 16:16 on it
"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved."But the verse eventually imprinted was from this text -
"The water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
The Lord's Supper is related to the DEATH of Christ. We show forth or preach His death. However, only in baptism do we personally accept that death for OUR death. Therefore, the Lord's Supper is a form of the shedding of BLOOD for our sins. Form or anti-type means INSTEAD OF. Therefore, by putting the focus on water as the personal Holy Spirit this "holy communion" or Catholic "Eucharist" claims the Spirit without being baptized. Rubel Shelly's "supper" takes lightly the blood of Christ. The Lord's Supper is a MEMORIAL and not a means of grace by which we get SPIRITUAL POWER gushing out as we eat the memorial to TEACH the death.
The seven spirits which would rest on Jesus Christ was not a third member of the Godhead who superceded Jesus Christ. Rather,
AND there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: Isa 11:1
The seven-branched Menorah in the Holy Place represented the seven spirits of Christ bring LIGHT and not excitement:
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; Isa 11: 2
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: Isa 11: 3
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath (same as holy spirit) of his lips shall he slay the wicked. Isa 11: 4
Not all receive the SPIRITS in a supernatural way.
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 1Co.12:8
Paul prayed:
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: Eph 1:17
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, Eph 1:18
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Eph 1:19
Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Eph 1:20
Paul connects baptism to our faith in the same operation of God.
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col.2:12
Paul continued in the second chapter to connect this to our baptism:
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Eph 2: 4
Even when we were dead in sins, hath QUICKENED (regenerated) us together WITH Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Ephesians 2:5
And hath RAISED us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places IN Christ Jesus: Ephesians 2:6
Paul defined this as Baptism and not grace through faith WITHOUT baptism to accept that grace:
In Colossians
Buried with him in BAPTISM, wherein also ye are RISEN with him through the faith of the OPERATION of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col.2:12
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Col 2:13
And in Romans 6
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Rom 6:2
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Rom 6:3
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6:4
For if we have been planted together in the likeness (Form) of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Rom 6:5
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Rom 6:6
We will see later that the LIVING WATER is the word which overflows. The self hewn cisterns gush forth water because the are cracked potes.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:38
(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) John 7:39
Belly means HEART in a figurative sense.
The HOLY SPIRIT does not live in our belly! Jesus showed that what comes out of a person relates to the mind or heart. The only thing which flows out is the WORDS of Christ which are spirit and life if one is regenerated:
And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? Matt 15:16
Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? Matt 15:17
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Matt 15:18
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false

1 John 5:s, blasphemies: Matt 15:19
In another sense, what flows out of the belly in the sense of the inner man is the Word of God OR it is the words of the Devil who "speaks on his own."
Jesus Christ in Spirit form was the ANOTHER or fuller Comforter who would GUIDE the apostles into all truth:
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18
Paul will say in 1 Cor 2 that The Holy Spirit is to God what our spirit is to us. Therefore, what humans receive is not to become A SECOND INCARNATION: OUR spirit will become holy because we have the MIND OF CHRIST.
Pneuma (g4151) pnyoo'-mah; from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by anal. or fig. a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by impl.) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, doemon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit: - ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind. Comp. 5590.
What flows from our belly or spirit or innermost being is the WATER OF THE WORD.
Paul who was an EARTHEN VESSEL which holds water better than a wineskin, said that the Lord's Supper is where we SHOW FORTH or "preach" the DEATH of Christ. It is not a new agapae which was a pagan feast WITH and FOR dead ancestors rather than preaching Jesus Crucified. When Jesus meets with us it is said that He will evangelize and grieve with us about His DEATH:
Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church (ekklesia or synagogue) will I sing praise unto thee. Heb.2:12
Preach the gospel: Apaggelo (g518) ap-ang-el'-lo; from 575 and the base of 32; to announce: - bring word (again), declare, report, shew (again), tell.
Sing is not singy-clappy but: Apalgeo (g524) ap-alg-eh'-o; from 575 and algeo , (to smart); to grieve out, i.e. become apathetic: - be past feeling
Rubel Shelly: But the verse eventually imprinted was from this text -
"The water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
Can you see how the table shared with the agapae has taken the BLOOD off and put WATER in its place? Again, the Lord's Supper is done in remembrance which means to PREACH the death of Jesus Christ. That, surprise, surprise, is where the BLOOD was shed. There is no connection between the Lord's Supper and the Holy Spirit as a Rubel Shelly "third member of the family of god."
We honor the final resurrection of Christ in BAPTISM which is a burial in water.
The BAPTISMAL WATER everyone USED was H20: the water which comes down from RAINS. The WATER OF THE WORD is free of charge (Isaiah 55), is not connected to baptism but to the WORD of God which false profits repackages and retails.
We have noted in other reviews that John York and Rubel Shelly claim that the Israelites in the wilderness were "baptized by the Holy Spirit." Furthermore, this becomes a pattern for Christian worship and community. However, the Bible knows that they were "turned over to worship the starry host because of their musical idolatry."
Going further, they CLAIM that the Corinthians were also "baptized by the Holy Spirit."
Now, rather than connecting baptism to salvation as Jesus commanded and Paul preached, the "true" baptism is now a "well of water" or the Holy Spirit baptism with water baptism the Baptist baptism.
The truth is that an earthen vessel becomes a cistern which OVERFLOWS with what God put into it.
A cracked vessel GUSHES FORTH from the cracks its OWN teaching.
You will see what I mean later on.
However, in both Amos and Isaiah 5, the "wineskin" worship with instrumental music caused the people to hunger and thirst for the Word of God. The Word is the "drink" and Jesus is not promising the baptism of the Holy Spirit "person" meaning supernatural gifts. In the eucharist, as in pagan believer's baptism,
When the priest pronounces the words of consecration, he believes he:
"...reaches up to heaven and brings Christ down from His throne, and places Him upon the altar to be offered up again" (Faith of Millions, O'Brien, 243-244).
Later, we will hear Peter make some direct commands:
First, the Word of God is the only resource for worship in song or sermon.
Second, they Word cannot tolerate any further application, explication or expounding.
Third, because the Word is given by Christ the Spirit and to repudiate it as the resource for worship repudiates Christ. And to sell your body to "further expound" the Word of the Holy God of the Universe is to spit in His face.
Isaiah has God warning that His Word is His Water: if you don't allow the "water of the word cycle" to work then you are the restrainers of the waters?
JESUS CHRIST ILLUSTRATED THE MEANING OF BAPTISM as CONVERSION
And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, Matthew 18:2
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become (be born) AS little children,
ye SHALL NOT enter into the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3
JESUS TOLD NICODEMUS THE SAME THING USING BORN AGAIN
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mothers womb, and be born? John 3:4
The question is how can Nicodemus a grown man be BORN AGAIN. The new birth does not involve the physical birth.
John 3:5
Rubel Shelly says: "The water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" is the Holy Spirit. But Jesus said MY WORDS are SPIRIT and LIFE. You eat and drink the Word. Amos 5, 6 and 8 speaks of the extorting clergy who used wine, women and song to starve the people to spiritual death.
But, if Rubel Shelly is right, and WATER really means SPIRIT then what does SPIRIT mean? The word "and" or kai connects WATER + SPIRIT. Therefore, Bible 101aaa is flunked.
Jesus has connected being CONVERTED to BEING BORN of water and the Spirit. Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon notes that what Jesus promised was A holy spirit at baptism and not the HOLY SPIRIT flowing out during communion:
Palingenesia 1 [genesis] a being born again, new birth; used by Cic. of his restoration after exile:-- hence, in NTest.,1. the resurrection.
2. regeneration by baptism.
Anazôgr-êsis , eôs, hê, restoration to life
Unless God washes our spirits WHILE we are being baptized then--they CLAIM--God as pure or holy (wholly) Spirit comes to dwell in the TEMPLE of OUR spirit before it has been swept and washed by God.
purga-men ,
I. What was annually swept or washed from the temple of Vesta, i. e. the dirt or filth swept out, the sweepings, offscourings, Ov. F. 6, 713 and 227; v. stercus.--
II. A means of purgation, purification, or expiation: aquae, i. e. baptism
III. Purity, clearness,
regenera-tio , o-nis, f. [regenero] , a being born again, regeneration (eccl. Lat.), Aug. Civ. Dei, 20, 5; Vulg. Matt. 19, 28; id. Tit. 3, 5: lavacrum regenerationis, of baptism, Aug. Civ. Dei, 22, 8, 5.
Paliggenesia (g3824) pal-ing-ghen-es-ee'-ah; from 3825 and 1078; (spiritual) rebirth (the state or the act), i.e. (fig.) spiritual renovation; spec. Messianic restoration: - regeneration.
For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Tit 3:3
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Tit 3:4
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,
by the washing of regeneration,
and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Tit 3:5
Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit does not need to be washed to be regenerated so that the Holy Spirit can live in our human spirit without which we CANNOT, SHALL NOT be able to worship God in the new PLACE of A holy spirit and not in BODY WORSHIP.
Palig-genesia , hê, rebirth, regeneration, of the world, palingenesias hêgemones, of Noah and his sons, Corp.Herm.3.3; of persons, beginning of a new life, eis p. horman Ph.1.159 , cf. Luc.Musc.Enc.7: hence of restoration after exile
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 1 Peter 3:20
And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh,
but an appeal to God for a good conscience--
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Peter 3:21NAS
Therefore Jesus lays a stumbling block for those who would deny that baptism is necessary because it calls God a liar and marks one as a traitor.
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not SHALL be DAMNED. Mark 16:16
"BELIEVETH NOT" means that they disobeyed by rejecting baptism.
Apisteo (g569) means to be unbelieving, meaning to disobey
Apistos (g571) disbelieving, i.e. without Christian faith, a heathen, untrustworthy (person), faithless, infidel.
"Rejected" means that they call God a liar and are still damned because they are still on Satan's team. Rejecteth is:
Atheteo (g114) means to DISESTEEM, DESPISE, disannul, frustrate, bring to nought, reject. It means a TREACHEROUS PERSON. It includes Kategoros an accuser, a BETRAYER.
> It cannot be repackaged, watered down and retailed:HO, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Isaiah 55:1
Did you see the SYMBOL there: H20 or HO. The WATER is not the SPIRIT as a little person but the water is the WORD of God which gives Spirit and Life.
> It cannot be subject to "private interpretation" in explicating, applicating and further expounding:
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. Isaiah 55: 8
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55: 9
> God creates the water cycle: we can plant and water but the Water is what does the work but only if it is recycled through others who then return it to God in praise:
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: Isaiah 55: 10
> The water is personified: it is its own interpreter and preacher and you don't need "sister singers" to make it work:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it Isaiah 55: 11
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Matt 15:18
> God's Spirit is upon us when His Words are in us. They do not get destroyed by going through the Shelly Sifter of time, philosophy and the Bible writers own personal agenda. They do not "wear out" just as the water of the flood is the same water we drink:
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the (1) Lord; (2) My spirit that is upon thee, and (3) my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seeds seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Is.59:21
The WORDS of God are preserved. A cracked pot or broken cistern causes HIS OWN WORDS to gush forth. Therefore, SELF-SPEAK and calling God a liar about baptism means that it CANNOT hold or retain the WORDS of God long enough to teach them "as they have been taught."
The Bible personifies THOUGHT, Truth and Spirit. Therefore, the Holy Spirit does not GUSH FORTH in any connection with the Lord's Table.
For the WORD of the (1) Lord is right; and all his works are done in TRUTH. Psa 33:4
By the (2) WORD of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the (3) BREATH of his MOUTH. Psa 33:6
Mouth: Peh (h6310) peh; from 6284; the mouth (as the means of blowing)
Breath is SPIRIT: Ruwach (h7307) roo'-akh, roo'-akh; from 7306; wind; by resemblance breath... by resemblance SPIRIT, but only of a rational being (includ. its EXPRESSION and FUNCTIONS)
Paul warned against those who bewitch by claiming to have the supernatural gift of revealing the word. Then, he identified the foolish bewitchers and rejecting baptism:
O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
- Jesus Christ hath been
- evidently set forth, crucified among you? Galatians 3:1
In the Greek world, rhetoricians, sOPHISts (serpents), singers and musicians were identified as sorcerers. Because they had not role to play in non-sacrificial systems, they were all PARASITES. They were SECTARIANS of the hypocrite tribe and condemned by Jesus.
Baskaino (g940) bas-kah'ee-no; akin to 5335; to malign, i.e. (by extens.) to fascinate (by false representations): - bewitch.

Ophis (g3789) of'-is; prob. from 3700 (through the idea of sharpness of vision); a snake, fig. (as a type of sly cunning) an artful malicious person, espec. Satan: - serpent.

Those who BEWITCH are always:
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, Ro.1:22
Phasko (g5335) fas'-ko; prol. from the same as 5346; to assert: - affirm, profess, say.
John in Revelation warned against those who claim to be apostles by receiving the baptism of the holy spirit and therefore inspired:
UNTO the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks (seven spirits of Christ); Rev2:1
I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: Re.2:2
Paul's super apostles were:

Playto, Cratylus says "the part of appropriative, coercive, hunting art which hunts animals, land animals, tame animals, man, privately, for pay, is paid in cash, claims to give education, and is a hunt after rich and promising youths, must--so our present argument concludes--be called sophistry.
Paul concludes that one receives the Spirit by hearing and believing the Word and obeying it:
This only would I learn of you,
- Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law,
- or (Received ye the Spirit) by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:2
- For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26
- For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27
God, through Zechariah, shows how people so damage their spirits to such an extent that they no longer belong to God. Therefore, as He did the nation of Israel, He allowed them to walk in their own ways and worship like the nations.
But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Zechariah 7:11
They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry. Zechariah 7:12
Therefore it is come to pass, that
as he cried, and they would not hear;
so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts: Zechariah 7:13

As a result of the musical idolatry at Mount Gerezim, where the Samaritan woman may or may not have attended, God warned against drinking the waters (word) of other nations.
Rubel Shelly: This is not the first time in John that water has been used to symbolize the fullness of life that comes to human beings as the "gift" (Gk, dorea) of God.John is hardly the only New Testament writer to make this same connection between the gift of God's Spirit and heavenly renewal.
Do you know the promise of Acts 2:38? "Peter said to them, 'Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.' "
Do you recall the parallel statement from the same apostle at Acts 3:19?
"Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah appointed for you, that is, Jesus."
No. Water symbolizes the Spirit or Mind of Christ which to us is the Word of Christ. The FULLNESS dogma is the charismatic or Pentecostal belief that we are personally a "second incarnation" of God Who IS pure or Holy Spirit. Christ "poured out" that Spirit on the day of Pentecost which was evidenced by the Apostles speaking the Word of God not only in the "dialects" of the Greek world but also its "tongues" or minor dialects. No "scholar" could do this and therefore it was a SIGN that the apostles spoke from Christ. Our mind or spirit is renewed by the Spirit as we are renewed by the Word of the Spirit.
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; Ep.4:23
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Col.3:10Neo is: Neos (g3501) neh'-os; includ. the comp. neoteros , neh-o'-ter- os; a prim. word; "new", i.e. (of persons) youthful, or (of things) fresh; fig. regenerate: - new, young
Renewed is: Anakainoo (g341) an-ak-ahee-no'-o; from 303 and a der. of 2537; to renovate: - renew.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,
by the washing of regeneration,
Loutron (g3067) loo-tron'; from 3068; a bath, i.e. (fig.) baptism: - washing.
No one is ever said to be WASHED by the Spirit. However,
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, Ep.5:26
and renewing (anakainosis) of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:5
Paliggenesia (g3824) pal-ing-ghen-es-ee'-ah; from 3825 and 1078; (spiritual) rebirth (the state or the act), i.e. (fig.) spiritual renovation; spec. Messianic restoration: - regeneration.
The SPIRIT is not shed by the Spirit as a third member of Rubel Shelly's polytheism. Rather, Paul says that the Holy Spirit is to God what our spirit is to us and he concludes "but we have the MIND of Christ."
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Tit 3:6
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Tit 3:7
Justified is the Greek:
Dikaioo (g1344) dik-ah-yo'-o; from 1342; to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent: - free, justify (-ier), be righteous.
This word means "freed from sin" and the same Paul says that this is accomplished at baptism. Why? because the only way WE can be freed from sin is to be CLOTHED with Christ:
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6:4
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Rom 6:5
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin Rom 6:6
For he that is dead is freed (Dikaioo g1344) from sin.Ro.6:7
If we are NOT regenerated at the time and place of baptism then we are still DEAD MEN WALKING because we call God a liar and this is the MARK that people are very happy to remain on Satan's team.
The HOLY SPIRIT hath not flesh and bones and needs no WASHING OF REGENERATION. Neither does the HOLY SPIRIT need renewing. The SPIRIT being renewed is the HUMAN spirit. 1 Peter 3:21 says that baptism is not a body wash but the TIME and PLACE where we REQUEST A clear conscience or consiousness. A clear conscious answers to the gift of A holy spirit in Acts 2:38. The SPIRIT does not move into Rubel Shelly's carnal body as proven by the fact that the spirit OF Christ would speak what "he" heard from Christ. In the same way, Jesus the "son" spoke only what He heard from the "father" who dwelled within as THOUGHT.
Now the Holy Spirit as God does not need renewed. Therefore, the "new man" created in us is the renewal of OUR spirit to make it holy or sanctified for His service.
Jesus Christ sets up two FORMS to show that without BAPTISM which means CONVERSION you CANNOT, SHALL NOT enter the kingdom, Luke now shows by the same two forms that baptism confirms the STUMBLING BLOCK for those who would be traitors and not suitable for the eternal kingdom of God in another dimension.
Jesus said that unless you be converted and become AS a little child you SHALL NOT enter the kingdom.
He told Nicodemus unless he was born of WATER and SPIRIT he CANNOT enter the kingdom
Luke recording the actions of Peter showing that being CONVERTED is the same as being saved or having sins remitted:
He that believeth
Then Peter said unto them, Repent,
Repent ye therefore,
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 1 Pet 3:20and is baptized
and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christand be converted,
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body 1 Pet 3:21ashall be saved;
for the remission of sins,
that your sins may be blotted out,
but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Pet 3:21b
but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mk 16:16 [because the evil spirits have not been replaced with the 7 spirits of Christ all relating to knowledge: able to keep from GUSHING OUT of cracked pots.]
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38[Your spirit is still unholy because it is unwashed]
when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Acts 3:19
Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. 1 Pe 3:22
Can Rubel Shelly take pay for telling people that "your sins may be blotted out" SO THAT you can become CONVERTED? Or that God the Spirit will meet us in the PLACE of our spirit before HE sweeps out the demons? We are wise enough to know that the ultimate source of our salvation is God. However, God Whose methods we are too quick to criticize insists that He has the power to put His salvation is water:
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 1 Pe.3:20
Paul used Isaiah 28 to explain "speaking in tongues" in Corinth. Their primary sin was singing their own songs out of their own "spirit" rather than giving heed to the Word of Christ. God warned:
To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing (REST): yet they would not hear. Isaiah 28:12
But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. Isaiah 28:13
Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. Isaiah 28:14
"Jerusalem" stands for Sodom, Mt. Sinai, Egypt, Babylon or Nashville."
The Meaning of Refreshing:
The refreshing is not "exhilaration in worship caused by the Spirit inside of your body." That is some other physical or emotional abnormality: a good psychologist might help.
In Acts 3:19:
Andronikos (g408) an-dron'-ee-kos; from 435 and 3534; man of victory; Andronicos, an Isr.: - Andronicus.
Nikos (g3534) nee'-kos; from 3529; a conquest (concr.), i.e. (by impl.) triumph: - victory.
Therefore, this means a triumph but not "water pouring from heaven." We become new creatures because Christ transfers us into a spiritual kingdom.
In Acts 2:38 this is not the gift of the personal 1/3 godhead to live in our carnal body. Rather, the "Holy Spirit" is the Mind of Christ according to Paul in 1 Cor. 2.
To have the Mind of Christ means that we have His Spirit which is His mental disposition.
Peter used the word "clear conscience" which means that our consciousness is cleared of all obstacles so that we become a co-perceiver with Christ through His Word.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation (creation); the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Co.5:17
And again:
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Tit.3:5
The Holy Ghost as a "person" does not need renewing. Therefore, Walter Scott agrees with the Bible and history that this is A personal holy spirit after it has been washed by water and the Word:
And have put on the new self (new birth), which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Col.3:10
Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. Col 3:11
The new "worship" does not demand that we all affirm the Samaritans and Gentiles. It simply means that all old traditions are set aside so that you can worship by giving heed to the Word of Christ which is Spirit which is that which is written:
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Col 3:15
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Col 3:16
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name (authority of) of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Col 3:17
The Samaritans and Jews used "music" in their temple system and in the worship of idols to which God had turned them over. Therefore, Paul did not hint at a "musical" word in connection with spiritual worship of God.
Rubel Shelly: Repentance does not lead to baptism. It leads to the
- gift of the Holy Spirit,
- to times of refreshing from God's presence,
- to a personal relationship with Jesus Messiah! .
Jeremiah and Jesus contradicted this:Therefore this is what the LORD says: "If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them. Je.15:19
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Jer 13:3
If you are stealing from the purses of widows and hard working people, and if you repent, you just quit stealing tithes and offerings. That does NOT cause the HOLY SPIRIT to enter into your body.
Jesus said, if you accept my counsel then I will forgive your sins. Jesus called that being saved and Paul called it the forgiveness of sins. There is no supernatural "perfectionism" or "FULLNESS" required to be born like a tiny little baby who knows just about nothing:
First: This is what I find in my Bible:
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16
Second: And Peter thought that repentance led directly to Baptism. No one is said to have received the HOLY GHOST by believing:
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ
- for the forgiveness of your sins.
- And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Ac.2:38
Conclusion: If the "logic" of Rubel Shelly is correct (and all of history is wrong and therefore "all who came before him were thieves and liars") then one is saved BEFORE BELIEVING. And gift of A personal spirit which is holy comes BEFORE sins are forgiven. This says that the spirit of God dwells in our heart or mind BEFORE the demons are swept out.
There can be no personal "holy spirit" able to interact with Christ the Spirit until our sins are forgiven.
Repentance and baptism leads to the forgiveness of sins.
This removes the rubble from our eyes so that we can have a clear or co-perception with Christ.
This is the "gift of A holy spirit" or purified MIND.
This does not lead to a supernatural experience in worship. Rather:
Fulness or perfection is only in Christ Jesus
Jesus didn't come as "lil ole winemaker or wine drinker" or provider of a sexual stimulus or "exhilarated worship experience." Jesus is first of all Rabbi or Master teacher: He is the only one with a Phd and we are not ritual worshipers but STUDENTS. We shall all be taught of and by God.
And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: Matt 7:28
For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Matt 7:29 [Book writers and peddlers]
Jesus comes as Divine Teacher and not Worship Leader or Preacher:
Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. John 12:44
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. John 12: 45
I am come a light into the world, that
whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. John 12: 46
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. Ps.119:130
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isa 8:20
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 2 Pet 1:19
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. John 12: 47
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him:
the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. John 12: 48
This is true because the Word of Christ is the Word of God:
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. John 12: 49
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. John 12: 50
The historical "trinity" is often explained as the THOUGHT is the father, the WORD is the Son and the Spirit is the breath by which God speaks through a human being. Therefore, the FATHER as Thought spoken by the WORD as Son said that:
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63
The "son" is defined by his speaking the thoughts of the "father." Jesus said that the Devil was a liar because he spoke ON HIS OWN.
Dr. Shelly can say that: "Repentance does not lead to baptism."
One might as well say that "hearing does not lead to belief."
And that is what Calvinism says: even faith is a gift which you cannot get from hearing the Word of God.
Rubel Shelly: Baptism is significant along the path that leads from repentance to new life, but baptism is a means to an end and not an end in itself.Baptismal regeneration is a doctrine nobody in our tradition ever set out to teach, I am sure. Yet teach it we did by offering baptism as the end of a conversion process.
We truly doubt that anyone has ever been instructed that "baptism is the end of the process." Peter said that it is at baptism that we REQUEST A clear conscience or A holy spirit. The Bible never gives a NEW BIRTH simply by believing Rubel Shelly's seven facts ABOUT JESUS or now Just Jesus. Here is what the Bible inspired by God Incarnate inspired at His FIRST and only INCARNATION:The beginning or most important part of the gospel Mark 1. Which ones of these do we receive by REPUDIATING baptism and claiming Zwingli's lie of faith-only.
