Progressive is regressive "back to Babylon" and especially to the Stone Movement which had nothing in common with the historic Restoration of the Church of Christ promoted by John Calvin and continued in England and Ireland before the Campbells and others came to America and gained freedom of speech and the press.
Progressive in the Civil arena means that the Constitution is a "living document" which changes with the times.
Progressive in the Religious arena means that the Bible is like the Constitution: those who are Apostolic or rest on the teachings of the Apostoles and Prophets for all times are mocked as "strict constructionists." By looking at how "progressive" take snippets and make up their own Bible, we can see that progressive is almost always ANTI-Biblical. For Instance, Randy Harriss (ACU) has been the darling guiding blight of the "progressives." Progressive is regressive "back to Babylon" and especially to the Stone Movement which had nothing in common with the historic Restoration of the Church of Christ promoted by John Calvin and continued in England and Ireland before the Campbells and others came to America and gained freedom of speech and the press.
Progressive in the Civil arena means that the Constitution is a "living document" which changes with the times.
Progressive in the Religious arena means that the Bible is like the Constitution: those who are Apostolic or rest on the teachings of the Apostoles and Prophets for all times are mocked as "strict constructionists." By looking at how "progressive" take snippets and make up their own Bible, we can see that progressive is almost always ANTI-Biblical. This is the HIGH CHURCH patternism of the Disciples-Christian churches.
While claiming to RESTORE the church, Places like ACU and Lipscomb university see Randy Harris as a guide through the Grizzly Bear called the Bible. For Instance, Randy Harriss (ACU) has been the darling guiding blight of the "progressives." In God Work he notes An You can see that tampering with mysticism (witchcraft) leads personal opinions to trump the direct command to teach that which has been taught: JESUS SAID DOCTORS OF THE LAW TAKE AWAY THE KEY TO KNOWLEDGE--FOR A PRICE, ALWAYS FOR A PRICE.

We have not seen such evil in a ruler since the days of Antiochus in 168 B.C. This is that beast demon spirit that will transform the peacemaking Antichrist into the abominably evil 666 Beast of the Apocalypse. an antichristian force of the ultimate climactic abominable evil. This person the prophet Daniel and the apostle John describe is a malevolent and godless personage speaking abominable and unheard of things. We are looking here at a person of ultimate evil.
"Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling to meet him, we beg you, brethren, not to be quickly shaken in mind or excited, either by spirit or by word, or by letter purporting to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God." Although he identifies himself as a preacher, he tells us he does a bit of light gambling (p. 40). He enjoys movies about Satan (p. 39). He laughingly tells us he lied (p. 61).THE FOUNDATION IS THE LIE THAT CHURCHES OF CHRIST SECTED OUT OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.
He concludes this section by saying, "What I've described to you is basically my postmodernism. That is, I am learning to make peace with a loss of certainty." In contrast, Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth" (John 8:32).
[12] Harris feels the historic evidence for Christ's resurrection is not compelling. He says "It is somewhere between Elvis at the 7-11 and the Gettysburg Address." He goes on to say, "The Holy Spirit is the continuing presence of God that testifies in us to the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (p. 79). I do believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of each Christian, but I am curious about the way and manner of the Spirit's testifying to Bro. Harris. Is it by dreams and visions, or a still small voice? Is it like the trumpet sound on Sinai or a nudge within? The Spirit speaks to me and every other Christian through the Scripture, which he guided chosen men to write (II Pet. 1:20-21). Any other communications are of uncertain origin.
[7] He has a low view of Scripture. He speaks of the Apostle John "toss(ing) in little throwaway lines..." "John does this stuff on the Holy Spirit that we don't see in the synoptic" (p. 77). He thinks Paul "made a mess of the Corinthian's situation." Of Esther, he says "there is this crazy book of Esther" (p.89).
"I am a postmodern, mystic, panentheist. Happily situated in Churches of Christ. And I am going nowhere. You can be a postmodern, mystic, panentheist and be perfectly happy in this tradition" (p. 95).
[22] The most disturbing thing about this worthless book is that its author works as a mentor of students at ACU. He works "mostly with Bible majors" (p. 31). This helps explain the growing number of congregations, staffed by ACU-trained preachers, that have abandoned the goal of being the Church revealed in the Bible. They have settled for being like the Christian Churches rather than the old biblical model.
TO THE CONTRARY, THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST NEVER JOINED THE SAME LOSTNESS OF THE STONEITES.
We will show that the use of INSTRUMENTS along with SINGING is the clear definition of witchcraft or sorcery. The problem with the Progressive Church of Christ Sectarians is that they do not and perhaps CANNOT read the Words of Christ and define words within the context of the writings. It is true that Paul said that until they were converted (Baptized) the Jews would not be able to HEAR the word PREACHED by being READ in the synagogue or read BLACK text on BROWN paper.In The Christian Messenger for November, 1834, is quoted an article from the Millennial Harbinger (Campbell's paper) as follows:
"Or does he (Stone) think that one or two individuals, of and for themselves, should propose and effect a formal union among the hundred of congregations scattered over this continent, called Christians or Disciples, without calling upon the different congregations to express an opinion or a wish upon the subject?
We discover, or think we discover, a squinting at [14] some sort of precedency or priority in the claims of the writer of the above article," etc.
It is well known that Mr. Campbell insisted upon immersion before believers were received into fellowship, to which Stone answered:
"We cannot, with our present views, unite on the opinions that unimmersed persons cannot receive remission of sins."It is utterly impossible in the "fellowship cult" to accept the unbaptized as members meaning to participate and teach without TEACHING that Christ in the prophets was lying and that Jesus in fulfilment was lying about the commands to be baptized.
And though later on Stone came to believe in immersion in water for the remission of sins, there is no evidence that he ever made it a test of fellowship. And Stone DENIED that he could unite with the Church of Christ.

Future
of
the
Church
of
Christ
Liminality
There’s actually a technical word for the mess we find ourselves in: “liminality.” It’s a term from anthropology. It’s the condition of a human society that has just experienced major change. At times of liminality, people feel unsettled and make many false starts before finding a new status quo. This is from Wikipedia –
The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. One’s sense of identity dissolves to some extent, bringing about disorientation. Liminality is a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed – a situation which can lead to new perspectives.
CHANGE SUCH AS PROMISE KEEPERS PROMOTED DISSOCIATION OR DRIVING INTO MILD SCHIZOPHRENIA.

For instance, the "men's movement" makes its appeal through the phallic religion of ancient paganism and modern phylosophy and everyone gets aroused and falls into line:

If we are to repeat history, that nervous "end of the cycle" feeling will be acted out in a feeding-frenzy to establish "new programs" and to decide who will be the next "god-king" to lead us safely into the next millennium. This may look like signs of spiritual health but many observers note that it may be the "death rattles" of a Word-starved dying civilizations. Amos and Isaiah spoke of that music/starvation theme. Using the "wine" symbol, one observer noted that --
"Jingling, banging, and rattling accompanied heathen cults, and the frenzying shawms of a dozen ecstatic cries intoxicated the masses. Amid this euphoric farewell feast of a dying civilization, the voices of nonconformists were emerging from places of Jewish and early Christian worship ..." (Encyclopedia Judaica, 1971 ed., s.v. "Music")
In worship, this death-spasm may result because its "spirit" is "excitement" or "wine" rather than "Word" which gives life. By not anchoring faith in Christ's power to accomplish His task during His first advent the world might drug the church and its dying gasp might look exciting. This breakdown usually happens because --

Moreover, in this view of Spengler's, we were at present on the point of passing from what he called the period of Culture to Civilization, which is to say, from our periods of youthful, spontaneous, and wonderful creativity to those of

Therefore, just as they tried to "relight the fires" in king David but couldn't prevent his death, on page 88 Campbell (like Amos) notes that the period of "dying" is always marked by a "wine-like" urge which "resurrects" the Aztec pattern. While these urges are often the product of the immature Campbell notes that--
"Yet there is a great religious fervor and ferment evident among not only young people but old and middle-aged as well. The fervor, however, is in a mystical direction, and the teachers who seem to be saying most to many are those who have come to us
from a world that was formerly regarded as having left altogether behind in the great press forward of modern civilization, representing only archaic, out-lived manners of thinking. We have gurus galore..."
Drugs and Wine as Evidence of Mind Control
People under stress often return to ancient religious forms and beliefs because the "gods don't work any more." The universal belief of these systems was that true religion is best illustrated by drugs (wine or ecstasy as at Cane Ridge) which forces the "worship services" into an exciting period which "meets my needs" and brings me face to face with the "god" who hides except at periodic festivals. The ritual literally forced the gods to do what they didn't want to do. In the symbolism of the gospel of wine, the ritual feeds the exhausted wine with new yeast so that it releases its energies and "turns us on."
Unfortunately, the "turn on" demands a bigger and bigger "fix." Campbell notes the same urge in most native religions. We note again:
"Now the first and most important effect of a living mythological symbol is to waken and give guidance to the energies of life. It is an energy-releasing and directing sign, which not only 'turns you on,' as they say today,
but turns you on in a certain direction,
making you function a certain way--whichwill be one conducive to your participation in the life and purposes of a functioning social group." (Campbell, p. 89).
"when the symbols provided by the social group no longer work, and the symbols that do work are no longer of the group, the individual cracks away, becomes disassociated and disoriented, and we are confronted with what can only be named a pathology of the symbol." (Campbell, p. 89).

Signs of the Times Warning
Jeremiah connected the need for professional (professional worship music was always spiritual adultery) "musical worship teams" to the end-time period of a people. They were lost but didn't want to repent.
The solution, then and now, is to create artificial feelings of worship (sad songs or happy "praise" songs but no teaching songs) by the use of women trained to create a tranquilizing drug for the rational mind (endorphin) so their emotional nature could bear their lostness.
Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning (strike a musical note) women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come: Jeremiah 9:17
And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. Jeremiah 9:18
But, Jesus cast out the musical minstrels more or less violently like dung.

6. These opinions were anciently entertained, the universe itself being regarded not as a fabric but as a birth, a creation or genesis, and evolution. The idea of music as a demonic art implies that music is not considered on its merits alone, but points beyond itself and man to the demonic. Thus music can be understood as an invention and inspiration of demons, indeed almost as a demonic possession.
It may be interpreted as an imitation or image of demonic prototypes. The musician may be conceived of as a servant or assistant of demons. Demonic music may seduce or destroy human beings.
Conversely, however, demons can be influenced, conjured up, or exorcised by means of music. These notions are intimately related, although mostly antithetically, to those of music as a divine art [see next article]. Here too there is a characteristic connection with religion and the history of religion.
Of course, a precise definition of the demonic, e.g., by opposition to the divine, is not possible for all epochs. There are fluctuations in many areas. And only in cases where some antecedent division between (good) divinities and (evil) demons is already established can a corresponding dualism arise likewise in musical perspectives. Such conceptions had already been encoun tered quite early.
Like the ideas of music as a divine art, they extend from magical, via mythological, down to theological and philosophical, forms of thought and remain active at least into the baroque period.
Thereafter they fall victim in the course of a general process of secularization to an increasingly rational skepticism.
1. Primitive Peoples. The sounds of nature (thunder, water, wind, echo) seem to early man to be the voices of demonic beings, and a spirit is locked within the sounding instrument.
The narcotic ecstasy induced by music and dance is seen as superhumanly and demonically inspired. It leads to union with the demon world, or to participation in it,
or may serve as protection against it. Different kinds of music correspond respectively to different kinds of demon.
Certain demons have a special music pertaining to them, by which they may be influenced.
At all events, music and dance play an altogether central part in all activities of magic and witchcraft.
The power of shamans and medicine men depends on knowledge and mastery of the musical devices in this connection.
Similar magical-demonic elements survive in music, often more slightly modified, well into historical times. They may be recognized without difficulty even today in the concerted pealing of church bells, in the blowing of alphorns at the onset of darkness to frighten off evil demons, or even as a romantic evocation of atmosphere in advanced music, as, for example, in the Wolves' Ravine scene in Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz.
West Africans reconstructed their native drums in the New World, preponderantly as cult instruments. Small sets of two or, more often, three drums of graded sizes form an integral part of Afro-American rituals and, in the Caribbean, also of voodoo dances.
Only the skins of sacrificial animals may be used for membranes among Afro-Bahians in Brazil, who baptize their new drums, preferably with "holy" water obtained from a Roman Catholic church.
Drums in Haiti are sacred objects and may even represent the deity itself: as such they receive libations. One type of bongo drum--there exist at least four of these--has been adopted by Western rhythm bands, as has the conga.
"Yobal (Jubal). (Note: Jubilee or "a blast of trumpets" is from Jubal which means "to lead with triumph or pomp.") and Tobalkin (Tubal-Cain), the two brethren, the sons of Lamech, the blind man, who killed Cain, invented and made all kinds of instruments (or metal weapons) of music.
"Yobal made reed instruments, and harps, and flutes, and whistles,
and the devils went and dwelt inside them.
When men blew into the pipes, the devils sang inside them,
and sent out sounds from inside them. (Note: the "familiar spirit" of the Witch of Endor was an old "lifeless instrument" made of an old water or wineskin).Tobalkin made cymbals, and sistra, and tambourines (or drums). And lasciviousness and fornication increased among the children of Cain, and they had nothing to occupy them except fornication--now they had no obligation [to pay] tribute, and they had neither prince nor governor--
and eating, and drinking, and lasciviousness, and drunkenness,
and dancing and singing to instruments of music,
and the wanton sportings of the devils, (Israel: "rose up to play" and so did David in moving the ark from God's tabernacle to his)and the laughter which affordeth pleasure to the devils,
and the sounds of the furious lust of men neighing after women. And Satan, finding [his] opportunity in this work of error, rejoiced greatly, becausethereby he could compel the sons of Seth to come down from that holy mountain. There they had been made to occupy the place of that army [of angels] that fell [with Satan], there they were beloved by God, there they were held in honour by the angels, and were called "sons of God," even as the blessed David saith in the psalm, "I have said , Ye are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High." Ps. 82:6 (In Rev 18 the craftsmen and musicians will go with Babylon the great whore into hell).
The Bible and about three dozen
contemporaneous documents such as The Book of Enoch warns that if you
COME DOWN to the sound of instrumental music you will NEVER be able to
return. In many Biblical examples instruments which are mind-deranging
weapons the sounds are the MARKS that you HAVE fallen.

John called the rhetoricians, singers and instrument players SORCERS in
Revelation 18:23. All Greek musical terms speak of enchantment,
charming or sorcery. If you USE music when you are commanded to
assemble to teach what Jesus Christ commanded to be taught then you are
playing the role of a demon; the PLAY or musical idolatry at Mount
Sinia was DEMONISM (1 Cor 10)
The professional mourners or
celebrators are called only when the "body" is already dead and you
need a whole profession of musical performers to do religion. Like
little David playing on his harp, they are -- in a perverse way --
