Max Lucado says of Romans 6 that baptism does not save

Romans 6 says that Baptism identifies with the death of Jesus Christ. Max Lucado denies, we affirm.Max Lucado: The absolute MARK

John 17:14 I have given them thy word;
and the world hath hated them,
because they are not of the world,
even as I am not of the world.
John 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me
         I have given them;
that they may be one, even as we are one:
2Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly
in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Jer 23:17 They say still unto them that despise me,
        The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace;
and they say unto every one that walketh
after the imagination of his own heart,
No evil shall come upon you.

Christ the Spirit spoke through the Prophets. If you command what He has not commanded you have blasphemed the Holy Spirit of Christ  Your own imagination is evil

Jesus doesn't pray for the WORLD: that is the Kosmos or adorning world of ancient paganism. Jesus said that God HIDES Himself from the wise: the wise are the sophists meaning speakers, singers and instrument players who use deception to steal your church and soul

Salvation by Trust Only or Prayer Only? 12/5/02 See how the GA, Shelly, Lucado Trithism as A Family of Gods leads naturally to despising the counsel of the human Jesus and how Baptists Baptism denies that Christ came FULLY in the flesh.

In Acts 2:38 we are promised the gift of A holy spirit--ours as a result of baptism.  In 1 Peter 3:21 Peter says that baptism saves because we REQUEST A good conscience which is the same as A holy spirit.

The promise of the New Covenant was that God will write His laws on our hearts. It is only as a result of conversion or baptism that Paul told the Jews that they could read BLACK text on BROWN paper.  Because we are baptized to become a disciple of Christ or Christian, we need for Him to purify OUR mind or spirit so that His Word will dwell there.

Might we not say that the BLOOD OF CHRIST (fully human) does not save us; it is just a symbol of what saves us? Doesn't the will of God forgive our sins?

Human prayers don't have any effect: it is God who has the power?

Or, is it ok to just have a high regard?

Max Lucado: The Apostle Paul's high regard for baptism is demonstrated in the fact that he knows all of his readers have been instructed in its importance. "You wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed" (Romans 6:17).

There is a BEFORE context which we should examine before looking at this passage:

Max later: Christ's death becomes my death. Christ's resurrection becomes my resurrection.

No, there is nothing said about doing a HEAD BAPTISM to accept Christ's death as my death. Paul with all other inspired writers said that

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Rom 6:3

Max ignores the punch line which reads:

Rom. 6:18 Being then made free from sin,
ye became the servants of righteousness.

We suppose that it is important in prophecy and fulfillment BECAUSE nothing other than baptism is said to remit or "wash away our sins."
Ezek. 11:18 And they shall come thither,
and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof
and all the abominations thereof from thence.

Ezek. 11:19 And I will give them one heart,
and I will put a new
spirit within you;
A holy spirit or A good conscience after baptism.
and I will take the stony
heart out of their flesh,
and will give them an heart of flesh:

Ezek. 11:20 That they
may walk in my statutes, and
keep mine ordinances,
        and do them:
[in order that] and they shall be my people,
[in order that] and I will be their God.

Ezek. 11:21 But as for them whose heart
        walketh after the heart of
their detestable things and
        their abominations,
        I will recompense
their way upon their own heads,
        saith the Lord GOD
Rom. 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as
      were baptized into Jesus Christ
      were baptized into his death?
Rom. 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead
by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.

If there is no LAW then you cannot sin:

Rom. 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because w
are not under the law [of Moses],
      but under grace? God forbid.
Rom. 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom
ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
      his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether [ye obey] of sin unto death,
or of obedience unto [to be in fact] righteousness?
Rom. 6:17 But God be thanked,
that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have
        obeyed from the heart
        that form of doctrine
        which was delivered you.  [not
Rom. 6:18 Being then made free from sin,
ye became the servants of righteousness.

Notice that the external, literal terms are matched by the internal Spiritual terms although they often overlap:

Literal: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into (eis) Jesus Christ

Symbolic: were baptized into his death? Romans 6:3

Symbolic: Therefore we are buried with him

Literal: by baptism into death:
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,

[that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father]

even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6: 4

Not in the head: the WAY or MEANS of our being buried with Christ is THROUGH water baptism. How else? It is too late to pay for our own sins. Therefore, water baptism is the grace of God which permits us to REALLY join Jesus. Carnal man cannot accept spiritual things.

Faith- only does not fulfill the TYPE of being buried in the tomb alongside Jesus.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, Rom 6: 5

Next, Paul reverses the parallelism to put the symbolic or parabolic on the outside to make the connection clear:

Symbolic: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,

Literal: even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4
Literal: For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,

Symbolic: we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Romans 6:5

Not faith- only but water baptism commits our body to be crucified with Christ. In fact, faith- only demonstrates human pride which claims: "I don't have to." All believers, past, present and future, were redeemed by the one- time sacrifice of Christ. By grace Jesus preached to those who were dead and continues to preach to we the living. If we ACCEPT the WORD and participate in real BAPTISM then Jesus will have washed us by WATER and the WORD.

knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. Rom 6: 6

For he who has died has been freed from sin. Rom 6: 7

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, Rom 6: 8

knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. Rom 6: 9

For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Rom 6:10

Only those who have obeyed the TYPE of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ who DID NOT model "faith only" are you able then to be dead to future sin:

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom 6:11

Reckon is:

Logizomai (g3049) log-id'-zom-ahee; mid. from 3056; to take an inventory, i.e. estimate (lit. or fig.): - conclude, (ac-) count (of), / despise, esteem, impute, lay, number, reason, reckon, suppose, think (on).

If one has not obeyed the direct commandment of Christ to accept that which He promises to all baptized believers then we CANNOT take an inventory or have the pledge or token that our sins have been forgiven.

Max Lucado: Indeed, baptism is a vow, a sacred vow of the believer to follow Christ. Just as a wedding celebrates the fusion of two hearts, baptism celebrates the union of sinner with Savior. We "became part of Christ when we were baptized" (Romans 6:3)

Are we married to Christ prematurely? Then can you be saved without being united with christ? Is the wedding in effect BY FAITH ONLY. Doesn't the ceremony and the certificate as plege have to be obeyed BEFORE one is legally married? The wedding ceremony CELEBRATES nothing: it is the civil MEANS to having the protection and approval of the civil state.

Therefore, according to the laws of the land a wedding DOES NOT celebrate the fusion of two bodies and lives. Rather, only those who have obeyed THAT FORM of law are considered married and able to enjoy the privileges

Look again at Romans 6:3 and see whether you see a vow like a wedding:

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,

[that just as (meaning type) Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father]

even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6: 4

Romans 6:3 does not speak of a WEDDING CEREMONY. Rather, it speaks of being stuck or empaled on a cross like a butterfly with a pin.

Before you can FUSE with Christ you have to let Him DIVORCE you from the "old man."

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Ro.6:6

Crucified is the Greek:

Sustauroo (g4957) soos-tow-ro'-o; from 4862 and 4717; to impale in company with (lit. or fig.): - crucify with.

Faith only does no cause you to TRUST your own ALREADY-spiritual life by placing your body on the cross with Him trusting that you will be resurrected.

Max Lucado: There is also the case of the disciples of John the Baptist in Acts 19:1-6. They had been baptized by John but were unacquainted with the role of the Holy Spirit. Upon receiving instruction, they sought to be baptized in the name of Jesus.

According to John's Baptism their SINS HAD BEEN REMITTED. The promise of the gift of A holy spirit or clear conscience was available only after Christ had returned to the SPIRIT world which He inhabited as Full Deity. We do not expect them to understand that which they had not heard except that Jesus would do the baptizing of the spirit.

Like the thief on the cross they WERE NOT EXPECTED to know anything about Christian baptism. However, their sins were forgiven by the ACT because to have rejected baptism would have bee to reject the direct commandment of God through Christ.

Baptism REPRESENTS obeying the direct command of Jesus Christ, the practice and teaching of the Apostles and the practice of the church for 1500 years. Only doubting Thomases have problems with obeying the direct command of Jesus Christ. The common people had no trouble understanding that when God commands something and they ARGUE about it they are really telling God that He is a liar.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16

NOT being baptized represents and IS accusing God of being false. Belief without confessing or agreeing with the WORD has no value. Baptism is the public confession of belief:

Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: Jn.12:42

These people were BELIEVERS but they knew that to be baptized with Jesus Christ they would participate in His LITERAL DEATH. Therefore, baptism gets no praise from the world but caused the Jews to celebrate your death as you were put out of their fellowship:

For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. John12:43

Faith- only does not subject one to the praise and disfellowship of the WORLD.

Baptism is the time and place to CONFESS Jesus:

Homologeo (g3670) hol-ol-og-eh'-o; from a comp. of the base of 3674 and 3056; to assent, i.e. covenant, acknowledge: - con- (pro-) fess, confession is made, give thanks, promise.

Logos (g3056) log'-os; from 3004; something said (including the thought); by impl. a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extens. a computation; spec. (with the art. in John) the Divine Expression (i.e. Christ):

Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. John 12:44

And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. John 12:45

I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. John 12:46

And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. John 12:47

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. John 12:48

Rejecting John's baptism was rejecting Christ and His Words which was to reject the commandment of God:

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29

But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against (for themselves) themselves, being not baptized of him. Luke 7:30

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. John 12:49

And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. John 12:50

Faith and water baptism is the only way the Scritures say that God cleanses the church by cleansing its members:

That he might sanctify and cleanse it
........ with the washing of water
........ by the word, Eph 5:26

At Pentecost when Peter was obeying the explicit instruction that Belief PLUS baptism would ask Jesus to save us, Peter said:

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

Then they
........ that gladly received his word
........ were baptized:
........ and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:41

They were not said to have been ADDED when they received or believed the word. Does Baptism contribute additional WORK as Max Lucado claims? Of course not. Baptism is the time and place where we REQUEST A holy spirit or A clear conscience.

Max Lucado: The Apostle Paul's high regard for baptism is demonstrated in the fact that he knows all of his readers have been instructed in its importance. "You wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed" (Romans 6:17).

When the gospel was preach by Philip to the Eunuch and to the Philippian jailer both knew exactly that they should request BAPTISM. How did they know that? It was because they had been taught that the ONLY way God washes and makes one suitable for His Spiritual kingdom is to allow Him to wash us at the time of our physical baptism.  You will notice that Paul says the same thing to all of the people.

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: Ephesians 2:6

He hath raised us up out of the water as the FORM of the PROTOTYPE Gospel. Elsewhere Paul identifies this as BAPTISM. As a result of baptism God ADDS us to His church or kingdom. As well:

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Col 1:12

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: Col 1:13

Skotos (g4655) skot'-os; from the base of 4639; shadiness, i.e. obscurity (lit. or fig.): - darkness.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Col 1:14

Aphesis (g859) af'-es-is; from 863; freedom; (fig.) pardon: - deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission.

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Ac.2:38

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Mt.26:28

GRACE caused Jesus to shed His blood. FAITH in that shed blood does not REMIT SINS

The did not have just a HIGH regard: they knew that water baptism was just as essential as believing in the blood of Jesus because both were expressions of GOD'S WORDS:

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Rom 6:3

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6:4

Faith- only is not LIKE AS the death and resurrection of Christ.

But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin,

yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine (teaching) to which you were delivered. Rom 6:17
having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. Rom 6:18

But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. Rom 6:22

First, they had been taught the gospel which INCLUDES baptism as both the Eunuch and the Jailer proves. Next, they undoubtedly had FAITH or they would not have been baptizes. However, they are NOT SET FREE FROM SIN. This means forgiveness for sins and the gift of a Christ-like Spirit which helps them keep from future sins.

However, only as a DIRECT RESULT of obeying the form of doctrine or teaching of baptism did they receive salvation (Jesus in Mark 16:15-16) or remission of sins (Peter in Acts 2:38)

Jesus was baptized to fulfill al righteousness or FULLY PREACH baptism. His death was the TYPE which we subscribe to ONLY in the waters of baptism. Form is:

Tupos (g5179) too'-pos; from 5180; a die (as struck), i.e. (by impl.) a stamp or scar; by anal. a shape, i.e. a statue, (fig.) style or resemblance; spec. a sampler ("type"), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning): - en- (ex-) ample, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.

who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, "See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain." Heb.8:5

By OBEYING THE FORM which they were taught, they imitated the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. By this obedience in baptism they were SET FREE FROM SINS. Only baptism is said to remit sins.

Max Lucado: Do the bride and groom understand all of the implications of the wedding? No. Do they know every challenge or threat they will face? No. But they know they love each other, and they vow to be faithful to the end.

Well, this bride and groom are in for a big surprise. First, they submit to the FORM of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They take off their clothes, get plunged under the water and come up for air. Some wedding. This is more like an old fashioned wedding: the groom washes and "purifies" the bride.

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Eph 5:24

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Eph 5:25

That he might sanctify and cleanse it
........ with the washing of water
........ by the word, Eph 5:26

Washing is Baptism: Jesus does baptize a whole church;

Loutron (g3067) loo-tron'; from 3068; a bath, i.e. (fig.) baptism: - washing.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,

by the washing of regeneration,
renewing of the Holy Ghost; Tit.3:5

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and

be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ

for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the
(A) Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

The like figure whereunto even

baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh,

but the answer of (request for) a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 1 Pet 3:21

By the word

Rhema (g4487) hray'-mah; from 4482; an utterance (individ., collect. or spec.); by impl. a matter or topic (espec. of narration, command or dispute); with a neg. naught whatever: - / evil, / nothing, saying, word.

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. Jn.6:63

Without Baptism one cannot be part of the Bride of Christ.

Max Lucado: When a willing believer enters the waters of baptism, does he know the implications of the vow? No. Does she know every temptation or challenge? No. But both know the love of God and are responding to him.

Please understand, it is not the act that saves us. But it is the act that symbolizes how we are saved! The invisible work of the Holy Spirit is visibly dramatized in the water.

The believer is NOT getting married: he is requesting that Jesus accept him as a disciple. In commercial baptism an apprentice knew that he wanted to be a tentmaker. He requested that the Master Tentmaker accept him as a disciple. The Master BAPTIZED him, gave him new clothing, a new name and adopted him into his family. So, it is for certain that a person be old enough to want to become a disciple of Christ.  If the disciple does not have to know anything about their baptism then we would call that baptismal regeneration.

But, we have been told that the death, burial and resurrection is the FORM of literal destruction of a human body in the cruelest way possible. We are LITERALLY buried in water to IMITATE that FORM. How, then, can the ACT of God submitting Himself to a HUMAN BODY to redeem mankind SAVE US? Isn't it the FAITH or INTENTION of God on His Throne of Majesty and Glory Who save us? Of course. But, Jesus LAID ASIDE His own glory to take on a body of flesh (which Max seems to deny)

Max Lucado: "That plunge beneath the running waters was like a death; the moment's pause while they swept overhead, was like a burial; the standing erect once more in air and sunlight was a species of resurrection." (Sanday and Headlam, "A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans," in The International Commentary.)

Remove your shoes, bow your head, and bend your knees: this is a holy event. Baptism is not to be taken lightly. The event is a willing plunge of the body and soul into the promise and power of Christ.

The ritual of washing signifies our admission that apart from Christ we are dirty, but in Christ we are pure. The ritual of burial signifies that we are willing to die to sin and self and that we can be made alive again because of him. (Luther referred to baptism as death by drowning.)

The Bible ALWAS says that BAPTISM IS THE SAVING ACT because Jesus assigned it.

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Luther also said:

In these words you must note, in the first place, that here stand God's commandment and institution, lest we doubt that Baptism is divine, not devised nor invented by men. For as truly as I can say, No man has spun the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord's Prayer out of his head, but they are revealed and given by God Himself,

so also I can boast that Baptism is no human trifle, but instituted by God Himself,
moreover, that it is most solemnly and
strictly commanded that

we must be baptized or we cannot be saved,
lest any one regard it as a trifling matter, like putting on a new red coat.

For it is of the greatest importance that we esteem Baptism excellent, glorious, and exalted, for which we contend and fight chiefly,

because the world is now so full of sects clamoring that Baptism is an external thing, and that external things are of no benefit.

Q. What does Baptism give? What good is it?
A. It gives the forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the Devil, gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, just as God's words and promises declare.

Q. What are these words and promises of God?
A. Our Lord Christ spoke one of them in the last chapter of Mark:

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; but whoever does not believe will be damned.''

Q. What is the meaning of such a water Baptism?
A. It means that the old Adam in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and die with all sins and evil lusts, and, in turn, a new person daily come forth and rise from death again. He will live forever before God in righteousness and purity.

Q. Where is this written?
A. St. Paul says to the Romans in chapter six:

We are buried with Christ through Baptism into death, so that, in the same way Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, thus also must we walk in a new life.''

Max Lucado: Baptism effectively seals our salvation, uniting us to him and his body. Christ's death becomes my death. Christ's resurrection becomes my resurrection. There is no indication of an unbaptized believer in the New Testament church. Let us now turn our attention to specific questions that have been raised in regard to baptism.

I think that A holy spirit or a clear conscience or consciousness is our seal that we have been baptized INTO Christ. If we have not received that seal then it is utterly impossible to know the deep mysteries contained in the Word of God.

But wasn't that John's baptism? Yes, but Dr. Jack Lewis wrote:

Prior to Jesus' public ministry, John the Baptist had preached a baptism of repentance for remission of sins (eis aphesin hamartion; Mark 1:4, Luke 3:3). Those people who rejected John's baptism rejected for themselves the counsel of God (Luke 7:29, 30). Its purpose is identical with the purposes suggested for Jesus' death (Matthew 26:28) and for the baptism of Pentecost (Acts 2:38).

"Jesus died (shed His blood) in order that people could have remission of sins (eis aphesin hamartion; Matthew 26:28). Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission (Hebrews 9:22).

No one could argue that Jesus died because sins had already been forgiven.

He purchased the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28). With His blood He purchased a people for His own possession (Titus 2:14). He died for our sins (huper ton hamartion; I Corinthians 15:3).

"Jesus, after the resurrection, informed His disciples that it was written that the Christ should suffer and be raised on the third day and that repentance and the remission of sins (eis aphesis hamartion) be preached in His name unto all the nations (Luke 24:47).

Would anyone want to argue that repentance is to be done because sins have already been forgiven?

"In each of these verses, the phrase is the same as that in Acts 2:38--eis aphesin hamartion. If one case means "because of," then all should mean that.

Acts 2:[38] andres adelphoi; Petros de pros autous Metanoêsate, kai baptisthêtô hekastos humôn en tôi onomati Iêsou Christou eis aphesin tôn hamartiôn humôn, kai lêmpsesthe tên dôrean tou hagiou pneumatos

Metanoêsate baptisthêtô hekastos eis aphesin hamartiôn:

Kataduô duck the whole person

Baptism for remission of sins in Mark 16:16 and Acts 2:38 does not deny God's free grace.

We should not trivialize or "novelize" the Word of a Holy God.

Therefore, the dogma of Max Lucado is that of Believer's Baptism which was adopted by the Baptists after Zwingli to accommodate Calvinism. Believer's baptism is a form of pagan baptism.

See how Rubel Shelly denies Galatians 3 where Paul connects baptism to the active faith of Abraham.
