John Mark HicksWhile making a living from the Churches of Christ John Mark Hicks repudiates just about everything Biblically or historically taught and observed.
Kingdom Come, Embracing the Spiritual Legacy of David Lipscomb and James Harding Hicks and Valentine disassociate themselves from what they called the "ecclesial hermeneutic (‘command, example and inference’)" of Harding and Lipscomb and their participation in the battles with the Disciples of Christ denomination over instrumental music and the missionary societies. They obviously don’t see that such common-sense Biblical interpretation and the battles with those who were losing confidence in restoration, were integral parts of their other-worldliness.
Inevitably, there must be separations between those
who cling to primitivist principles and those that reject them.
Division, though it must be avoided until there is no other recourse,
is sometimes necessary (1 Cor. 11:19).
A restoration of the so-called primitive church of Christ was the principle of all church fathers and founders of denominations. They did not mean according to the silly claim that any church recorded in the Bible was to be the pattern. The well-documented Biblical view is that A Church of Christ is A School (only) of Christ (only) in the Prophets and Apostles. That is clearly demanded by Scripture. If it is the case that the Bible is a preserved history of God's dealing with all nations as the PRIMITIVE or pagan thesis, and Christ defined the qahal, synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ in the wilderness forward, they nothing can happen in "culture" which changes the sole role of A School of Christ.
Thomas Campbell had articulated a standard in 1809 when he wrote, "Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent." That was a common plea for all of church history. That never meant to seek "patterns" for imposing ACTS of worship but as Apostolic Succession meant, each rising presbyter was bound to preserve the text without any additions or subtractions. Restoration meant to the Campbells the clear statement of Christ for the synagogue or church in the wilderness:
Church is A School of Christ
Worship is reading and musing the Word of Christ
The Theologians are just exceedingly angry that the Restoration Movement does not proved them a Role or a Dole since the act of tithing or the ACT of laying by at church would be legalism and according to Paul extortion.
Thomas Campbell Worship : "The author and ultimate object of our holy religion, is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by his Spirit, speaking in Christ and his holy apostles.
"The principle of this holy religion within us, is faith, a correspondent faith; that is, a belief, or inwrought persuasion by, and according to, the word of truth,
in all points corresponding to the revelation which God has made of himself through Jesus Christ by the Spirit. Hence, being rooted and grounded in the truth of this revelation, by faith in the divine testimony,
we contemplate and worship God inwardly;
that is, adore and reverence him in our souls, according to the characters and attributes under which he has revealed himself to us.
Thus we worship the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit, relying upon his teachings in and by the word, to lead us into all the truth which he has testified for our edification and salvation;
and also upon his internal influence to excite, instruct, and comfort us, by the truth; to help our infirmities, and to enable us to think and pray as we ought, both as to the matter and manner of our prayers. See Rom. viii. 26, and Jude 22, 21, with a multitude of other scriptures.
Thus we have the internal religion, the habitual worship of the real believer, the sincere bible-taught christian with its principle; which is the faith above described. See Rom. x. 12-15.
