Jay Guin: The Holy Spirit and Revolutionary Grace
Jay Guin: Many of those who believe the Spirit works only through the Word would say that the Spirit indwells all Christians, but they would mean that the Spirit indwells representatively through the Word.
Jay Guin has set out to rewrite ALL of the views of The Church of Christ which have never changed in two thousand years. This has to do with the Name, Baptism, The Holy Spirit, Instrumental Music and a few other defining characteristics which many would love to trash by feeding off each others false teachings. The problem with being a New Testament Preacher is that you can end up terminally ignorant of the Old Testament as chapter one.
Here is The Table of Contents for Jay Guin.
To begin with Jay Guin will find no Biblical or church history that the Holy Spirit is a third member of a "family of gods." The Holy Spirit is the Spirit OF Christ and not a little person. This is the Spirit or Mind of God. There is only one God Being possible and remain in the Christian Discipline. The separate but equal status in these latter days intends to permit people to claim that they "see beyond the sacred page."
Jonathan Edward's view is the universal view prior to the pseudo-theologians on the lecture and book circuit:
No one before the neo-theologians dared call God a PERSON much less THREE PEOPLE. The Word was PERSONAE and the worst of blasphemy in the church fathers would be to cut up God like a pecan pie. That denies that Christ (God) came fully in the flesh that that means ANTI-Christ.(This I suppose to be the reason why we have never any account of the Holy Ghost's loving either the Father or the Son, or of the Son's or the Father's loving the Holy Ghost, or of the Holy Ghost's loving the saints, tho these things are so often predicated of both the other Persons.)
And this I suppose to be that blessed Trinity that we read of in the Holy Scriptures.
The Father is the Deity subsisting in the prime, un-originated and most absolute manner, or the Deity in its direct existence.
The Son is the Deity generated by God's understanding, or having an idea of Himself and subsisting in that idea.
The Holy Ghost is the Deity subsisting in act, or the Divine essence flowing out and breathed forth in God's Infinite love to and delight in Himself.
Many groups having freedom of expression in America set about to "restore" the New Testament church by simply removing all of the rituals and mandatory creedal statements which grew like moss over the centuries. The American Restoration Movement attracted many groups some of which--many as a product of too much wealth in the north as a result of the civil war -- imposed a radical form of music consistent with the wild frontier and the Great Awakenings.
One SECT developed after the year 1900 and first articulated a view of God in 1938-1942 by H.Leo Boles. Their dogma was that God was a FAMILY of three separated god persons (people) who were individual gods. The oneness of God universally taught by everyone meant that the GROUP of gods were on friendly terms. Nevertheless, some have defined the Father as incapable of organizing the messed up creation and required a Holy Spirit person to organize it. This is called Tritheism which is polytheism.
Jay represents this tritheism or polytheism and presents his book and invited responses. There is no way to respond on a blog so this is an invited review. Jay Guin has as support John Mark Hicks trying to twist Alexander Campbell into a trinitarian.
Pre postmodern history knows of no Spirit as a being in the sense of the modern word PERSON: a person has a being, will and personal consciousness SEPARATE from all other persons. No historic trinitarian sees Father, Son and Spirit as names of individuals and violently opposed the idea of representing the Spirit OF Christ as one of a triad family or community of god people. The word was personae which is not the same as person.

Phil 2:6 who, though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God,
Phil 2:7 but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men.The MIND that was in Christ who WAS God is the word:
Mind is: G5426 phroneo fron-eh'-o From G5424 ; to exercise the mind, that is, entertain or have a sentiment or opinion; by implication to be (mentally) disposed (more or less earnestly in a certain direction); intensively to interest oneself in (with concern or obedience):set the affection on, (be) care (-ful), (be like-, + be of
For US Paul equated the MIND of Christ to the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 2).
An interesting tid bit perhaps part of the SIGN OF JONAH?

Whom was he so afraid of as not plainly to declare,
The Spirit of God in this passage must be the same as the Word.
"God shall come upon you, and the Highest shall overshadow thee?"
Now, by saying "the Spirit of God" (although the Spirit of God is God,) and by not directly naming God,
he wished that portion of the whole Godhead to be understood,
which was about to retire into the designation of "the Son."
For just as, when John says, "The Word was made flesh,"
we understand the Spirit also in the mention of the Word:
so here, too, we acknowledge the Word likewise in the name of the Spirit.
For both the Spirit is the substance of the Word,
and the Word is the operation of the Spirit,
and the Two are One (and the same).
Now John must mean One when he speaks of Him as "having been made flesh,"
and the angel Another when he announces Him as "about to be born,"
if the Spirit is not the Word, and the Word the Spirit. A Spirit has no flesh or blood or bones and cannot be seen. The PERSONA of the Spirit or Mind of God was Jesus Christ. Therefore, the Spirit OF Christ is not a person and does not have "his" own center of consciousness: the Spirit has no words but relays what IT hears as our breath communicates for us. John 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?
he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?Jay Guin: When others say the Holy Spirit indwells a Christian, they mean that the Holy Spirit has a special, personal, effective relationship with the individual Christian that does not exist for non-Christians. The relationship is realized and felt in the Christian’s heart and mind, and thus is an internal, intimate, life-changing relationship—an actual indwelling. We will see whether the Bible uses the term in the same sense. The question is fundamentally one of faith, and the only authority in this matter is the Bible.
Jay Guin also rejects the historic and Church of Christ view of baptism and therefore fails to understand the HOW that the spirit OF Christ whose name is "Jesus Christ the Righteous" transfers His Mind or Spirit through the written word.

In Acts 2:38 those who glady received the Words of Jesus were baptized for the remission (casting out) of sin: that gave the baptized believer A holy spirit or in 1 Peter 3:21 A good conscience. In looking at Jay Guin's proof text from 2 Corinthians 3 we will se that only those who have converted or been baptized now have the ability to read BLACK text on BROWN paper. In the image of the Temple that means that the Veil has been removed and we can go boldly before the Throne of God: There, under the MERCY seat was hidden the Word of God. Having A holy spirit does not given anyone the power to read beyond the sacred pages but it DOES mean that one can read statements that Father, Son and Spirit are PERSONIFIED or visible and audible ONLY in Jesus of Nazareth who left us an example (written says Peter) to UNMASK those who claim power to see visions and hear audible words. One might begin with defining SPIRIT. Spirit never identifies a PERSON but the mind or mental disposition of that person. The Spirit OF Christ is the Mind of Christ (1 Cor 2). That does not teach that a little person lives inside of your carnal body but that the MIND of Christ dwells in your mind. And the Christ-ordained method of transfering His MIND is through His WORDS. That is why He could say
John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.ALL classical trinitarians defined Father, Son and Spirit (not names of people) as:
Father is the one God's Mind.
When the Father speaks a word, that is His SON. He begets His Word from His Mind
The Father breaths out His invisible, inaudible message or spritit meaning wind.
When that breath or spirit is articulated by the Son of God we hear the Word of God. Therefore, the real SON of God is defined as His Word. However, the one God always had His Word and Wisdom and Breath with Him. Word or Son is subbordinate as our words originate in our own mind.
The Word of God was WITH God because he WAS GOD just as my words are me and with me.
Psa. 33:6 By the [1] word of the [2] LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the [3] breath of his mouth.
Psa. 33:7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
Psa. 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
Psa. 33:9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.Jay Guin: A. The Spirit and the Word
Because many within the Churches of Christ believe the Holy Spirit only indwells Christians representatively, that is, through the Word, we must first consider the merit of this view. As we do so, we will often linger over a key passage to gain a deeper insight into the workings of God’s Spirit.
Until the rise of theologians most members of the Church of Christ believed that the Spirit OF God is God's Own Spirit and not a literal person. God's Word is personified and incarnated in Jesus Christ. Proverbs uses the word Wisdom: God's first creation--so to speak--began with His Wisdom say trinitarians. God's Wisdom is the Greek Sophia but we don't believe that God had a litteral daughter before He had a Son.
Before the 20th century everyone believed what the concept of "trinity" always meant which was not a three-people family of gods. You can see the very recent attempt to make the Godhead into a "family" so that we can make God the pattern for church as community or commune. John Mark Hicks documents this view first proposed to the world by H. Leo Boles of David Lipscomb College.
The understanding of the American Restoration Movement and the true Church of Christ understood the universal and historical trinity:
"For God is rational, and Reason was first in Him; and so all things were from Himself.
This Reason is His own Thought (or Consciousness) which the Greeks call logos, by which term we also designate Word or Discourse and therefore it is now usual with our people, owing to the mere simple interpretation of the term,
to say that the Word was in the beginning with God;
although it would be more suitable to regard Reason as the more ancient;because God had not Word from the beginning,
but He had Reason even before the beginning;because also Word itself consists of Reason, which it thus proves to have been the prior existence as being its own substance....
He became also the Son of God, and was begotten when He proceeded forth from Him
Whom was he so afraid of as not plainly to declare,
"God shall come upon you, and the Highest shall overshadow thee?"
Now, by saying "the Spirit of God" (although the Spirit of God is God,) and by not directly naming God,
he wished that portion of the whole Godhead to be understood,
which was about to retire into the designation of "the Son."
The Spirit of God in this passage must be the same as the Word.
Now John must mean One when he speaks of Him as "having been made flesh,"
For just as, when John says, "The Word was made flesh," we understand the Spirit also in the mention of the Word:
so here, too, we acknowledge the Word likewise in the name of the Spirit.
For both the Spirit is the substance of the Word,
and the Word is the operation of the Spirit,
and the Two are One (and the same).
and the angel Another when he announces Him as "about to be born,"
if the Spirit is not the Word, and the Word the Spirit."Again--Some will say, What does the expression Holy Spirit mean? Well, in scripture it stands first for God the Holy Spirit, and secondly for the holy mind or spirit of a believer--for illustration, take Peter's words to Ananias, "Why has Satan tempted you to lie to the Holy Spirit; you have not lied to men, but to God," (the Holy Spirit.) And the Saviour says, How much more will your heavenly Father give a holy spirit (as it should be translated) to those that ask him. Again--Praying in a holy spirit. Again--Paul says he approved himself God's servant "by knowledge, by long sufferings, by kindness, by a holy spirit'" by a mind innocent of the love of gain, or commerce, or sensuality. Walter Scott Early Restoration Movement leader. In these latter days of the postmodern folly that theologians felt the need to relegate Father, Son and the Word to Christianity-Past and claim the power to see visions or hear audible voices to get an evolved Scripture for our evolved eyes and mind.

2. The three "Persons" in GodBut there is another special mark by which he designates himself, for the purpose of giving a more intimate knowledge of his nature. While he proclaims his unity, he distinctly sets it before us as existing in three persons. These we must hold, unless the bare and empty name of Deity merely is to flutter in our brain without any genuine knowledge.
Moreover, lest any one should dream of a threefold God,
or think that the simple essence is divided by the three Persons,
we must here seek a brief and easy definition which may effectually guard us from error. But as some strongly inveigh against the term Person as being merely of human inventions let us first consider how far they have any ground for doing so.
When the Apostle calls the Son of God "the express image of his person," (Heb. 1: 3,) he undoubtedly does assign to the Father some subsistence in which he differs from the Son. For to hold with some interpreters that the term is equivalent to essence, (as if Christ represented the substance of the Father like the impression of a seal upon wax) were not only harsh but absurd.
God did not SPLIT UP but God laid aside His Majesty and Glory as one puts of heavenly garments in order to be clothed as a human:
who, though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God, Ph 2:6LIV
but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men. Ph 2:7When he ascended He sat down by that which He had laid aside to become human:
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Heb 1:3
Hupostasis (g5287) hoop-os'-tas-is; from a comp. of 5259 and 2476; a setting under (support), i.e. (fig.) concr. essence, or abstr. assurance (obj. or subj.): - confidence, confident, person, substance.
The idea of hupostasis means that Jesus is the SUPPORT or underpining. Jesus is that IMAGE of God which was seen and heard by approved apostles. Without validating Jesus as His Living Word and resurrecting Him as a visible person, the words of the apostles would have no more validity than preachers who get visions and hear audible voices.
The PARABLE is NOT that we should think that God IS A HUMAN which is the meaning of modern PERSON.
Heb. 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake
in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
[throught the spirit OF Christ 1 Petere 1:11; Rev 19:10]
Please note that the Spirit OF Christ did not define Christian doctrine THROUGH the kings or priests added as a CURSE to those who refused to hear the Spirit in the WordsHeb. 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,
whom he hath appointed heir of all things,
by whom also he made the worlds;
When God spoke, His Word was His Son. His Word was not VISUALIZED during the creation.Heb. 1:3 Who being
the brightness of his glory, and
the express image of his person, [foundation or underpinning]
and upholding all things by the word of his power,
when he had by himself purged our sins,
sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
The underpinning UPHOLDS and is the foundation:Heb. 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels,
We are not to suppose that the GIVER of the Light is a PEOPLE.
as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
Heb. 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ,
if we hold the beginning of our confidence [not a people] stedfast unto the end;
Heb. 3:15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice,
harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
Faith is NOT a person like a human:
Heb. 11:1 Now faith is
the substance [not a people] of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen.Literalists are forced to translate this:
Heb. 11:1 Now faith is
the PERSON of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen. This word is translated as the assurance or underpining of all things. If it speaks of a PERSON then it makes God either the FOUNDATION or maybe INFERIOR:
Hupo (g5259) hoop-o'; a prim. prep.; under, i.e. (with the gen.) of place (beneath), or with verbs (the agency or means, through); (with the acc.) of place (whither [underneath] or where [below]) or time (when [at]): - among, by, from, in, of, under, with. In comp. it retains the same gen. applications, espec. of inferior position or condition, and spec. covertly or moderately.
For the essence of God being simple and undivided, and contained in himself entire, in full perfection, without partition or diminution, it is improper, nay, ridiculous, to call it his express image, (charaktes.)
But because the Father, though distinguished by his own peculiar properties, has expressed himself wholly in the Son,
he is said with perfect reason to have rendered his person (hypostasis) manifest in him. And this aptly accords with what is immediately added, viz., that he is "the brightness of his glory."
The fair inference from the Apostle's words is, that there is a proper subsistence (hypostasis) of the Father, which shines refulgent in the Son. From this, again it is easy to infer that there is a subsistence (hypostasis) of the Son which distinguishes him from the Father.
Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou Blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? John 10:36
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. John 10:37
But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me,
and I in him. John 10:38

I in HIm Speaks History knows that the word TRIAS was adopted from paganism AFTER Arius began his teachings. Here is some Calvin to prove that these are RHETORICAL DEVICES to try to explain the false teaching. It is a fact that Calvin had given little thought to the nature of the SON and SPIRIT until after Servetus gave a much more scholarly definition. Calvin was never known as an ecclesiastical person but a civil leader and could not tolerate any challenges.
"The same holds in the case of the Holy Spirit; for we will immediately prove both that he is God, and that he has a separate subsistence from the Father. This, moreover, is not a distinction of essence, which it were impious to multiply. If credit, then, is given to the Apostle's testimony, it follows that there are three persons (hypostases) in God.
"That word meaning something as a foundation or assurance: Servetus argued that only Christ was a hypostases because only Christ was made known to the world.
The Latins having used the word Persona to express the same thing as the Greek "hupostatis", it betrays excessive fastidiousness and even perverseness to quarrel with the term. The most literal translation would be subsistence. Many have used substance in the same sense. Nor, indeed, was the use of the term Person confined to the Latin Church.
Substance is NEVER a PERSON but something on which faith subsists: a foundation.
"For the Greek Church in like manner, perhaps, for the purpose of testifying their consent, have taught that there are three "prosopa" (aspects) in God. All these, however, whether Greeks or Latins, though differing as to the word, are perfectly agreed in substance.
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matt 28:18
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name (singular) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mt.28:19"Father, Son and Spirit are not three names but three aspects of God which are never separated.
I have no objections to adopt the definition of Tertullian, provided it is properly understood,
"that there is in God a certain arrangement or economy, which makes no change on the unity of essence." - Tertull. Lib. contra Praxeam.
TertullianThe object of our worship is the One God,
He who by His commanding word,
His arranging wisdom,
His mighty power, brought forth from nothing this entire mass of our world, with all its array of elements, bodies, spirits, for the glory of His majesty; whence also the Greeks have bestowed on it the name of Kosmos. The eye cannot see Him, though He is (spiritually) visible.
Power One God Word Wisdom Jay Guin: There have been a number of publications by the non-indwelling school of thought to the effect that the Holy Spirit and the Word must be the same since they do the same things. Lists have been compiled by which it is shown that the Bible attributes the same roles to the Word and the Spirit. Thus, it is argued, they are indistinguishable.
Sorry about that but Jay will find that this is exactly what all classical "trinitarians" believed and taught about the ONE God and His own WORD incarnated in Jesus of Nazareth. For instance John Calvin on Continuing Revelation repudiates the ONLY reason that people believe that they have ONE THIRD OF GOD living inside of their carnal bodies.

1.The fanatics wrongly appeal to the Holy Spirit
Those who, rejecting Scripture, imagine that they have some peculiar way of penetrating to God, are to be deemed not so much under the influence of error as madness. For certain giddy men have lately appeared, who, while they make a great display of the superiority of the Spirit,
reject all reading of the Scriptures themselves, and deride the simplicity of those who only delight in what they call the dead and deadly letter.
But I wish they would tell me what spirit it is whose inspiration raises them to such a sublime height that they dare despise the doctrine of Scripture as mean and childish.
If they answer that it is the Spirit of Christ, their confidence is exceedingly ridiculous;
since they will, I presume, admit that the apostles and other believers in the primitive Church were not illuminated by any other Spirit.
None of these thereby learned to despise the word of God, but every one was imbued with greater reverence for it, as their writings most clearly testify.
And, indeed, it had been so foretold by the mouth of Isaiah. For when he says,
"My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever,"
he does not tie down the ancient Church to external doctrine, as he were a mere teacher of elements; he rather shows that,
under the reign of Christ, the true and full felicity of the new Church will consist in their being ruled not less by the Word than by the Spirit of God.
Hence we infer that these miscreants are guilty of fearful sacrilege in tearing asunder what the prophet joins in indissoluble union.
Add to this, that Paul, though carried up even to the third heaven, ceased not to profit by the doctrine of the law and the prophets, while, in like manner, he exhorts Timothy, a teacher of singular excellence, to give attention to reading, (1 Tim. 4: 13.)
This is Paul's unique word for worship in Spirit and in Truth: give attention or give heed. This is the same word in Hebrew used by David when he "worshiped" and sang songs upon his bed and meditated in his heart.
And the eulogium which he pronounces on Scripture well deserves to be remembered, viz., that
"it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect," (2 Tim. 3: 16.)
What an infatuation of the devil, therefore, to fancy that Scripture, which conducts the sons of God to the final goal, is of transient and temporary use?
Again, I should like those people to tell me whether they have imbibed any other Spirit than that which Christ promised to his disciples. Though their madness is extreme, it will scarcely carry them the length of making this their boast.
But what kind of Spirit did our Saviour promise to send? One who should not speak of himself, (John 16: 13,)
but suggest and instil the truths which he himself had delivered through the word. Hence the office of the Spirit promised to us, is not to form new and unheard-of revelations, or to coin a new form of doctrine,
by which we may be led away from the received doctrine of the gospel,
but to seal on our minds the very doctrine which the gospel recommends.2. The Holy Spirit is recognized in his agreement with Scripture
Hence it is easy to understand that we must give diligent heed both to the reading and hearing of Scripture, if we would obtain any benefit from the Spirit of God, (just as Peter praises those who attentively study the doctrine of the prophets, (2 Pet. 1: 19,) though it might have been thought to be superseded after the gospel light arose,) and, on the contrary,
that any spirit which passes by the wisdom of God's Word, and suggests any other doctrine, is deservedly suspected of vanity and falsehood.
Since Satan transforms himself into an angel of light [knowledge], what authority can the Spirit have with us if he be not ascertained by an infallible mark? And assuredly he is pointed out to us by the Lord with sufficient clearness; but these miserable men err as if bent on their own destruction,
while they seek the Spirit from themselves rather than from Him.
Jay Guin: Let’s test this argument by reading a few passages. First, note this quote from John’s Gospel:
(John 14:16-17)
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
In these verses, Jesus tells his apostles that after his resurrection God will send the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will certainly not be given only to the apostles or the First Century Christians—the Spirit is to be given “forever.” Moreover, the coming Spirit will neither be seen nor known by the world.Summary: Jesus said "I" will come to you. Father and Son will dwell IN people who keep the commandments of Christ. At the same time the obedient beliver dwells IN the Father and Son. Therefore the word IN does not mean "inside of" but in connection with each as a mutually living in connection. The same John said that the "fuller" Comforter would have the name "Jesus Christ of Nazareth." When the Father sends the Spirit or the Son sends the Spirit the spirit will "bear the NAME of Jesus Christ." If one assumes that Jesus lied and could NOT put His Spirit or His Mind into His words then how could anyone believe that the Invisible, Inaudible Deity could fully indwell a body of flesh. If God who IS holy or Wholly Spirit in nature thought that mankind could HEAR His Words without an intercessor or mediator then Jesus would have died in vain. If Jesus as the incarnate WORD did not speak all that we need for life and Godlness then he utterly failed. If any human can HEAR the Spirit of God other than through the Word then he must have an EXTRA sense that the rest of us did not Get.
Peter defined the written "memory" as a way to MARK false teachers: if anyone rejects the facel to face revelation of Jesus Christ, validated by supernatural signs and gave Apostles to fill out the record of the Prophets then Peter wants everyone to know that in John Calvin's words THEY ARE FANATICS and not worthy of listening to.
Is. 59:10 We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men. This is fulfilled according to Paul:
Is. 59:11 We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.
Is. 59:12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;
Is. 59:13 In transgressing and lying against the LORD,
and departing away from our God,
speaking oppression and revolt,
conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
Is. 59:14 And judgment is turned away backward,
and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.
Is. 59:15 Yea, truth faileth;
and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey:
and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
Is. 59:16 And he saw that there was no man,
and wondered that there was no intercessor:
therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
Is. 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head;
and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing,
and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
Is. 59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies;
to the islands he will repay recompence.
Is. 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun.
When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
Is. 59:20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.

There is no Classical Trinitarian who does not teach this:If ye had known me,
ye should have known my Father also:
and from henceforth ye know him,
and have seen him. John 14:7
That is because there is only ONE Divine Being: Jesus was filled with FULL DEITY.
Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Col 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Here is why some may STILL preach a pagan Triad or Family of Gods which gave rise to the Family of God (churches) because God "got lonely and NEEDED community."

He has just told you that if you have seen the SON then you have seen the FATHER because "I and the Father are ONE." No, they are not on friendly terms: there is only ONE God.
Philip SETS UP Jesus' REPUDIATION of a "Father" as a person separated from the "son" or "mother."
Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. John 14:8
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you,
and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?
he that hath seen ME hath seen the Father;
and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? John 14:9
Father Thought Jesus Son Word God With Us Spirit Breath In these views Father THINKS, Son SPEAKS and Spirit (breath) breathes forth the word. Never forget that Jesus spoke to the BRIGHT LIGHTS in parables to PREVENT them from getting control of the SPIRIT and retailing it as Isaiah 48 makes clear.
Here is the confirmation by Jesus as SON who speaks what the FATHER thinks:
Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?
the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself:
but the Father that dwelleth IN me, he doeth the works. John 14:10
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works sake. John 14:11
How very evil is it to use human imagination to concoct an IDOL of God as three MEN able to stand face to face or side by side to consult with one another in a COMMUNITY of Gods!
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12
Works means ERGS or the expenditure of suffering and sweat and blood: No, you do not hear the voice of God because NO MAN HEARETH God and that is why GOD came to us with vocal cords.
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do,
that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14:13
If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. John 14:14
That is why Peter understood baptism in the NAME of "father, son and spirit" meant baptize in the NAME of Jesus Christ (Jehovah-saves)
Note the conditional IF:
If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15This is why people get lost in the context and claim that Jesus is ONE comforter and the Holy Spirit Person is ANOTHER Comforter. But, we say in Isaiah 59 that God sent His ARM or SEED as the ONE Intercessor. Why? Because it was not then nor now possible for a human to hear the inaudible and see the unseeable.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another [fuller] Comforter,
THAT he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16

Jesus as man was not immortal: his life was limited but as SPIRIT He can abide with us always. IF we REPUDIATE Jesus the Christ of God by claiming that the SPIRIT tells us to lie about the Word of Christ we MARK that person as one of the generation of Vipers or a Crooked generation MARKED by their musical styles along with the dogs and wolves.
Jay Guin: Jesus is our Counselor, and the Spirit is another Counselor. The Greek word translated Counselor is the same word used for a defense attorney. It is literally “one who stands beside” to give comfort or counsel.
No: there is only ONE Intercessor or Counselor at a time: otherwise "they" might get confused. Another does not mean ONE MORE BESIDES ME.
What is the NAME of this "fuller" Comforter?
1Jn.2:1 MY little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate [comforter] with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Is HE another little person to fit in your carnal body? NO. Spirit is PERSONIFIED and CODIFIED:
Even the Spirit OF truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:
but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:17I am not aware of a book in the "brotherhood" on the Holy Spirit which can quote this verse.
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. John 14:19
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. John 14:20Jay Guin: Some translations call the Spirit the “Comforter.” And the word refers to a person, not a book.
The Spiritual Being as Comforter is "Jesus Christ the Righteous." He claimed that His Words were His Spirit or His Mind: He never speaks of another PERSON. Because the Spirit is equated to the Word or that which is written in the NEVER musical passages, when we read the Words we hear the Voice of the invisible Spirit Christ all over the world at the same time.
However, Paul defined the only COLLECTIVE task of the ekklesia or synagogue as a school of the Bible. It has NO OTHER assignment which might call for a BETTER set of instructions because WE have evolved.
In Romans 14 Paul outlaws doubtful disputations which might arise out of the human imagination to enable the synagogue in Romans 15 which SPECIFICIALLY SAYS that Scripture has been left to be our COMFORTER!
Rom. 15:1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
Rom. 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. [education]
Rom. 15:3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
Rom. 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime
were written for our learning,
that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Rom. 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Rom. 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom. 15:7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.Jay Guin: And Jesus himself speaks of sending “him,” not “it.” Moreover, the Spirit that Jesus is to send forever can be seen and known by Christians but not non-Christians. How can this be a description of the Bible? Many lost people own and diligently study the Bible. Jesus says that only Christians possess and experience the indwelling of the Spirit.
Paul Tillich wrote:
"The Spirit is sometimes personified in the Bible, as in John 16:7-8, and this has led many to believe that it is a person. They do so because they do not take into account an idiom of the original Greek language. In Greek, inanimate objects which in English would be couched in the neuter gender, are given a masculine or feminine gender, if those objects are identified with any particular individual. ' For example, a chair is described as "it" in English, because it is neuter, being neither masculine nor feminine. But in Greek that chair can be identified with its owner. If it belongs to me, the chair is described as he; if it belongs to my wife, as she. Click Here.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:13
........... He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. John 16:14"For this reason, the Holy Spirit has frequently been personified in Scripture, identifying it with God, and so it is personified as he.
"However, if the Holy Spirit were actually a person it should be rendered as he in every place where the word is referred to; but it is not. It is sometimes rendered in the neuter. In Romans 8:16, Paul writes: "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit." The neuter, itself is used, and this is in accord with the Greek text, as any Greek scholar will acknowledge.
"To personify inanimate objects is normal in Scripture. Wisdom is represented as a woman (Proverbs 9:1), mammon is described as a friend (Luke 16:9), sin is personified as a slave-owner (Romans 6:16), the Holy Spirit as a comforter (John 14:26), expressing the spirit of Truth. So Micah declared: "I am full of power by the spirit of the Lord" (Micah 3:8). The prophets were moved by the spirit to record the Scriptures (Nehemiah 9:20; 2 Peter 1:21), and God used the same means to speak to Israel through His Son (Hebrews 1: 1). For the rest of the quote Click Here.
"Personification.-- This is a figure of speech by which inanimate beings are spoken of as animated, or endowed with life and volition; animals are endowed with feelings akin to those of men.
"This is well suited to an imaginary condition of mind, and therefore frequently employed in Hebrew Scriptures. Indeed, it is now a staple in the market of communication, and we use it so commonly ourselves that whe have almost ceasted to speak of it as a figure of speech." (Prof. D. R. Dungan, Hermeneutics, p. 324, Gospel Light Publishing)"Holy" is an adjective and not a name. Holy means Wholly. A Spirit is not a "person" in any sense because a spirit does not have flesh and blood and bones. The use of GHOST is unfortunate because a spirit is what is left over after a PERSON is dead.
Spirit may be personified but a Spirit in both Hebrew, Greek and the universal use in the literature means the "mental disposition of a human" or it speaks of God who is WHOLLY Spirit.
The NAME of The Holy Spirit or the Spirit OF God or the Spirit OF Christ is 'Jesus Christ the righteous.' The use of the word person
A Spirit cannot have a soul because soul defines the "living" as in a "living body" and the Spirit is not made of body, soul and spirit.
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and
were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, Acts 16:6After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. Acts 16:7That is because no historical scholarship knows of a SPIRIT which is not the Spirit OF Jesus Christ.
When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. Acts 16:7NIV, NAS, RSV, LIV
But even unto this day, when Moses is read [preached in the synagogue], the vail is upon their heart. 2 Cor 3:15Nevertheless, when it shall turn [convert=be baptized] to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 2 Cor 3:16Peter confirmed that the Day Star will not arise in your hearts unless you "take heed" to that which has been written by him as an eye witness.
Now the Lord IS that Spirit: and where the Spirit OF the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor 3:17
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory OF the Lord,
are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
even as by the Spirit OF the Lord. 2 Cor 3:18
Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently,
who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 1 Peter 1: 10
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit OF Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Peter 1:2 Pet 1:18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
2 Pet 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant,
and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God:
for the testimony OF Jesus IS the spirit OF prophecy. Rev 19:10
Whatever we say about the Holy Spirit is it all also true if we honor Him with His name: Jesus Christ the righteous. The TASK of the ekklesia or synagogue even in the wilderness has the ONLY resource for the Christian System: you do not have to be a Christian or a disciple of Christ: you can be a ceremonial legalists and VIOLATE the fact that Jesus died to remove the laded burden and laded burdens all of which connected directly to the musical/ theatrical arts. The task of the ekklesia is to read and discuss the Word and it has no NEED for further revelation. It is ONLY those who refuse to conduct what the Campbells called A SCHOOL OF CHRIST who need something "beyond the sacred page. There can be NO change in culture which demands an UPDATE by those who cannot read the text.
B. JOHN 3
Jay Guin: John’s Gospel is an especially important source of information about the Holy Spirit. The coming of the Spirit is a major theme of this book. For example, when Jesus is approached by Nicodemus, Jesus tells him about the nature of the new birth: (John 3:5-8) Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again: The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” Jesus tells us that the Spirit gives birth to Spirit. The New International Version translators capitalized “Spirit” only in the first reference, but in the First Century, Greek was written entirely in capital letters. There was no difference in the capitalization in John’s own writing. Jesus’ parallel is that the Spirit gives birth to Spirit just as flesh gives birth to flesh. Those born of the flesh have the nature of the flesh. Those born of the Spirit have the nature of the Spirit. When you are born again, you are born of the Spirit and you become a Spiritual being. The Spirit affects your very nature, just as being born of the flesh defined your nature as a fleshly being.
John was already a MAN and already born of the FLESH: Amniotic fluid is not water. A grown man needs to be born AGAIN. The expression born of water and spirit is identified as water baptism by most scholars. After that baptism in water God removes sin from OUR spirit and we therefore have A holy spirit. The same Peter said that BAPTISM SAVES US because it is our calling on the name of the Lord to REQUEST a good conscience. Therefore, A good conscience is OURS and A holy spirit is ours. With our sanctified human spirit the Word of God can indwell and Jesus said my WORDS are SPIRIT.
Eph. 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;John 3 begins:
Eph. 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph. 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing;
but that it should be holy and without blemish.
John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:THE LATIN WORDS.
John 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him,
Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God:
for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?
can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born
Nicodemus understood the word to mean AGAIN as in AGAIN.

[2] and shall return to Yahweh your God, and shall obey his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul;
[3] that then Yahweh your God will turn your captivity, and have compassion on you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples, where Yahweh your God has scattered you.
Judith 5: 17 "As long as they did not sin against their God they prospered, for the God who hates iniquity is with them. 18 But when they departed from the way he had prescribed for them, they were utterly defeated in many battles and were led away captive to a foreign land. The temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their towns were occupied by their enemies. 19 But now they have returned to their God, and have come back from the places where they were scattered, and have occupied Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled in the hill country, because it was uninhabited.
Jn 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him,
Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a MAN be born AGAIN
he cannot see the kingdom of God.
It is not possible to miss what Jesus said:
A MAN must be born AGAIN to SEE the kingdom.
The parallelism is
A MAN must be [future] born of H20 and Spirit.

Neither the New International Version of the Bible nor the King James Version always follow this capitalization, and so the quoted verses may follow different capitalization conventions.
Older text used unical script or upper case. However, the Calvinists of the KJV did commentary when they made their OWN decision about whether the text was speaking of Spirit as the Mind of God or spirit which is always the "mental disposition of a Being." The Calvinists did not think of the Spirit OF Christ as another member of the Godhead. One of the facts of scholarship is that Paul never uses Spirit in the sense of another Divine Being separated from Father or Son none of which are NAMES.
LETTER is THE LAW OF MOSES: SPIRIT is THE FAITH or THE GOSPEL. God MINISTERS Spirit through PREACHING the gospel. Peter wrote his MEMORIES which had been attested by God in the flesh. He literally DARED anyone to speak anything out of their own MIND which is rarely spiritual meaning "rational." This would MARK the mind-speakers as FALSE TEACHERS as the False Prophets always SEED PICKED the Spirit of Christ.
God, through Zechariah, shows how people so damage their spirits that they no longer belong to God. Therefore, as He did the nation of Israel, He allowed them to walk in their own ways and worship like the nations.
But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Zechariah 7:11
They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that
the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry. Zechariah 7:12Therefore it is come to pass, that

Jay Guin: (2 Cor. 3:3) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
If the Spirit operates only through the Word, how can Paul say that the Corinthians are a letter written with the Spirit and “not with ink”?
(2 Cor. 3:4-6) Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
The Law of Moses was IMPOSED because The Book of The Covenant of Grace was proven not to be written on their heart of FLESH or their own spirit or Mind.
Ezek. 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:Peter promised that after God washes away sin from OUR human spiri it will be REgenerated and therefore "born again." Paul confirms that there is no "singing" or "sermonizing" in the synagogue or ekklesia:THE LAW: But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: 2 Cor. 3:7
THE FAITH, THE GOSPEL, THE SPIRIT: How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? 2 Cor. 3:8
For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. 2 Cor. 3:9
For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth. 2 Cor. 3:10
For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious. 2 Cor. 3:11
Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: 2 Cor. 3:12
And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: 2 Cor. 3:13But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth

To the Galatians, Paul shows that receiving the Spirit is not by external works (singing, dancing, chanting, pleading for God to save you), but by hearing and believing the message of and about Christ:O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
......... Jesus Christ hath been
......... evidently set forth, crucified among you? Galatians 3:1This only would I learn of you,
......... Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law,
......... or (Received ye the Spirit) by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:2Paul MINISTERED the Spirit through preaching: they received the Spirit by listening. Therefore, Paul was not ministering a THIRD PERSON. Luther in Law and Gospel wrote:
"But Paul says that the Spirit, through his preaching, has wrought in the hearts of his Corinthians, to the end that Christ lives and is mighty in them. After such statement he bursts into praise of the ministerial office, comparing the message, or preaching, of Moses with that of himself and the apostles. He says:
"Such confidence have we through Christ to Godward: not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God.
8. These words are blows and thrusts for the false apostles [PAGE 227] and preachers. Paul is mortal enemy to the blockheads who make great boast,
pretending to what they do not possess and to what they cannot do;
who boast of having the Spirit in great measure; who are ready to counsel and aid the whole world;who pride themselves on the ability to invent something new. It is to be a surpassingly precious and heavenly thing they are to spin out of their heads, as the dreams of pope and monks have been in time past.
"We do not so," says Paul. "We rely not upon ourselves or our wisdom and ability. We preach not what we have ourselves invented. But this is our boast and trust in Christ before God,
that we have made of you a divine epistle; have written upon your hearts, not our thoughts, but the Word of God.
We are not, however, glorifying our own power, but the works and the power of him who has called and equipped us for such an office; from whom proceeds all you have heard and believed.
9. It is a glory which every preacher may claim, to be able to say with full confidence of heart:
........... "This trust have I toward God in Christ, that what I teach and preach is truly the Word of God."There is a role for PROFESSORS and Rhetoricians and Sophists but we quoted Luther above to say that it WAS NOT of ANY value in the spiritual realm: that is why Jesus repudiated the Doctors of the Law who might go and make a living in Canon Law:
In short, let him who would be wise, who would boast of great skill, talents and power, confine himself to things other than spiritual;
Now the Lord IS that Spirit: and where the Spirit OF the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor. 3:17
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor. 3:18
Jay Guin: Paul now goes much further and tells the Corinthians that there is a very big difference between God’s Word acting alone and God’s Spirit—the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. The new covenant, the gospel, is “of the Spirit,” and it is not “of the letter.”
For a Word-only Christian, this cannot make sense. Don’t even try to argue that Paul is talking about the special gifts of the Spirit discussed in 1 Corinthians 12-14. Paul says that all the Corinthians are written with the Spirit on tablets of the human heart. Certainly not all Corinthians had special gifts. After all, many Corinthians were surely added to the church long after Paul had left.1.The fanatics wrongly appeal to the Holy Spirit
If they answer that it is the Spirit of Christ, their confidence is exceedingly ridiculous;
since they will, I presume, admit that the apostles and other believers in the primitive Church were not illuminated by any other Spirit.
Hence the office of the Spirit promised to us, is not to form new and unheard-of revelations, or to coin a new form of doctrine, by which we may be led away from the received doctrine of the gospel, but to seal on our minds the very doctrine which the gospel recommends
