Edward Fudge No Everlasting Punishment

8.29.14

Because I am not God and have no defining power:
I may not know how long is "for ever and ever."
I may not know WHAT is the blueprint and Driving Purpose of hell like the scholars.
I can be DOGMATICALLY CERTAIN that musical instruments used when God calls us to Rest, Read and Rehearse His Word wiithout passing judgment on it is the IDENTIFYING MARK of those who will be case ALIVE into the lake of fire.

10.15.11 click below for added notes proving that the END-TIME appeal to the Disciples and the Millerite so-called "apocalyptic" views is the "patternism" for the rise of music, sabbath worship, a millenniel view that the kingdom is "now but not yet" and the dogma of the annihilation of  souls.  That is the driver of the "Missional Church" where there is no such word as missional.

Sorry! I tend to add "filler" as I continue my restudy of this issue: you can skip to the next "Edward Fudge" statement and read as much as you can tolerate.

Matt Dabbs asks Edward Fudge: "With all the discussion of hell on this blog over the last few months I thought I would bounce a few questions off someone who has been studying the subject a lot longer than myself. So I asked Edward Fudge if he would field some questions. He is best known for his book "The Fire that Consumes" and has a movie coming out soon that chronicles his study of what has become a giant topic in Christianity. The movie is called "Hell and Mr. Fudge." Thanks to Mr. Fudge for his willingness to sit down and answer these questions so thoroughly."

Revised 10.12.11 Edward Fudge seems to discount the statements made by Jesus in or around Jerusalem because he was just threatening people with annihilation on the garbage pit.  Therefore, this review looks primarily at the NT passages which Fudge uses to say that Jesus was just speaking of the garbage dump outside of Jerusalem.

Criminals who were cast into the garbage dump where they rotted or burned on a bed of maggots:
        They were not tormented,
        Their physical bodies were quickly consumed by fire, maggots and birds.
        They did not get thirsty,
        They did not gnash their teeth
        and there was no "lake" of fire and no brimstone

Their SPIRITS did not die on the garbage heap: the garbage dump is a TYPE of the destiny of Lost Spirits who HAD deceived the whole world once with speakers, singers and instrument players John calls SORCERERS.

This was Christ's Prophetic Type: In the ANTI-type for the final sentence John says that they are CAST ALIVE INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.

This is where God promises to cast the King-Queen of Babylon: the body and soul or physical life is consumed but their spirits returned to God Who gave it for His own disposition.

Most people understood that this was a TYPE prophesied by Christ in the prophets.  They understood that this was a threat of eternal punishment.  Otherwise, it would make no sense to tell the Jews what they already knew: criminals were DEAD and then cast on the garbage pile at gehenna.

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Remember that it was because of Musical Idolatry at Mount Sinai and later the firing of God in favor of a king that God abandoned them to the worship of the starry host at an existing Jebusiite High place.  The Levites (singers, players) made the identifying noise when the goats were being burned.

THE BAPTISM OF SPIRIT AND FIRE

The Prophecy is that the Viper Race will be SIFTED by the wind (spirit not a people) and then heaped up and burned as CHAFF.

Xen. Sym. 2.1 When the tables had been removed and the guests had poured a libation and sung a hymn, there entered a man from Syracuse, to give them an evening's merriment. He had with him a fine flute-girl, a dancing-girl—one of those skilled in acrobatic tricks,—and a very handsome boy, who was expert at playing the cither and at dancing; the Syracusan made money by exhibiting their performances as a spectacle.
2.2] They now played for the assemblage, the flute-girl on the flute, the boy on the cither; and it was agreed that both furnished capital amusement. Thereupon Socrates remarked: “On my word, Callias, you are giving us a perfect dinner; for not only have you set before us a feast that is above criticism, but you are also offering us very delightful sights and sounds.”

Which is opposite of the one-piece "pattern" for a Church or School of the Word.

For those who MISSED IT the CENI of Jesus is to make DISCIPLES and teach what HE COMMANDED TO BE TAUGHT: That is the one piece pattern for an assembly of Christ. Music means to make the lambs dumb before the slaughter.

Christ in the prophets defined the future role of those under the unfluence of the kings of Tyre and Babylon whon He equated to Lucifer the singing and harp playing prostitute who was right there to seduce Eve and then Adam.  He is treated--by the Spirit OF Christ--as alive and being taunted by the lesser lights.

We have put the NT passages first to prove that just because Jesus used the types (Christ established in the prophets) in Jerusalem they apparently can have no antitypical application in an everlasting burning. There is no scholarly way to explain away the Prophets and the prophecies made more perfect and left for our memory. See 2 Peter 1

2 Pet 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

If God waited for Edward Fudge, the SDA etal to "further expound" on hell then Peter was mistaken when He identified that which he and others left for our "memory" as not subject to further expounding and AIDS imposed by presumptious neo-Levites.

Christ in Spirit spoke through the Prophets and Jesus made these prophecies more perfect. Therefore, heaping up verses not related to the final destiny in the prophets and by Jesus is blasphemy.
Edward Fudge begins with a false premise which is passing judgment on Christ Who used the words consistent with the prophets--by the Spirit of Christ--and the Jewish view at the time.

Edward Fudge: Third, the traditional notion that God will intentionally and actively keep millions of people alive forever just to torment them endlessly is inconsistent with the teaching of Scripture, contradictory to the character of Jesus, and, even worse, is a horrible slander against the heavenly Father

"Traditional" is one of those put-down words telling you that you have no Biblical evidence. God is God and He will decide what to do. However, reading the story line in a body of text as opposed to just listing a host of references (no text) is the best way history knows of getting you toasted.

Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord;
        and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23: 29
Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord,
        that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Jeremiah 23: 30
Behold, I am against the prophets,
        saith the Lord, that use their tongues,
        and say, He saith. Jeremiah 23: 31
Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord,
        and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness;
        yet I sent them not, nor commanded them:
        therefore they shall not profit this people at all,
        saith the Lord. Jeremiah 23: 32

However, Fudge and all of the Doctors of the law (Scribes and Pharisee: writers, rhetoricians, singers and instrument players Ezek 33) will never read BLACK text on BROWN paper [2 Cor 3]  because they reject "turning to Christ" which means to be converted which is accomplished only when we are baptized into Christ and quit using human imagination which God says is only evil continually.

God is not the PARENT of those OF the World for whom Jesus does not pray.
God is not the parent of those who "speak on their own" Jesus called SONS of the Devil.
God HIDES from the wise or sophists: speakers for sale, singers, instrument players, actors or dancers.
Jubal is the FATHER of those who handle (without authority) musical instruments always Purpose Driven to fleece someone.

Edward Fudge: Think how two good parents would feel to learn that their babysitter has told their little children that if they disobey, their parents have said they will cut the children's fingers off with scissors, stab them in the neck with a butcher knife, and poke them into the microwave oven until they pop. That is nothing compared to the slander of saying that  God will torment people alive in fire forever and ever without end—if indeed God has said nothing of the sort.

Remember? Jesus said "doctors of the law take away the key to knowledge."

First, God is the Father of the obedient is NOT the father of the Devil or his teachers and disciples.  Jesus called the Pharisees the "sons of the Devil": the MARK of being a son of the Devil is that "they speak on their own." This is such a dangerous slippery slope that the elders are told to "teach that which has been taught." The pattern was to PREACH the Word by READING the Word.

John 6:39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me,

4 The alternative with Ruso was either ruin from extortion, or misery from listening to his writings. If his wretched creditors could not pay him, then they were condemned to hear him read his works. Perhaps some might prefer considering historias used in the sense of "tedious narration," and refer it to the long schedule of the items in his account. Audit. Edward Fudge uses the same words against those who refuse to use or endorse the use of musicalinstruments where--as disciples understand--the command is to teach what Christ commanded to be taught.  Trying to release people's fear from hell is directly connected to Christ speaking through Amos.  Those willing to impose instruments planning to sow discord say that you have NOTHING to fear: they then twist Amost to accomplish that purpose.  However,

THE COVENANT WITH DEATH IS DEFINED BY AMOS: Steven said that God ABANDONED them to worship the starry hosts because of musical idolatry.

"The marzeah was a pagan ritual that took the form of a social and religious association... Some scholars regard the funerary marzeah as a feast for--and with--deceased ancestors (or Rephaim, a proper name in the Bible for the inhabitants of Sheol)." Isaiah 28:17 Judgment also will I lay to the line,
        and righteousness to the plummet:
        and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies,
        and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
Isaiah 28:18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled,
        and your agreement with hell shall not stand;
        when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,
        then ye shall be trodden down by it.

THE WORLD IS THE FIELD OF THE DEVIL: NEVER MAKE A COVENANT WITH THE WORLD
Matthew 13:38 The field is the world;
        the good seed are the children of the kingdom;
        but the tares [darnel] are the children of the wicked one;
Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil;
        the harvest is the end of the world;
        and the reapers are the angels

Tares are marked by NOT teaching that which has been taught: they use all of the performing or hypocritc arts knowing that they can cause spiritual blindness:

"But, say they, it is written, 'All who were before the Lord's advent are thieves and robbers.'... The devil is called 'thief and robber;' having mixed false prophets with the prophets, as tares with the wheat. 'All, then, that came before the Lord, were thieves and robbers;' not absolutely all men, but all the false prophets, and all who were not properly sent by Him. For the false prophets possessed the prophetic name dishonestly, being prophets, but prophets of the liar.

"And the Shepherd, the angel of repentance, says to Hermes, of the false prophet: 'For he speaks some truths. For the devil fills him with his own spirit, If perchance he may be able to cast down any one from what is right. (Clement, Stromata, p. 319)

Jesus now as The Holy Spirit had to let Paul SEE and HEAR him after His resurrection and glorification to be qualified to be guided into all truth.  If one claims to be guided--finally--into truth about hell they MUST have seen and heard the risen Jesus.
SCELEDRUS
'Tis a wonder that you are in the habit of feeding on darnel, with wheat at so low a price.

Feeding on darnel: He means to say that his sight must have failed him, and, by way of accounting for it, that he must have lived on bread made of darnel. This grain was supposed not only to cause the person eating to appear as it intoxicated, but very seriously to affect the eyesight. Ovid says in the Fasti, B. 1., l. 691, "Let the fields, also, be clear of darnel that weakens the eyes."

Charles Chauncy wrote against the antics of George Whitefieled who, like many popular "preachers" was trained in the THEATER.

"Visions now became common, and trances also, the subjects of which were in their own conceit transported from earth to heaven, where they saw and heard most glorious things; conversed with Christ and holy angels; had opened to them the Book of Life and were permitted to read the names of persons there; and the like.

The Definition of Shamanism

"My short definition of shaman is an individual member of a tribe or community who provides healing, therapy, advice, teaching or spiritual meaning through mediation in altered states of consciousness. The functions of the shaman occupy several dimensions, although the specific activities vary from culture to culture. For example, although altered states of consciousness are af feature in all, the altered state, or ASC, may be achieved by various methods including music, chanting, drums, meditation, solitude, movement, dancing and psychoactive plants. (See Table 1)

In 2 Corinthians 3 Paul said THE LORD IS THAT SPIRIT and that the Jews could not READ or HEAR the Word of the Old Testament until they  were converted (baptized into) Christ.

FUDGE SAYS THAT BIBLE READERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THE DEVIL PLANTS

The Devil PLANTED these tares in the world or kosmos.  The early literature repeated by Christ in the prophets is that God cast "Lucifer" out of heaven and he/she/it showed up in the garden of Eden as the "singing and harp-playing prostitute."  He totally seduced Eve in a sexual way (says Paul) and "planted" the tares in the wrold. They will be the great misleaders of the theological world.  Because they are not a literal tare (hallucinogen) grain but people, being burned up like chaff is a parable to fool the clergy (Matt 23).  Their burning will last forever says all of Scripture. God is smart enough to say that they will be annihilated!

God removes them from HIS Children.  They have made a covenant with death.
Matthew 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; [not consumed]
        so shall it be in the end of this world.

However, after that, the Devil can have his disciples: they make the choice but not the consequence.

Matthew 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels,
        and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend,
        and them which do iniquity;

Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire:
         there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
        Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Jesus does not list a terminal date for the wailing and gnashing of teeth OR the righteous shining forth. You don't have to believe it but it is dangerous to deny what Jesus said and most recorded history understands.
But, many deny that this is true: the tares as literal seed would not gnash their teeth in the TYPICAL hell at the garbage dump. Jesus intends for us to honor His teaching that the gnashing of teath is in contrast to the righteous shining forth. It would make little sense if the tares just gnash long enough to experience Fudge's capital punishment.
Those who love to offend God and His children will have to repay: the avenging angels simply put them where they belong by virtue of not being the SEED of God

The devil is the ruler of the Cosmos for whom Jesus would not pray: if the devil had nothing to give then the story would be silly.

Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain,
        shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Luke 4:6 And the devil said unto him,
        All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them:
        for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

Luke 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear;
        then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts,
        lest they should believe and be saved
Music in the sacrificial system was to "make the lambs dumb before the slaugher." It also means to "silence the voice of the victim."  This is how the devil forces you to NOT listen to the songs and sermons of Christ:

Conrad L'Heureux demonstrated that the marzeah, or symposium (feast, gathering, banquet, assembly) of El that is found in the Rephaim Texts of Ugarit "must be a reflex in the divine world of the symposium celebrated by the members of the earthly marzeah of El...each guild apparently had a divine patron."42 The heavenly marzeah had participants called rp'm, which we also find in the earthly marzeah, e.g., "May Krt be greatly exalted among the rp'm of the earth...the rp'm constitute an aristocracy of which the Canaanite kings were a part."43 Moses, and the prophets following him were proclaimed as "Speakers for Yahweh," showing the people that "they are sent from the divine king, the suzerain of treaties, to reprove and to pronounce judgment upon Israel..."44

Note 42: Conrad L'Heureux, "The Ugaritic and Biblical Rephaim," Harvard Theological Review, 67(1974): 270-271.

Note 43. Conrad L'Heureux, Rephaim, 271. Cf. 272, footnote 25, the authority of El is ordinarily exercised through the younger generation of gods whom we could call the executive deities. It is also possible to understand the term rp'm as "the assembly of the gods." The entire premise of Jacobsen's article "Primitive Democracy," is that the groups and assemblies on earth reflected what the gods had done in heaven.

"In pagan traditions, musical instruments are invented by gods or demi-gods, such as titans. In the Bible, credit is assigned to antediluvian patriarchs, for example, the descendants of Cain in Genesis 4:21. There is no other biblical tradition about the invention of musical instruments." (Freedman, David Noel, Bible Review, Summer 1985, p. 51). (Proof Here).

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
        He was a murderer from the beginning,
        and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
        When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own:
        for he is a liar, and the father of it.

That is why people who use their human imagination or believe that God is guiding them to deny what all scholarship believed based on the Bible are not guided by a holy spirit.
James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.
        Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members,
        that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature;
        and it is set on fire of hell.

Don't blame God when hell itself is the source of the tongue which denies what has been taught. Here is the absolute MARK
John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not:
        for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,
        hath one that judgeth him:
the word that I have spoken,
        the same shall judge him in the last day.

All historic scholarship used to translated the Bible into english were MISTAKEN and because an idea comes into Fudge's head--maybe from Homer Hailey--the words "providence" and "God's help" intends to negate all of the translations.

Christ in the prophets and Jesus use the same gehenna or burn pile as the TYPE of the final and eternal (for ever and ever, everlasting, fires shall not be quenched) of the final destiny for those who let the Devil put his words into their mouth:
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him,
        If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him,
        and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
If the message of Jesus has not been preserved by all of those diligent scribes then you deny His power.

God did not command burning innocent children or animals: when the Israelites rejected Him as King Christ in Isaiah 30 looks back and declares that they will meet the same fate. That is because God turned them over to worship the starry host under the dominion of Baal or other name for the Devil

Christ in the prophets and Jesus who made the prophecies more perfect speaks of the king of Tyre and of Babylon as types of Lucifer: He teaches that they will be aware and mocked by the others who refused to let the Words of Christ just rest where He left them. Peter left the written memory to identify false teachers.

The Devil prepares
a place for all of his disciples by teaching against Christ: he enlists the theologians or doctors of the law who "take away the key to knowledge."  He also uses singers and instrument players where music meant "to make the lambs dumb before the slaughter."  Pattern: the Israelite sect rose up in musical idolatry at Mount Sinai;  God turned them over to worship the starry host.  He assigned the Levites to be the Musical Burning Team.

While the Devil tempts, those who go to hell are those who PREPARE THEMSELVES to go there. They may be related to the fallen angels (preachers) or wandering stars (decievers) which continued in the Cainites--derived from a musical note or mark

Second: Jesus went away to prepare a place for His Disciples -- baptized believers prepare themselves by attending ekklesia / synagogue which is a School (only) of the Word of Christ (only). Their spirits have already been translated into the heavenly kingdom.

Matt 25:29 For unto every one that hath shall be given,
............ and he shall have abundance:
............ but from him that hath not shall be taken away
............ even that which he hath.

Matt 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant
............ into outer darkness:
............ there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory,
        and all the holy angels with him,
        then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

Matthew 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations:
        and he shall separate them one from another,
        as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
Matthew 25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand,
        but the goats on the left.

The burning of the goats is the PATTERNISM for saying that God commanded instrumental music. Christ in the prophets says that God had not commanded sacrifices or burnt offerings.

The Levites jumped at the chance to execute the 3000 musical idolaters at Mount Sinai also "stood in ranks" to make noise when the GOATS were being burned by the COMMAND OF DAVID.  It is logical that they also use the Levites as their pattern to "make the lambs dumb before the slaughter" so they cannot hear the Word preached by being read and discussed.

Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand,
        Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you
        from the foundation of the world:

Matt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand,
............ Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, [for ever and ever]
............ prepared for the devil and his angels:
Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment:
        but the righteous into life eternal.

Why would people feel guided by "a" spirit and insult Jesus: why wasn't he smart enough to just say that the evil people will go away and be EXECUTED?

Why would all recorded history use the word EVERLASTING if it really means "just a short time?"

In order to try to gain credibility by repeting the claim that Tertullian and others got their notions of an eternal hell from Plato, you have to say that the clear statements of Jesus which no translator has changed were simply NOT credible.

Since hell has nothing to do with the Disciples of Christ who use "one mind and one mouth to teach that which is written for our learning" meaning Scriptures, hell doesn't easily become a hobby to ride.

I KNOW OF NO BIBLE LITERATE PERSON IN HISTORY WHO SAYS THAT GOD PREPARED HELL BECAUSE HE WANTED TO BURN EVEN INNOCENT CHILDREN.

Our review does not pretend to understand either heaven or hell: Since a disciple teaches that which has been written without using human imagination--always evil says God--it is important to look beyond proof texts to define words and test them against parallel passages. All of church history warns against those who look at a text out of context and view that as 'INSPIRED' even beyond the sacred pages. Only God is subject to that treatment.

It is very important to treat the whole context and define words as understood at the time.  Whether we approve or not, the message is clear: the evil do not simply die like dogs but are treated in a way consistent with the way they treated others.

Matt Dabbs 1.    What sparked your initial study of the annihilation perspective on hell?

Edward Fudge: It would be more exciting if I had a dramatic story to relate about that, but I really do not. My detailed study of the doctrine of final punishment came about in a  quiet way that I now am convinced was thoroughly providential.

The Disciples accepted the views of William Miller that Jesus would return in 1844: that is the so called "apocalyptic" view promoted by some Churches of Christ and the Seventh Day Adventists.

The Claim: Pronnoea foreknowledge: divine guidance or care, God conceived as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny
Edward Fudge: "That was 1982, and god’s hand had been evident in this book from the beginning. Written by an unknown author with no prestigious institutional connection, and privately published by a small and obscure Verdict Publications, the original edition of The Fire That Consumes nevertheless carried a commendatory foreword by the highly-respected new Testament commentator, F. F. Bruce. The second, British, edition included a second foreword by John w. wenham of oxford. a new foreword by richard Bauckham crowns this third edition. The Fires That Consume, Introduction

F. F. Bruce,  described himself as "agnostic" on this issue.

DISCIPLES OF CHRIST AND MILLERITE OLD AND NEW CONNECTIONS

A Restructure Movement intending to connect the Churches of Christ to the Christian Churches about that time appeal to the Disciples of Christ and their "apocalyptic" view as the PATTERN which should be restored. John Mark Hicks of Lipscomb University has written extensively on this period.  This has led to a "broader role for women and instrumental music." Fittingly, this has been infiltrated by restoring a Sabbath Day's Worship. The "millenniel" view and Tritheism is endorsed.

William J. Nottingham of Global Ministries agrees with H. Leo Boles that the discord among what became the Disciples/Christian churches was based on this bonding with the Millerites.
William J. Nottingham Global Ministries.
Quoted in Unity by H. Leo Boles

"My point here is that the first missionary society was the product of a long and intense process which generated considerable soul-searching. There were shared biblical principles and at the same time fundamental differences in theological opinion. Disagreement grew
      concerning congregational ecclesiology,
      commonality in mission with other Christians,
      and also perhaps communion of the Holy Spirit.

This tension would eventuate in separate bodies and institutions of the 20th and 21st centuries.  [Disciples and NACC] A full appreciation is probably hidden from us in the distance from ante-bellum times.
      But the nature of the Bible's authority,

      the relatively new idea of the autonomy of the local congregation,
      and the centrality of millennialist eschatology for these men and women,

They went to Jerusalem, not because of Acts 1:8 "beginning with Jerusalem" as a popular Disciples legend has it, but because it was taken for granted by Alexander Campbell and his followers that the Jews were to be converted before the return of Christ.
That was a false assumption: the Millenial Harbinger's major thrust was not to SUPPORT Millerism but to defeat it.  Campbell denies that Jesus will return to Canaan.  Because the Church of Christ did not believe in William E. Miller [Ellen G. White].  You will notice that it was the Disciples who were tilted by Miller.

What the "scholars" out of the once-Christian colleges could not grasp that they were wrong.  Alexander was speaking of the "protestant theory."
In the Millennial Harbinger of 1841,
       we read in what is called The Protestant Theory:
      They say: "The Millennium, so far as the triumphs of Christianity is concerned, will be a state of greatly enlarged and continuous prosperity, in which the Lord will be exalted and his divine spirit enjoyed in an unprecedented measure. All the conditions of society will be vastly improved; wars shall cease, and peace and good will among men will generally abound. The Jews will be converted, and the fullness of the Gentiles will be brought into the kingdom of the Messiah."

The founding of the American Christian Missionary Society cannot be separated from the millennialist eschatology of the period

See Alexander Campbell on the Second Coming to prove that you never believe "the doctors of the Law."  This takes careful reading to grasp that Campbell REPUDIATES any speculation.

See Wikipedia to see that it was not God doing the leading:

"Seventh-day Adventists believe that the wicked
        will be punished in the lake of fire,
        before ultimately being destroyed.

Their reading of biblical texts that are used in support of the traditional doctrine of hell is that these texts can be harmonized with this particular annihilationist understanding of hell. The Seventh-day Adventist view is that these biblical texts refer to the destructive forces that are employed and the results of this punishment as being eternal, and not that the wicked specifically experience conscious torment throughout eternity."

BUT JOHN SAID that the "rhetoricians, singers and instrument players" were sorcerers who HAD deceived the whole world and then:

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars,
        shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone:
        which is the second death.

This death is NOT annihilation but being CAST ALIVE into the Lake of Fire.  Arnobius who does NOT teach annihilation suggests that these marked spirits existed before

Robert Brinsmead, an Australian and former Seventh-day Adventist best known for his Present Truth Magazine, originally sponsored Edward Fudge to write The Fire that Consumes.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church's official beliefs support annihilation.

However Wikipedia uses Arnobius to PROVE Annihilation but--consistently--does not quote the real Arnobius
"Your interests are in jeopardy,-the salvation, I mean, of your souls; and unless you give yourselves to seek to know the Supreme God, a cruel death awaits you
        when freed from the bonds of body,
        not bringing sudden annihilation,
        but destroying by the bitterness of its grievous and long-protracted punishment.
Destroying one's destiny does NOT mean annihilation as can be read from the proof-text

This proves that when ""doctors of the law" go beyond the sacred pages God sends them strong delusions so they believe their own lie. Someone "cherry picked" and slandered Arnobius.

Some REAL Arnobius: Note that letting a spirit live forever is not the meaning of immortality.

"None but the Almighty God can preserve souls ; nor is there any one besides who can give them length of days, and grant to them also a spirit which shall never die,  except He who alone is immortal and everlasting, and restricted by no limit of time. For since all the gods, whether those who are real, or those who are merely said to be from hearsay and conjecture, are immortal and everlasting by His good-will and free gift, how can it be that others are able to give that which they themselves have, while they have it as the gift of another, bestowed by a greater power? Let Etruria sacrifice what victims it may, let the wise deny themselves all the pleasures of life,

let the Magi soften and soothe all lesser powers,
    yet, unless souls have received from the Lord of all things that which reason demands,
        and does so by
His command,
    it
will hereafter deeply repent having made itself a laughing-stock,
    when it begins to feel the approach
of death.

One might believe that the world of the "doctors of the law" would welcome and facilitate any one suggesting that all of the Bible about hell is just evil nonsense.  However, book publishers tend to support book publishers: Bruce welcomed another view.

Arnobius: May it not happen, may it not come to pass, although you craftily conceal it, that the one should take the other's place, deluding, mocking, deceiving, and presenting the appearance of the deity invoked? If the magi, who are so much akin to soothsayers, relate that, in their incantations,

The Levites were soothsayers with instrumental accompaniment.
The rhetoricians, singers and instrument players were sorcerers in Revelation 1823
      pretend gods steal in frequently instead of those invoked; that some of these, moreover, are spirits of grosser substance, who pretend that they are gods, and delude the ignorant by their lies and deceit." (Arnobius Against the Heathen, Ante-Nicene, VI, p. 479).

"If the Sibyl, when she was uttering and pouring forth her prophecies and oracular responses, was filled, as you say, with Apollo's power, had been cut down and slain by impious robbers, would Appolo be said to have been slain in her? If Bacis, If Helenus, Marcius, and other soothsayers, had been in like manner robbed of life and light when raving as inspired, would any one say that those who, speaking by their mouths, declared to inquireres what should be done?" (Arnobious, Ante-Nicene, VI, p. 431)

Apollo is the Abaddon or Apollyon in Revelation: the Locusts are Apollo's Muses whom John calls sorcerers. Unleasing the singers, clappers, actors and instrument players is God's way to separate people: those with the mark will be cast alive into the lake of fire. The "beast" is not an animal but John fools the foolish: the beasts are the marks of "a new style of music or drama." Jesus promised that He would provide away of escape.

The Bible gives a universal MARK: elders are to teach that which is written. The synagogue in Paul's words is to "use that which is written with one mind and one mouth for out learning." (Rom 15).
If you say that God said something
And God did NOT say it
Christ in Jeremiah 23 defines that as blasphemy of the Spirit of Christ.
Telling people that there is no hell prepared by the Devil and all whom he can seduce is dangerous.  Jesus

We simply do not know what went on in another time and place or another dimension which is now fought out on the earth which is the domain of the Devil.

Luke 11:51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias,
        which perished between the altar and the temple:
        verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge:
        ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
Luke 11:52NET Woe to you experts [doctors] in religious law! You have taken awayt he key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in.”
Luke 11:53 And as he said these things unto them,
        the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently,
        and to provoke him to speak of many things:
Luke 11:54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth,
        that they might accuse him.
Peter said that "private interpretation" or "further expounding" is dangerous because the "memory" the eye- and ear-witnesses left denies the power of Jesus of Nazareth Whom God made to be both Lord and Christ.

Edward Fudge: In August 1976, Christianity Today published an article of mine called "Putting Hell in Its Place." It was not particularly controversial, but it was somewhat provocative to think.  I began with a brief overview of  the Valley of the Sons of Hinnom in the OT and in the literature from between the Testaments. I observed that gehenna (the Greek word for "hell" as place of final punishment)

appears only twelve times in the NT, all but one of those in the Gospels,
and always with Jesus speaking to Jews living in and around Jerusalem.

Scholars of the time would understand that Jesus was using the garbage dump as a type of the physical destiny of criminals. Jesus made the prophetic types more certain.

The concept of an everlasting, never ending, forever and ever place of retribution does not depend on the word gehenna which was a Physical Type of the reality the wicked would suffer. They certainly understood that the burning, maggot-oozing corpse of the criminals did not gnash with their teeth or cry out for a drop of water.

The prophetic types speak of the wicked dead going into hell and being greeted by all of the other great ones of the earth.The garbage  pile in Jerusalem was the visual parable of the reality well understood by readers of the prophets.

Edersheim: Eternal Punishment at the time of the New Testament:
(See vol. ii. Book V. ch. vi.)

Because Jesus affirmed the understanding of the rabbi at the time by not refuting it, Edersheim warns those who are ready to dogmatically pronounce judgment.

"Thus far it has been the sole aim of the present writer to set before the reader, so far as he can, all the elements to be taken into consideration. He has pronounced no definite conclusion, and he neither wishes nor purposes to do so. This only he will repeat, that to his mind the Words of our Lord, as recorded in the Gospels, convey this impression,
        that there is an eternity of punishement; and further,
        that this was the accepted belief of the Jewish schools in the time of Christ.

But of these things does he feel fully assured: that we may absolutely trust in the loving-kindness of our God; that the word of Christ is for all and of infinite value, and that its outcome must correspond to its character;

        and lastly, for practical purposes, that in regard to those who have departed (whether or not we know of grace in them) our views and our hopes should be the widest (consistent with Scripture teaching), and that as regards ourselves, personally and individually, our views as to the need of absolute and immediate faith in Christ as the Saviour, of holiness of life, and of service of the Lord Jesus, should be the closest and most rigidly fixed.

It's true that Jesus taught in and around Jerusalem:

Jesus was speaking to the Jews: Fact. He was speaking to people in Jerusalem: Fact. God hid the truth from the clergy from the foundation of the world in parables: they had no right to know.  The Jews had a history of burning infants to Molech and hid the cries with loud instrumental noise.  The REALITY of which Molech was a type was that God would drive THEM into "hell" to the sound of wind, string and percussion instruments.

The Literal garbage pits where the king of Babylon was still spiritually aware were TYPES. There is nothing in the types which can be fulfilled in annihilation.

See Isaiah 30 lists the SIGNS of the Devil driving the enemies of God into his own domain.

If hell is symbolic it is used to show that those who take the liberty of tampering with God's Word have no qualifications for a Spiritual existence which first tried by the test of obedience: The command is to "teach the Word as it has been taught" without private interpretation or further expounding.

Edward Fudge: In the rest of the article, I examined a dozen statements by NT writers contrasting the final state of the redeemed and of the lost. Interestingly,  those comparisons usually are worded in simple terms that clearly suggest either life or death.

PASSAGES TO DISCOUNT HELL BECAUSE JESUS SAID THEM IN OR AROUND JERUSALEM

Remember that the Spirit OF Christ guided the prophets who make eternal punishment very clear. Jesus of Nazareth fulfilled the prophecies and Peter said that this is how we build up or educate the church.

The Garbage pit for burning animals and criminals was a VISUAL IMAGE Jesus used to explain the destiny of false teachers under the guidance of the Devil.

THE
gehenna PASSAGES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.

JESUS SAID: MATTHEW 5
Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Everyone dies: Jesus was speaking of something beyond being unconscious on the garbage heap. They did and do call Jesus a fool and were not cast into the garbage pit near Jerusalem.  Jesus was speaking of something profound.
Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee:
        for it is profitable for thee that
        one of thy members should perish,
        and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Matthew 5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee:
        for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish,
                and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

You could pluck out both eyes and cut off all of your limbs and it would not prevent you from dying and being ANNIHILATED physically.
  JESUS SAID: MATTHEW 10
Matthew 10:27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light:
        and what ye hear in the ear,
        that preach ye upon the housetops. [CENI]
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body,
        but are not able to kill the soul:
        but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
God gave us all body, soul and spirit: It seems that the soul is alive until someone desides to destroy it: yet destroy does not mean annihilation.

Hor. S. 2.6.59 Among things of this nature the day is wasted by me, mortified as I am, not without such wishes as these: 0 rural retirement, when shall I behold thee? and when shall it be in my power to pass through the pleasing oblivion of a life full of solicitude, one while with the books of the ancients, another while in sleep and leisure?

JESUS SAID: MATTHEW 18
Matthew 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you,
        Except ye be converted, [baptized]
        and become as little children [regenerated A holy spirit]\
        ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child,
        the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me,
        it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck,
        and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

JESUS BROADENS THE TYPES OF ETERNAL PUNISHMENT.

Matthew 18:7 Woe unto the world because of offences!
        for it must needs be that offences come;
        but woe to that man by whom the offence [trap] cometh!
Matthew 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee,
        cut them off, and cast them from thee:
        it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed,
        rather than having two hands or two feet
        to be cast into everlasting fire.
No Greek word and no translation defines everlasting as just long enouch to execute or annihilate the wicked AFTER Chrisit has resurrected them and consigned them back to oblivion. That would make the whole cast of Bible writers sound like fools for not saying what God has revealed to Fudge.

You will note that the whole body of literature agrees that
Everlasting Fire is the same as Hell.
They did not cast the Scribes or Pharisees (hypocrites) into the garbage pit. Therefore, Jesus was speaking of the antitype.

Matthew 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones;

JESUS SAID: MATTHEW 23
Matthew 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

        or ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men:
        for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Scribes and Pharisees are defined by Christ in Ezekiel 33 as rhetoricians, singers and instrument players.

Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
        for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer:
        therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
        for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made,
        ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
If "hell" is just the garbage dump, how could one become a twofold child of hell?

JESUS SAID: MISSED: MATTHEW 25 WHICH HAS THE SAME MESSAGE

Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory,
        and all the holy angels with him,
        then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

Matthew 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations:
        and he shall separate them one from another,
        as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

Matthew 25:33 And he shall
        set the sheep on his right hand,
        but the goats [capellas] on the left.
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand,
        Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire,
        prepared for the devil and his angels:

Jesus as Holy Spirit returned to God the Father to prepare a place for the faithful

John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I
         go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you,
         I will come again, and receive you unto myself;
         that where I am, there ye may be also.

Part of that preparation is preaching the gospel which is all of the good news made possible by Jesus disabling the laded burdens and burden laders.

We know that hell was prepared for the Devil and his angels but all of those who are deceived will also be cast into the Lake of Fire.

Hell is the place prepared by the Devil and his false prophets (pseudo preachers, singers, instrument players).  Perhaps without knowing their spiritual history they WISH to be with Satan.

The people in Amos who replaced the Word with wine, women and Music had a Covenant with death.  By the use of music they believed they could appease the dead to prevent them from hurting the living. This is true in other prophets by Christ:

Isaiah 28:14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD,
        ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
Isaiah 28:15 Because ye have said,
        We have made a covenant with death,
        and with hell are we at agreement;

How could the Jews make a covenant with a garbage pit? Clearly, people understood that the Devil and his angels personified as Death and Hell was a warning against anyone who would tamper with the Word of God.

Most of the "burning" events are marked by rhetoricians, singers and musicians making the voice of the victim silent.  When you hear the trumpet it is time to take cover from those working overtime to try to prove that the Bible and word definitions do not mean what everyone before believed.

Those exorcising hell say that life is "eternal" but the punishment is just long enough to perform capital punishment.

JESUS SAID: MARK 9
The Fulfilled anti-type or a "pattern to be imitated."

Mark 9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me,
        it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck,
        and he were cast into the sea.
Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed,
        than having two hands to go into hell [Gehenna,]
        into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Mark 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off:
        it is better for thee to enter halt into life,
        than having two feet to be cast into hell,
        into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Doesn't Jesus' statement--EVEN around Jerusalem--that the "fire that never shall be quenched" refute the view that the ETERNAL fires last just long to execute the aroused wicked? How would you say "never be quenched" if you wanted to say eternal fires?  If you redefine words and make "never" mean "pretty soon" how can one believe that one is guided by A holy spirit.
Mark 9:46 Where their worm dieth not,
        and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 9:47 And if thine eye offend thee,
        pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye,
        than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
If you let the Words of Jesus just rest on the page you will understand that the Kingdom of God is opposite to hell: the kingdom of the world, the Kosmos for whom Jesus refused to pray.
Mark 9:48 Where their worm dieth not,
        and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 9:49 For every one shall be salted with fire,
        and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
WHAT CAUSES ELDERS TO BE CAST INTO HELL?

It is pretty hard to think that failing to give literal food to the poor would be singled out as worthy of being punished eternally.
God ordained elders who are APT to teach feed the flock over which they presume to shepherd.
That presumption connected with failure to feed with the Word of Christ is seen by God as beyond redemption.

Isaiah 56:9 All ye beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all ye beasts in the forest.
Isaiah 56:10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs,
        they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.
Isaiah 56:11 Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough,
        and they are shepherds that cannot understand:
        they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.

Ezekiel 34:9 Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;
Ezekiel 34:10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds;
        and I will require my flock at their hand,
        and cause them to cease from feeding the flock;
        neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more;
        for I will deliver my flock from their mouth,
        that they may not be meat for them.

 Musical instruments in the prophets are the identifying mark of elders who refuse to give food and water to the flock. The result is:

Amos 8:10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD,
        that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread,
        nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
Amos 8:12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east,
        they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Isaiah 5:10 Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath,

Isaiah 5:11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning,
        that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Isaiah 5:12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine,

        but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

The command, example and inference is that they PREACHED the Word by READING the Word and discussing it.  The pattern was commanded by Paul to Timothy.

Aeternus , I. without beginning or end, eternalperpetual, what exists as long as time endures, and keeps even pace with it; aeternus, the eternal, that which is raised above all time, and can be measured only by œonsaiōnes, indefinite periods); for Tempus est pars quaedam aeternitatis,Cic. Thus the sublime thought, without beginning and end, is more vividly suggested by aeternus than by sempiternus, since the former has more direct reference to the long duration of the eternal, which has neither beginning nor end. Sempiternus is rather a mathematical, aeternus a metaphysical, designation of eternity, Doed. Syn. I. p. (sempiternus denotes what is (

There is simply no way that you can make Aion translated as everlasting and Aeternus and a parallel statement mean  "just long enough to do capital punishment of the wicked and make the same words mean FOREVER for the saved.  If you CHANGE the interpretation to fit your views then you cannot be faithful to the text and universal history before the latter day prophets.

JESUS SAID: LUKE 12
Luke 12:1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together
        an innumerable multitude of people,
        insomuch that they trode one upon another,

Luke 12:4 And I say unto you my friends,
        Be not afraid of them that kill the body,
        and after that have no more that they can do.
Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear:
        Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell;
        yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

This would have no meaning if the extra power was just to cast you on the garbage dump.
JESUS SAID: LUKE 16
Luke 16:24 And he cried and said (suppllicium), Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus,
        that he may dip [bapsē ] the tip of his finger in water,
        and cool my tongue; [abluo quench, cool passion, spirit]
        for I am tormented in this flame.

Baptism and crucifixion means to cool the passions of the flesh. To recrucify Christ means to arouse the passion and pride while we claim to be students gathered to hear the Word of Christ (only).
The tormented man fits the pattern of Matthew 25:46 supplicium punished and asking for a tiny drop of water. Calling Christ in the prophets, the direct commands of Jesus and the disciples liars may be the subconscious motive for trying to neutralize hell.

Tertullian etal: Do you suppose that this end of the blessed poor man and the miserable rich man is only imaginary? Then why the name of Lazarus in this narrative, if the circumstance is not in (the category of) a real occurrence? But even if it is to be regarded as imaginary, it will still be a testimony to truth and reality. For unless the soul possessed corporeality, the image of a soul could not possibly contain a finger of a bodily substance;
        nor would the Scripture feign a statement about the limbs of a body, if these had no existence.

JAMES 3
James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.
        Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members,
        that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature;
        and it is set on fire of hell.
THIS ENDS SOME OF THE NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGES WHERE JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT HELL: MUST BE DISCOUNTED SAYS EDWARD FUDGE BECAUSE HE WAS REALLY SPEAKING OF THE GARBAGE PIE.

These Topheths or burning piles including living infants existed in many places such as Tyre and Carthage. Tophet is named after the tabret or tambourine.

If you cut off a body peart such as an arm it PERISHES or is annihilated. It is cast into the "grave."
That can prevent being eternally lost and have your whole body cast into hell.

Pĕr-ĕo   I. To pass away, come to nothing; to vanish, disappear, be lost:
II. To pass away, to be destroyed, to perish
1. To perish, lose one's life, die (class.): non intellego, quamobrem, si vivere honeste non possunt, perire turpiter velint;

Both Hell and Gehenna have a broad range of use including that long period before Moses wrote.

Hell
Gehenna

Peter defined the prophets speaking by the Spirit of Christ and the prophecies made more perfect by Jesus of Nazareth as that upon which the church is edified or educated.  If you discount all that Jesus taught in and around Jerusalem you have missed it all.  Christ in the prophets called the Civil-Military-Clergy complex IN Jerusalem as recorded by the "lying pen of the Scribes" as robbers and parasites: John in Revelation calls it Sodom. Sodom is one of those parables which describes the world which contains all of the evil people.

Therefore, we have to look to Jerusalem as a key center of burning infants and God's animals as the PROTOTYPE.  The musical idolatry at Mount Sinai was seen as a prayer to God that they be abandoned by Him and turned over to worship the starry host. It is never God's predestinated will.

What better image of a "spiritual" hell than the place where they burned infants to Molech and later turned into a garbage dump: the fires were always burning and the maggots were always eating the left-overs. Good people were never placed on the garbage heap: only those who requested it by ignoring a Holy God.

Most bodies never experience fire to terminate their God-given Spirit.

Since our eternal destiny would mean nothing to us if our dead bodies were dumped on the burning fires, Jesus was speaking of those who are still conscious after their bodies are dead.  The image of the king of Babylon cast into "hell" along with his living harpists and their harps is represeented as conscious people greeting him.

Isaiah 9:18 For wickedness burneth as the fire:
         it shall devour the briers and thorns,
        and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest,
        and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.
Isaiah 9:19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened,
        and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.
Isaiah 9:20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry;
        and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied:
        they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
Isaiah 9:21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh:
        and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away,
        but his hand is stretched out still.

Christ in Spirit spoke through the prophets and said that the Dead would be there to greet the king of Babylon as a type of Lucifer.

Isaiah 14:9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming:
        it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth;
        it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
Isaiah 14:10 All they shall speak and say unto thee,
        Art thou also become weak as we?
        art thou become like unto us?
Isaiah 14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave,
        and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the maggots cover thee.

Who is willing to say that Christ in Spirit just flat lied?  The garbage pit in Babylon was a a physical hell with burning flesh and gnawing maggots.  However, this is the TYPE: the literal hell is the antitype.
We may not know all of the meaning of Christ warning the types of "Lucifer" but we would be in danger to say that God does not speak to an issue or that Tertullian invented hell.  Edward Fudge cannot say that even at the literal hell outside of Jerusalem the ungodly people were annihilated. It is still possible that their spirit was conscious.

Christ defines FOR WHOM hell was created.

Must ye always rejoice, and go into my holy places continually, as they that keep a feast?
        and must ye go with a
pipe, as those that rejoice into the mountain of the Lord,
        to the God of Israel Isaiah 30:29 LXX
Isa 30:30 And the Lord shall make his glorious voice to be hearrd
        and the wrath of his arm, to make a display with wrath
        and of anger and devouring [swallow] flame:
        he shall lighten terribly, and his wrath shall be as water and vionent hail.

The rise of hell as a favorite of book writers comes along with those joking about "Worship Wars" where the same people love to sow massive discord in order to "find a place in the mainstream for those who both repulse and attract."  Edward Fudge has been a guiding star in misleading people: again he denies the clear words of the Bible and may have been instructed "beyond the sacrecd pages."

There are other places which make the Devil the source of those who have prepared themselves for hell. God does not allow any Godly person to go there.

God prepares a place for the burning since He is the only Creator.  However, from Babylonian Tablets onward these places were prepared for human sacrifices replaced by the burnt offering of goats etc.  God will use these as TYPES for the wicked people to be tormented forever.

"We may understand a thing as spoken generally, even when it requires a certain special interpretation to be given to it. For some things spoken with a special reference contain in them general truth.

When God admonishes the Isrealites of their duty, or sharply reproves them,
        He has surely a reference
to all men;

when He threatens destruction to Egypt and Ethiopia,

He surely pre-condemns every sinning nation, whatever.

If, reasoning from species to genus, every nation that sins against them is an Egypt and Ethiopia; so also, reasoning from genus to species, with reference to the origin of shows, every show is an assembly of the wicked.

They get what the ask for because they were always warned NOT to cast themselves into hell.

Isaiah 66:17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.

Burned but NOT consumed

Exodus 3:1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: a

Exodus 3:2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
Exodus 3:3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

Burned and consumed.
Leviticus 9:23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation,

Leviticus 9:24 And there came a fire out from before the LORD,

Fudge deals with those examples where people DIE: Jesus said that the young girl was not dead but only sleeping. When Jesus spoke of the destiny of the good and evil He clearly spoke in terms of torment.  I may not know what that means but being a Christain I think I will not call Jesus a liar.
Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died,
        and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom:
        the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments,
        and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me,
        and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water,
        and cool my tongue;
for I am tormented in this flame.
Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things,
        and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Tertullian, Fudge's favorite: in the Gospel itself they will be found to have the clearest evidence for the corporeal nature of the soul. In hell the soul of a certain man is in torment, punished in flames, suffering excruciating thirst, and imploring from the finger of a happier soul, for his tongue, the solace of a drop of water. Luke 16:23-24

Do you suppose that this end of the blessed poor man and the miserable rich man is only imaginary? Then why the name of Lazarus in this narrative, if the circumstance is not in (the category of) a real occurrence? But even if it is to be regarded as imaginary, it will still be a testimony to truth and reality. For unless the soul possessed corporeality, the image of a soul could not possibly contain a finger of a bodily substance;
Luke 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
Luke 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham:
        but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
Luke 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets,
        neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Jesus was not annihilated according to Fudge; but while His body was resting uncorrupted in the tomb He went in Spirit to prach to the dead.  Pretty silly text if they have been annihilated.

Before the crucifixion, Jesus had LIFE in Himself.

John 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself;
        so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
John 5:27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also,
        because he is the Son of man.
John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming,
        in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
John 5:29 And shall come forth;
        they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life;
        and they that have done evil,
unto the resurrection of damnation.

Wouldn't it be really silly to resurrect the evil just to annilate them in a lake of fire. The Lake of Fire IS their second death.

John 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, t
        hou shouldest see the glory of God?
John 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid.
        And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
John 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always:
        but because of the people which stand by I said it,
        that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 11:43 And when he thus had spoken,
        he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth,
        bound hand and foot with graveclothes:
        and his face was bound about with a napkin.
        Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
Isn't it an insult (blasphemy) to claim that instead of everlasting punishment Jesus REALLY meant Annihilation?

Every person goes into the grave: only the wicked go into hell.

The prophetic Type:
Isaiah 66:24 And they shall go forth,
        and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me:
        for their worm shall not die,
        neither shall their fire be quenched;
        and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Cădāver A corpse among other things means the dead body of a person: this person is being destroyed BODY and SOUL.  However, this says nothing about their spirit.

The prophets by Christ treat this as a company of people still alive in the spirit.
The Fulfilled anti-type or a "pattern to be imitated."
Mark 9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me,
        it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck,
        and he were cast into the sea.
Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed,
        than having two hands to go into hell [Gehenna, ]

Aeternus , I. without beginning or end, eternal (sempiternus denotes what is perpetual, what exists as long as time endures, and keeps even pace with it; aeternus, the eternal, that which is raised above all time, and can be measured only by œonsaiōnes, indefinite periods); for Tempus est pars quaedam aeternitatis,Cic. Inv. 1, 27, 39. Syn. I. p. 3).

Tertullian used by Fudge, the SDA, etal as the INVENTOR of the living soul they falsely claim was derived from Plato.

Tertullian: "For unless the soul possessed corporeality, the image of a soul could not possibly contain a finger of a bodily substance;  nor would the Scripture feign a statement about the limbs of a body, if these had no existence. But what is that which is removed to Hades after the separation of the body; which is there detained; which is reserved until the day of judgment; to which Christ also, on dying, descended? I imagine souls of the patriarchs. But wherefore (all this), if the soul is nothing in its subterranean abode? For nothingsoulprison or lodging, in the fire or in Abraham's bosom, it gives proof thereby of its own corporeality. For an incorporeal thing suffers nothing, not having that which makes it capable of suffering; else, if it has such capacity, it must be a bodilysubstance. For in as far as every corporeal thing is capable of suffering, in so far is that which is capable of suffering also corporeal.tastes in Hades",

FUDGE CLAIMS THAT HIS WORK IS PROVIDENTIAL TO REFUTE MOST OF CHURCH HISTORY.

I will back up a bit: Some data on Gehenna: this is a physical TYPE whereas Jesus was explaining the future destiny of those who reject His Word--as it has been taught.

2Chronicles 28:1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father:
2Chronicles 28:2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.
2Chronicles 28:3 moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.

:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Everyone dies: Jesus was speaking of something beyond being unconscious on the garbage heep:

Matt 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that
    one of thy members should perish,
    and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Yes! Jesus was in Jerusalem: what better parable (to fool the clergy) to define the nature of hell than the garbage pit where people and animals were cast to be consumed by fire or be eaten alive by maggots: the worn dieth not. You have to look beyond the temporary image of hell to grasp that Jesus was not a fool: He was speaking to people about eternal FACTS.

This is where the Levites (not musical worship ministers but Soothsayers with instrumental accompaniement) helped burn infants in the red hot arms of Molech.

Fudge says that God has no right to be "righteous and just." That would destroy "evangelism." However, it isn't hard to escape hell and God has provided an easy way: those who lie to God and About God and especially for cash have bought a ticked to hell DARING God to punish people who have spend their life debunking the Word of God.

Matt Dabbs  2.    What has been the most humbling finding in your studies on hell and annihilation?

Edward Fudge: It is extraordinarily humbling to realize, as I soon did, that we all have overlooked most of the Bible's teaching about the end of the wicked, all the while feeling so sure that we had a complete understanding of that subject.

However, I have found no evidence that Fudge goes beyond just listing words involving "destruction" without looking at the detail.  It would requre a small book to list the context of the passage references and define words.  All of the referencesin the OT are TYPES. We have not overlooked them but we have not tried to deny the meaning of the text.

Matt Dabbs  3.    What has been the most surprising reaction you have gotten from people in regard to your teaching and writing on the subject?

Edward Fudge: Two reactions compete for  that title, and both are as unreasonable as they are surprising. The first is the anger some people exhibit,
        seemingly from a deep sense of insecurity,
        and an almost fiendish desire for others to suffer everlasting torment.
        It is as if their own happiness in eternity depended on the misery of others.

Why do we doubt that? My experience has been that these passages have been read and discussed but never make into a HOBBY to ride to the bank.  Why would a sense of insecurity cause one to "speak that which is written" without a huge effort to NEED to explain it away.

To claim to be led by God and accuse those who just read what is written of having a fiendish desire for others to suffer may indicate lack of conficence in his own human imagination.

By gloating about the DEATH OF A DISTINCTIVE it seems that Edward's happiness depends of creating misery for those just reading the word.

Most churches were originally built on the foundation commanded by Christ for the synagogue or church in the wilderness, and Jesus who used the words ekklesia or synagogue: disciples never pass judgment on their master and is seems unreasonable that MOST people failed to understand the STATEMENTS OF THE TEXT. You can wrangle over words but Edward's definitions are not those within the sacred pages or church history.

Edward's claim of providence "beyond the page" may have something to do with it.

Edward Fudge: The second surprising reaction has been the stubborn refusal by so many Christian leaders--pastors, scholars, teachers and the like—to seriously consider what the Bible actually says on the subject.  Instead they focus on "what the church has always taught," what some human creed or confession says on the subject, or how a given explanation fits into their own End-Time (eschatological) system. This malady seems especially to afflict Reformed folk and Dispensational folk.

I don't know how big the poll was to claim that the view of clergy is just "traditionalism." Most preachers I have known can read the text and just leave it where it has rested for thousands of years.  I have heard most of the passages which clearly SAY that the wicked will be punished "forever and ever" and no one I know has ever translated to to say that the wicked will be executed. Lots of preachers have prepared themselves to teach about and discuss the Jehovah Witnesses' view similat to what Edward Fudge presented to them.

Something not supported by any translation by 2,000 years of scholarship and the church fathers is likely to be met with doubt when the proof is derived from quoting proof texts.

Matt Dabbs  4.    What has been the biggest “aha” moment for you in your study on this topic?

NONE OF THE SCHOLARS OF NOTE HAVE READ TERTULLIAN!

Edward Fudge: A giant "Aha!" occurred when I finally discovered the actual linkage in logic between the doctrine of unending conscious torment and the pagan Greek belief that every human has an immortal soul.

During the  second century of the Christian era, certain converted Greek philosophers brought the idea of the immortal soul into the Church, and it quickly became the  basis for teaching unending conscious torment.

This is crystal clear in the writings of Tertullian, for example, who was a chief culprit in the process.

Tertullian's longest work is on the Soul (de Anima) and he is explicit in grounding unending torment in the Platonic belief that every human has an immortal or deathless soul.

THIS IS UTTERLY FALSE: PROBABLY DERIVED FROM SOME FALSE WRITER. Immortal meant that it always existed as long as God existed.  Tertullian proves that the views of the church were based on Scripture which did not contradict the views of some Greeks. He also proves that many of the Greek views were derives from the Hebrew Bible.

Psalm 35:21 Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me,
        and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.
Psalms 35:20 For they speak not peace:
        but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.
Psalms 35:21 Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me,
        and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.
Psalm 40:15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
Psalm 40:14-16 (in Context) Psalm 40 (Whole Chapter)
Psalm 70:3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.
Psalms 70:2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul:
        let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt.
Psalms 70:3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.
Psalms 70:4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee:
        and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.

What Has Happened to Hellfire? Jehovah's Witnesses

Most scholarship notes that the Greeks derived many of their ideas from Egypt and the Hebrew people.

The Greeks made fun of Christian beliefs and thus HINDERED them in evangelism. Tertullian notes that the Greeks also believed in a place for the ungodly.

The Real Tertullian on the Soul: you can read Tertullian and not some anti-hell copy cat.

THE TERTULLIAN FALLACY

Tertullian used by Fudge and all that went before him especially the SDA and the non-instiitutionals say that the view of eternal torment was derived from Plato:  people will believe this utterly false claim because someone has put it into print, claimed inspiration and the endorsement of the doctors of the law.  By what logic should people rise up against God and His Word and just be EXECUTED.   Nirvana is the desired goal of many people.

The real tertullian Chapter 3. The Soul's Origin Defined Out of the Simple Words of Scripture

"Would to God that no heresies had been ever necessary, in order that they which are approved may be made manifest! 1 Corinthians 11:19 WE should then be never required to try our strength in contests about the soul with philosophers, those patriarchs of heretics, as they may be fairly called.
        The apostle, so far back as his own time, foresaw, indeed, that philosophy would do violent injury to the truth. Colossians 2:8 This admonition about false philosophy he was induced to offer after he had been at Athens, had become acquainted with that loquacious city, and had there had a taste of its huckstering wiseacres and talkers....

WE relied even there on the clear direction of the inspired statement which informs us how that the Lord God breathed on man's face the breath of life, so that man became a living soul Genesis 2:7

No matter how many passages you can find from the OT speaking of people perishing, that speaks only of their physical death.  Never will they quote those passages which define hell as an EXECUTION OF THE SPIRIT chamber but of eternal punishment.  They were reserved for judgment.  As far as we know they are still waiting for the final judgment.

Jesus said that if you are faithful to His Words which He heard from the One God, the world (Kosmos) will HATE you, despise you and reject you.  In fact, they will not applaud you but crucify you. That is the MARK of any person who goes beyond the sacred pages.  It is doubtful that all of the scholarship which went into all of the Bible translations failed to understand words like "eternal" and gnashing of teeth.
Tertullian whom Fudge slanders, notes that if removing a physical member of flesh can prevent the whole body from being cast into hell, hell cannot be the same as causing that member to perish.
For nothingsoulprison or lodging, in the fire or in Abraham's bosom, it gives proof thereby of its own corporeality."
Chapter XIX

But how much more worthy of acceptance is OUR belief which maintains that they will return to the same bodies!
        And how much more ridiculous is your inherited conceit,
        Traditum.
that the human spirit is to reappear in a dog, or a mule, or a peacock!

Again,
WE affirm that a judgment has been ordained by God according to the merits of every man.
        This you ascribe to Minos and Rhadamanthus,
        while at the same time you reject Aristides, who was a juster judge than either.

By the award of the judgment, WE say that
the wicked will have to spend an eternity in endless fire,
the pious and innocent in a region of bliss.
        In your view likewise an unalterable condition is ascribed to the respective destinations
        of Pyriphlegethon  [The heathen hell, Tartarus or Orcus]. and Elysium.

Now they are not merely your composers of myth and poetry who write songs of this strain;
        but your philosophers also speak with all confidence of the return of souls to their former state,
         Reciprocatione. and of the twofold award [Distributione of a final judgment.]

This was incarnation.

Chapter LIV. Chapter LIV.-Whither Does the Soul Retire When It Quits the Body? Opinions of Philosophers All More or Less Absurd. The Hades of Plato.

To the question, therefore, whither the soul is withdrawn, we now give an answer. Almost all the philosophers, who hold the soul's immortality, notwithstanding their special views on the subject, still claim for it this (eternal condition), as Pythagoras, and Empedocles, and Plato, and as they who indulge it with some delay from the time of its quitting the flesh to the conflagration of all things, and as the Stoics, who place only their own souls, that is, the souls of the wise, in the mansions above.

Plato, it is true, does not allow this destination to all the souls, indiscriminately, of even all the philosophers, but only of those who have cultivated their philosophy out of love to boys. So great is the privilege which impurity obtains at the hands of philosophers! In his system, then, the souls of the wise are carried up on high into the ether: according to Arius, into the, air; according to the Stoics, into the moon.

Tertullian Apology 47 For, like us, the poets and philosophers set up a judgment-seat in the realms below.

And if WE threaten Gehenna, which is a reservoir of secret fire under the earth for purposes of punishment, we have in the same way derision heaped on us.

For so, too, they have their Pyriphlegethon, a river of flame in the regions of the dead.

And if WE speak of Paradise, the place of heavenly bliss appointed to receive the spirits of the saints, severed from the knowledge of this world by that fiery zone as by a sort of enclosure,

the Elysian plains have taken possession of their faith.

Whence is it, I pray you have all this, so like us, in the poets and philosophers? The reason simply is, that they have been taken from our religion. But if they are taken from our sacred things, as being of earlier date, then ours are the truer, and have higher claims upon belief, since even their imitations find faith among you. http://www.theoi.com/Khthonios/PotamosPyriphlegethon.html

If providence--meaning God guiding you--is true as claimed one had better test the spirits who won't even let you quote the secular literature truthfully.  None of the sectarians have ever read Tertullian.

Edward Fudge: Tertullian's longest work is on the Soul (de Anima) and he is explicit in grounding unending torment in the Platonic belief that every human has an immortal or deathless soul.

He didn't get that from Tertullian: why claim a providential revelation while not telling the truth about Tertullian?

Consistent with the Jehovah's Witnessess and other people rejecting hell:

Without hesitation, Tertullian referred directly to Plato in his writings. Plato's primary theme, "every soul is immortal," became Tertullian's unwavering platform (Tertullian, On the Resurrection, chap.3, quoted in ANF, vol.3, p. 547).

Tertullian and Jesus stand in opposition to Fudge: if his Aha is wrong then he should repent:

Chapter 3. The Soul's Origin Defined Out of the Simple Words of Scripture

Would to God that no heresies had been ever necessary, in order that they which are approved may be made manifest! 1 Corinthians 10:19 WE should then be never required to try our strength in contests about the soul with philosophers, those patriarchs of heretics, as they may be fairly called.

Tertullian Chapter 4. In Opposition to Plato, the Soul Was Created and Originated at Birth
After settling the origin of the soul, its condition or state comes up next. For when we acknowledge that the soul originates in the breath of God, it follows that we attribute a beginning to it.
        This Plato, indeed, refuses to assign to it, for he will have the soul to be unborn and unmade.

WE, however, from the very fact of its having had a beginning, as well as from the nature thereof, teach that it had both birth and creation. And when we ascribe both birth and creation to it, we have made no mistake: for being born, indeed, is one thing, and being made is another—the former being the term which is best suited to living beings. When distinctions, however, have places and times of their own, they occasionally possess also reciprocity of application among themselves. Thus, the being made admits of being taken in the sense of being brought forth; inasmuch as everything which receives being or existence, in any way whatever, is in fact generated. For the maker may really be called the parent of the thing that is made:
         in this sense Plato also uses the phraseology. So far, therefore, as concerns our belief in the souls being made or born, the opinion of the philosopher is overthrown by the authority of prophecy even.

Chapter 7. The Soul's Corporeality Demonstrated Out of the Gospels
So far as the philosophers are concerned, we have said enough. As for our own teachers, indeed, our reference to them is ex abundanti— a surplusage of authority:
in the Gospel itself they will be found to have the clearest evidence for the corporeal nature of the soul. In hell the soul of a certain man is in torment, punished in flames, suffering excruciating thirst, and imploring from the finger of a happier soul, for his tongue, the solace of a drop of water. Luke 16:23-24

Do you suppose that this end of the blessed poor man and the miserable rich man is only imaginary? Then why the name of Lazarus in this narrative, if the circumstance is not in (the category of) a real occurrence? But even if it is to be regarded as imaginary, it will still be a testimony to truth and reality. For unless the soul possessed corporeality, the image of a soul could not possibly contain a finger of a bodily substance;

        nor would the Scripture feign [lie] a statement about the limbs of a body, if these had no existence.
For in as far as every corporeal thing is capable of suffering, in so far is that which is capable of suffering also corporeal
tastes in Hades,
it is the it certainly is, if it is not a bodily substance. For whatever is incorporeal is incapable of being kept and guarded in any way; it is also exempt from either punishment or refreshment. That must be a body, by which punishment and refreshment can be experienced. Of this I shall treat more fully in a more fitting place. Therefore, whatever amount of punishment or refreshment
1Corinthians 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.
        There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Edward Fudge: Of course, the Bible says that only God is inherently immortal. Every time the Scripture speaks of human immortality, it is always talking about the saved, never about the lost; always about an embodied being, never about a disembodied soul or spirit; always in the resurrection, never now.

That's what the REAL Tertullian said. Immortal according to Plato means eternal, always existing.

Psu_kh-ē , ,

Matt Dabbs  5.    Why do you believe it is important that we understand the duration of hell?

Edward Fudge: Let me say first that hell will be a place of eternal punishment that is everlasting in duration. This "eternal" punishment is capital punishment, "everlasting destruction," as Paul puts it in 2 Thessalonians 1. This punishment will endure as long as does eternal life.

Fudge: Eternal punishment means Capital Punishment.  Eternal means TO TERMINATE?

One wonders why the Spirit was unable to say that they will be killed? I wonder still why scholars missed prepositional phrases.

1Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety;
        then sudden destruction cometh upon them,
        as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
2Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction
             from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power

Fudge:
2Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with capital punishment
             from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power

Paul speaks in clear sentences whic does not mean "destruction", but "Destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.  It is pretty easy to try to make the Spirit of Christ pretty simple minded.

If destruction means Capital Punishment why would anyone speak of eternal capital punishment?

From the fire that consumes:

Edward Fudge: [Jesus] can conquer death only by actually dying, by betaking Himself to the sphere of death, the destroyer of life, to the sphere of nothingness....

Whoever wants to conquer death must die; he must really cease to live -
not simply live on as an immortal soul; but die in body and soul, lose life itself....

Furthermore, if life is to issue out of so genuine a death as this, a new divine act of creation is necessary. And this act of creation calls back to life not just a part of man,
        but the whole man - all that God had created and death had annihilated. p. 144-145

For those on the Lord's Side!

1Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins,
        the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God,
        being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1Thessalonians 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord,
        that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord
        shall not prevent them which are asleep

Then, says Fudge, the OLDEN Jesus was NOT resurrected?

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth
shall awake,
        some to everlasting life,

        and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Daniel 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried;
        but the wicked shall do wickedly:
                and none of the wicked shall understand;
                but the wise shall understand.

Romans 6:6 Knowing this,
        that our old man is crucified with him,
        that the body of sin might be destroyed,
        that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Romans 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Romans 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more;
        death hath no more dominion over him.

G1453 egeirō eg-i'-ro Probably akin to the base of G58 (through the idea of collecting one’s faculties); to waken (transitively or intransitively), that is, rouse (literally from sleep, from sitting or lying, from disease, from death; or figuratively from obscurity, inactivity, ruins, nonexistence):—awake, lift (up), raise (again, up), rear up, (a-) rise (again, up), stand, take up.
Resurrection does not mean REcreation.
1Corinthians 15:12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead,
        how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
1Corinthians 15:13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
1Corinthians 15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
1Corinthians 15:15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God;
         because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ:
            whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
1Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1Corinthians 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
1Corinthians 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Dead does not mean annihilated but separated from the old sinful nature.

2Corinthians 5:15 And that he died for all,
        that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves,
        but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

THAT'S NOT TRUE SAYS EDWARD FUDGE

Edward Fudge: Every scriptural implication is that if Jesus had not been raised, He - like those fallen asleep in Him - would simply have perished (1 Cor 15:18). His resurrection reverses every such estimation of affairs assuring us instead of the death of Death (2 Tim 1:10; Heb 2:14; Rev 20:14). p. 230

Satan's task was to annihilate godly human nature beginning in the garden of Eden.  The role of Christ was to destroy the power of Satan.  Without Christ the body would not be REsurrected. Paul is speaking of the body which will be changed and not the soul which God put into that person and only He can destroy the Soul.

Not yet: Death and all practicing sinners will be cast alive into the Lake of Fire: the second death.

1Corinthians 15:24 Then cometh the end,
        when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father;
        when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1Corinthians 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
1Corinthians 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet.
        But when he saith all things are put under him,
        it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
1Corinthians 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him,
        then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him,
        that God may be all in all.
1Corinthians 15:29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead,
         if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
1Corinthians 15:30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?
1Corinthians 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

Edward Fudge: "Such was the cup Jesus accepted from God's hand in Gethsemane, and to drink it unmixed He refused even the numbing wine offered by His murderers (Matt. 26:39, 42, 44; 27:34). He suffered torment of body and soul. More than that, He drained the cup of God's wrath, passively enduring the simultaneous draining of His own life into total death  p 296]

That means that the First Jesus of Nazareth was ANNIHILATED. That denies that the same Jesus of Nazareth was resurrected: He was so totally smashed and annihilated that God was forced to RECREATE the person.

The fact is that the power of the Devil was to deny the ressurrection of the flesh.

Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood,
        he also himself likewise took part of the same;
        that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

The devil did not have the power to corrupt the body or destroy His Spirit1

If Jesus had been annihilated body, soul and spirit then SATAN WON.

It was the Spirit of Christ in the flesh of Jesus of Nazareth as "a body prepared for me."
If you claim that Christ the Spirit was ANNILATED then may God be with you.
The devil led the destruction of the flesh but to give him the power to destroy the Spirit which God put into Jesus makes one wonder about that "spirit providence."

John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.
        I have power to lay it down,
        and I have power to take it again.
        This commandment have I received of my Father.
Those who died before were "in prison." The Spirit Christ was not in the tomb:

        and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways;
        by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2Peter 2:3 And through covetousness shall they
        with feigned words make merchandise of you:
        whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not,
        and their damnation slumbereth not.

Jude 14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying,
        Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
Jude 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them
        of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed,
        and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
Jude 16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts;
        and their mouth speaketh great swelling words,
        having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.
Jude 17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Jude 18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time,
        who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
Jude 19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
Jude 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
Jude 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Jude 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:
Jude 23 And others save with fear,
        pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
The Book of Enoch Chapter 10
1
Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spake, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, 2 and said to him: Go to Noah and tell him in my name "Hide thyself!" and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come
3
upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it. And now instruct him that he may escape
4
and his seed may be preserved for all the generations of the world. And again the Lord said to Raphael: Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening
5
in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may
6
,7 not see light. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire. And heal the earth which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of the earth, that they may heal the plague, and that all the children of men may not perish through all the secret things that the
8
Watchers have disclosed and have taught their sons. And the whole earth has been corrupted
9
through the works that were taught by Azazel: to him ascribe all sin. And to Gabriel said the Lord: Proceed against the bastards and the reprobates, and against the children of fornication: and destroy [the children of fornication and] the children of the Watchers from amongst men [and cause them to go forth]: send them one against the other that they may destroy each other in
10
battle: for length of days shall they not have. And no request that they (i.e. their fathers) make of thee shall be granted unto their fathers on their behalf; for they hope to live an eternal life, and
11
that each one of them will live five hundred years. And the Lord said unto Michael: Go, bind Semjaza and his associates who have united themselves with women so as to have defiled themselves
12
with them in all their uncleanness. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation, till the judgement that is
13
for ever and ever is consummated. In those days they shall be led off to the abyss of fire: and
14 to the torment and the prison in which they shall be confined for ever. And whosoever shall be condemned and destroyed will from thenceforth be bound together with them to the end of all

The One and only God the Father made Jesus of Nazareth to be both Lord and Christ: it was the Spirit OF Christ who dwelled in the man Jesus.

That Christ was the ROCK in the wilderness and does not die. The Spirit of Christ was still alive and well while the SAME FLESH was in the tomb without rotting. That SAME Jesus got up, took off the shrouds, walked out of the sealed tomb and gathered with his disciples.

John said that if you deny that you are an

Fudge says that the prophecies by the Spirit OF Christ FAILED.

Justin Martyr:
And the prayer that His soul should be saved from the sword, and lion's mouth, and hand of the dog, was a prayer that no one should take possession of His soul: so that, when we arrive at the end of life, we may ask the same petition from God, who is able to turn away every shameless evil angel from taking our souls. And that the souls survive, I have shown to you from the fact that the soul of Samuel was called up by the witch, as Saul demanded. And it appears also, that all the souls of similar righteous men and prophets fell under the dominion of such powers, as is indeed to be inferred from the very facts in the case of that witch. Hence also God by His Son teaches us for whose sake these things seem to have been done, always to strive earnestly,
and at death to pray that our souls may not fall into the hands of any such power. For when Christ was giving up His spirit on the cross, He said, "Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit, ' [Luke xxiii.46] as I have learned also from the memoirs
Can you REALLY believe that God annihilated the Soul of Jesus Christ?

One wonders why the Spirit was unable to say that they will be killed?

Skipable: what shall we say?

Edward Fudge: I see three main reasons why it is important for us to understand the biblical teaching on this topic. If we claim that we are telling people what God has said -- on any subject -- we have a fearful duty to do our best to get the message straight. Throughout Scripture, God has shown himself quite unhappy whenever someone announces a  message not from him and calls it the word of God. It is important that we diligently try to understand this teaching correctly in order to be faithful spokespersons.

Jesus invited Disciples to come be baptized and be taught what  HE commanded to be taught. That was the command for the church in the wilderness which was to Rest, Read and Rehears  the Word.  The synagogue practiced and endorsed by Jesu was to teach the Word of God (only). They were to PREACH the Word by READING the Word without private interpretation which means "further expounding."

2,000 years of scholarship has not altered any of the texts Edward Fudges wants to reinterprete being led by God Himself. If you don't obey the direct command you do NOT get the message straight:

Romans 15:1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak,
         and not to please ourselves. [none of the hypocritic performing arts or crafts]
Romans 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. [Education}
Romans 15:3 For even Christ pleased not himself;
        but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,
        that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Romans 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation
        grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Romans 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God,
        even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:7 Wherefore receive ye one another,
        as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Edward Fudge:  Second, the traditional doctrine of hell has often been a  hindrance to evangelism and a stumbling block to faith. Through the centuries, the teaching of everlasting torment has driven away many would-be believers and has actually turned many people into atheists. Famous atheists from Bertrand Russell to Antony Flew have specifically stated that they cannot believe in a god who would make people stay alive forever to torment them for deeds done in a few years lifetime. If the Bible really taught the doctrine, we should just have to live with it. But since it does not teach unending torment in hell, that doctrine is an unnecessary impediment to the spread of the gospel, and for that reason needs to be abandoned and forgotten.

We have shown that this is a slander against God: Jesus prepared a place for those disciples who read and studied the Word of God without further expounding it. The "traditional" (that RACA word) has been to teach the Word as it has been taught which is the command to any godly elder.

Those who subconsciously worship the Devil will prepare their own place by teaching the Words of the Devil which is anyone speaking "on their own."  We can abandon all Dogma but we cannot abandon the CLEAR statementsof Scripture.

Matt Dabbs  7.    What practical implications does that have in the lives of Christians today?

These three reasons involve our vision of the character of God, the way we relate to him ourselves, and how we represent him to others. What could possibly be more practical than that?

The imagination of man is only evil continually, says God: we are not god-like enough to decide what is just and right.  In the examples, it seems that people have chosen their own destiny.

Matt Dabbs  8.    What has been the most difficult verse you have wrestled with or been the closest to sway you away from annihilationism?

Edward Fudge: The only verse in the Bible that actually speaks of any creature being tormented forever  is Revelation 20:10. In this symbolic vision, John saw the devil, the beast,  and the false prophet  thrown into the lake of fire, where they "were tormented day and night forever."

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving,
        and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers,
        and sorcerers, and idolaters,
        and all liars, shall have their part [
hare, portion,]
        in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone:
        which is the second death.

Note that there are no humans in that picture. Further,  every time the book of Revelation pictures people in the lake of fire, it always explains that the lake of fire represents the "second death."

Even in Revelation, the final options for humans are either to have their names in the Book of LIFE (the registry of living citizens in the heavenly city), or to be thrown into the lake of fire AND suffer the second DEATH.

The second death MEANS to be cast alive into the lake of fire.
The Second Death is not Capital Punishment of the Soul:  death means eternal separation from God. Otherwise, you need a providential spirit guide to have to say that none of the Bible means what everyone can read in BLACK text on BROWN paper.

Edward Fudge ignores the fact that many or most of the evil "occupations" of humans being influenced by Death and Hades are also cast into the Lake of Fire.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving,
        and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers,
        and sorcerers, and idolaters,
        and all liars, shall have their part [
hare, portion,]
        in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone:
        which is the second death.

Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken,
        and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him,
        with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast,
        and them that worshipped his image.
        These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
[which IS the Second Death] Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone,
        where the beast and the false prophet are,
        and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. aiōn

Here are the humans who are deceived by the beast and false prophet are also cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving,
        and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers,
        and sorcerers, and idolaters,
        and all liars, shall have their part [
hare, portion,]
        in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone:
        which is the second death.

In the vision of the new heaven:

Revelation 21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth,
        neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie:
        but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers,
        and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Can't we assume that all who are deceived and cast into the Lake of Fire will be there for ever and ever?

HERE ARE SOME OF THE SORCERERS

        for God hath avenged you on her.
Revelation 18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone,

        and shall be found no more at all.
Revelation 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
Revelation 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Revelation 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Pseudo-prophētēs , ou, ho, A.  false, lying prophet, J.AJ9.6.6, al., 2 Ep.Pet.2.1,

In 2 Peter 1 Paul outlawed private interpretation or further expounding: that would repudiate the Apostles and Jesus who revealed His Will further after His resurrection and continued existence as The Holy Spirit.

In 2 Peter 2 he defined those who Go BEYOND the sacred page as identical to the false prophets:
2 Pet. 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people,
        even as there shall be false teachers among you,
        who privily shall bring in damnable heresies,
        even denying the Lord that bought them,
        and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2Pet. 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways;
        by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2Pet. 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:
        whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
2Pet. 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned,
        but cast them down to hell, and delivered them
        into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
Paradidōmi give, hand over to another, transmit, entered in an inventory by magistrates, of sentinels.
2Pet. 2:5 And spared not the old world,
        but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness,
        bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

2 Peter 2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing,
vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations,
and to
reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

The Second Death is not annihilation, but being cast alive into the lake of fire. That includes MORE than the Beast and False Prophets as Fudge claims.
