O.E.PAYNE probably made the first list of the "psallo" word as used in the Bible and Greek literature. It will not surprise many that all of the "plucking" proof texts have to do with an older male plucking a lyre to seduce a young boy.  Anyone with a good human spirit willl never find the "psallo" word having any musical connection.  It literally means to "pluck or smite with your fingers and NEVER with a plectrum."  Therefore, it takea an UNholy spirit to use that word and force fit it to mean "blow a flute" or clang on brass.

Christ in Isaiah and Jesus in fulfillment commanded that we save ourselves from that crooked generation or race.  Jesus called the Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites and in the Ezekiel 33 version named slick rhetoricians, singers and instrument players. That is why the "persona" at Pepperdine will promote a return to the Monarchy which demanded a king or "senior pastor" which usurped the authority of the elders.  While Pepperdine supports the "a cappella" view it is a fact that those honored as "thought leaders" have decided to use the resources of non-instrumental churches of Christ to establish "missional" or "daughter" churches which WILL be instrumental.

Jesus defined the CENI in the Great Commission:
Matt. 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:

The NACC and the few diverted congregations deny that they are bound by the Commmands, examples and necessary inferences. Therefore, Christ's presumed silence gives them the authority to make a law to impose "instrumental praise" and those who object are invited to get over it or get out.  The law of silence clearly defined by God in Christ means that YOU have no authority to demand something which Christ has not commanded knowing that it will sow massive discord.

Those who are delusional believe that they have THE Holy Spirit as a person guiding them "beyond the sacred page" and even deliberately discording people by telling them that "a" spirit told him to lie about all of the "instrument" passages. The Spirit OF Christ does not lie, cheat or steal the church houses of widoes.

In the Bible we read:

        the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

The Father delivered spirit or breath which was articulated by Jesus as the Incarnate Word: Jesus insissted that He would not speak anything that He did not hear from the one God the Father in heaven.  He spoke that which was delivered by God's "breath" without METER.  To affirm that this is the proper and common meaning we note that NONE of the Bible is metrical and you cannot sing it tunefully. The alternative is to violate Paul's command to use "that which was written" and speak it with one mind and one mouth as the only way to glorify or praise God.

Jesus in John 12-4 identifies the TWO FOLD exchange of information from God the Father and Jesus of Nazareth as the Son through whom the invisible, inaudible singular Deity communicated. In John 16 He identified the "proverbal" or parabolic of communicating to the human mind. Furthermore, in Matthew 13 He said that truth had been hidden in parables from the foundation of the world. This was to deprive the Scribes and Pharisse, hypocrites which the Spirit OF Christ marked as self-speakers, singers and instrument players, of the spirit OF Truth.

Classical trinitarians and the Campbells affirmed that the meaning of God's SON was God's WORD as in speaking. Christ in Spirit spoke through the prophets, Jesus of Nazareth as the human Messiah spoke only what the Father told him to speak.

All of the salutations toward the end of the writing period use the TWO ACTORS teaching.

The INDWELLING in John 14 is:

The Father-Son abides in or with those who keep His commandments.
Those whokeep His commandments abide in the Father-Son.

The SON of God, agree trinitarians, is the WORD of God Who "BEGOT" Him when He began to speak.

THE DANGER OF PEOPLE WHO CLAIM THAT 'a' SPIRIT TOLD THEM TO DELIBERATELY SOW DISCORD WILL ALWAYS BE STRONGLY DELUSIONAL: THE LYING WONDERS WILL BE MARKED BY THE PERFORMING ARTS TO SILENCE THE VOICE OF CHRIST.

Classical trinitarians say that the "Spirit" or 'breath" of God is His Wisdom and Power.  Therefore, Christ is the Word, Spirit, Grace of God personified:

The Way of Salvation: K.C.Moser has trumped the historic views of the Restoration Movement:

It may have been from K.C.Moser that H.Leo Boles soaked up his totally radical view of Tritheism first lectured at FHU in 1938 and published in 1942.  This began the heresy of the Godhead as three persons able to stand side by side or face to face; ranked 1, 2 and 3 and able to hold conferences about which would be best suited for the three dispensations. This fed into the Gospel Advocate Sunday School material: when I returned to Tennessed they were "worshiping the name of God, the name of Jesus and the name of the Holy Spirit.
Firstly, they have never read John Calvin who taught that receiving SPIRIT outside of the Word of God was the views of fanatics. He said that the two direct operations of God were the WORD and sending out preachers. Faith still came by hearing the Word is the Scriptures claim.  Jesus said "my Words are Spirit and Life" so that if the "spirit person" operates outside of the Word of God then such people have no choice in what they believe.  However, understanding the meaning of "spirit" as "mind" (1 Cor 2), the literature warns that the pre-neo-Calvinist attempts to use external means such as speaking and music it was not uncommon for an "UNholy spirit to steal in."

1.
The fanatics wrongly appeal to the Holy Spirit

Those who, rejecting Scripture, imagine that they have some peculiar way of penetrating to God, are to be deemed not so much under the influence of error as madness. For certain giddy men have lately appeared, who, while they make a great display of the superiority of the Spirit,
reject all reading of the Scriptures themselves, and deride the simplicity of those who only delight in what they call the dead and deadly letter.

But I wish they would tell me
what spirit it is whose inspiration raises them to such a sublime height that they dare despise the doctrine of Scripture as mean and childish.
If they answer that it is the Spirit of Christ, their confidence is exceedingly ridiculous;
since they will, I presume, admit that the apostles and other believers in the primitive Church were not illuminated by any other Spirit.

None of these thereby learned to
despise the word of God, but every one was imbued with greater reverence for it, as their writings most clearly testify.
And, indeed, it had been so foretold by the mouth of Isaiah. For when he says,
"My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever,"
he does not tie down the ancient Church to external doctrine, as he were a mere teacher of elements; he rather shows that,
under the reign of Christ, the true and full felicity of the new Church will consist in their being ruled not less by the Word than by the Spirit of God.
Hence we infer that these miscreants are guilty of fearful sacrilege in tearing asunder what the prophet joins in indissoluble union.
Add to this, that Paul, though carried up even to the third heaven, ceased not to profit by the doctrine of the law and the prophets, while, in like manner, he exhorts Timothy, a teacher of singular excellence, to give attention to reading, (1 Tim. 4: 13.)
This is Paul's unique word for worship in Spirit and in Truth: give attention or give heed. This is the same word in Hebrew used by David when he "worshiped" and sang songs upon his bed and meditated in his heart.
And the eulogium which he pronounces on Scripture well deserves to be remembered, viz., that
"it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect," (2 Tim. 3: 16.)
What an infatuation of the devil, therefore, to fancy that Scripture, which conducts the sons of God to the final goal, is of transient and temporary use?
Again, I should like those people to tell me whether they have imbibed any other Spirit than that which Christ promised to his disciples. Though their madness is extreme, it will scarcely carry them the length of making this their boast.
But what kind of Spirit did our Saviour promise to send? One who should not speak of himself, (John 16: 13,)
but suggest and instil the truths which he himself had delivered through the word.
Hence the office of the Spirit promised to us, is not to form new and unheard-of revelations, or to coin a new form of doctrine, by which we may be led away from the received doctrine of the gospel,
but to seal on our minds the very doctrine which the gospel recommends.
K.C.Moser consistently denies the work of the Holy Spirit by refusing to quote the words of the Spirit in context: the Holy Spirit as the "another Comforter" Jesus says is ME (Jn 14:18).  John will later say that that comforter is "Jesus Christ the Righteousness." By dividing up the Godhead Moser denies that Christ came fully in the FLESH. Father, Son and Spirit are never separated in Classical Trinitarianism nor by Calvin or the Restoration leaders.  The inventers of TRIAS all say that God is ONE: When He thinks He is the Father of the Thought. When He "speaks" it is through His Spirit (breath). The Son is always the "moutpiece" or the audible Word of God.

We will expand as we go: never drink KoolAid from anyone who says that the Spirit told him to lie about all of the Bible to impose "instrumental praise." (Rick Atchley).  Don't listen to men who get visions to remove Christ from his visible confession (Max Lucado) nor anyone who teaches that we should hear audible voices (Rick Atchley).

Chapter 7

K.C.Moser: God does not save man and then leave him to his own resources. He abides with him to help in the struggle against sin within and without. God no more manifests his interest in and love for man as a sinner than man as a son. For this the Christian should be devoutly thankful and accept gratefully any help from on high.

True: John says that the name of the "another Comforter" is Jesus Christ the Righteous. Jesus of Nazareth has died, been resurrected and changed or glorified. Jesus of Nazareth lived and lives in His post-resurrection body. We have our spirits translated into the heavenly or spiritual kingdom and we worship God the Father in the PLACE of our new holy spirit as opposed to the PLACE of Gerezim or Jerusalem. We worship IN THE SPIRIT says Paul as opposed to IN THE FLESH in Philippians 3.  The word SPIRIT and MIND and HEART are often used interchangeable. God in Christ dwells in our MIND which is not flesh and blood.

Peter speaks of the Prophets--by the Spirit of Christ--and the prophecies made more perfect as the SOLE resource for our teaching.  He outlawed private interpretation of "further expounding." The reason is that the Apostles were eye-- and ear--witnessses of the teachinga of Jesus Who validated His authority by signs and miracles.  In 2 Peter 2 he says that this is the way to mark a false teacher. We do not know how Jesus Christ the "another Comforter" works but we can speak only of what He has recorded for our learning. Peter says that by giving heed to this Word--the only worship concept--the Day Star will arise in our hearts. Because church is A School of the Word, there is nothing that can happen which calls for a fuller revelation:
2Pet. 1:3 According as his divine power
        hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness,
        through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
2Pet. 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises:
        that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature,
        having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
That is why Alexander Campbell warned of those who claim The Holy Spirit in their literal bodies cannot be trusted unless they can prove it:

Paul meant such a public and sensible exhibition of it as would commend the honesty and sincerity of the heart to every man's conscience,
by "a manifestation of the Spirit" he meant such an exhibition
        of his presence and residence in the heart,

        who professed to have received the Holy Spirit himself,
        did in truth possess that divine agent.
From all which, may it not be inferred that a person in the apostolic age, professing
        to have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Spirit himself,
        without a manifestation of it; or who was unable to display
        it by some unequivocal exhibition of it,
       
would have been considered either a knave or a simpleton?
God is not worshipped in houses built by human hands or by the works of human hands: the unique worship word in the New Testament is to "give heed to the Word of Christ."

K.C.Moser: This help comes from the Holy Spirit's dwelling in the heart of every son of God. The Christian is God's temple, in which he dwells through the Spirit;

and the Spirit becomes the source of all spirituality in man.
How appropriate such an arrangement! Our Father is Spirit; his kingdom is a spiritual one; a spiritual birth introduces one into this spiritual kingdom; the Christian is a "spiritual house, . . . a holy priesthood," with the privilege of offering up "spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." And, finally, the Christian is to be given a "spiritual body," of which the indwelling Spirit is now a pledge from God. (Rom. 8:11; 2 Cor. 5:1-5.)
Jesus as the Christ speaking of another Comforter said "I" will come to you: 1 John 2 says that the Name of the Comforter is Jesus Christ the Righteous:
John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him,
        If a man love me, he will keep my words:
        and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
John 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:
          and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

The Holy Spirit will have the same NAME as Jesus Christ existing in His post-resurrection state.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost,
        whom the Father will send in my name,
        he shall teach you all things,
        and bring all things to your remembrance,
        whatsoever I have said unto you.

That doesn't leave any further revelation: to see it, says Peter, repudiates the work of Jesus Christ:

2Pet. 1:3 According as his divine power
        hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness,
        through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Paul said:
Rom. 12:2 And be not conformed to this world:
        but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,
       
that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Luke Said:
Luke 1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest:
        for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
Luke 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation
       
unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Luke 1:78 Through the tender mercy of our God;
        whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
        To guide our feet into the way of peace.
Peter left a memory of his eye- and ear-witness of the risen Jesus Christ. He outlawed private interpretation or "further expounding" because this would repudiate the Work for which Jesus died.

        as unto a light that shineth in a dark place,
        until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Plut. Num. 14 After Numa had thus established and regulated the priestly orders, he built, near the temple of Vesta, the so-called Regia, or royal house. Here he passed most of his time, performing sacred functions, or teaching the priests, or engaged in the quiet contemplation of divine things.

Ex 9 [20] Those who feared the word of Yahweh among the servants of Pharaoh made their servants and their cattle flee into the houses
[21] Whoever didn't regard the word of Yahweh left his servants and his cattle in the field.

Luke 20.46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;

2 Chronicles 25.16 It happened, as he talked with him, that [the king] said to him, Have we made you of the king's counsel? Stop! Why should you be struck down? Then the prophet stopped, and said, I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel.
We can trust the Word of God which has been tested by time: we can never trust a person who claims that they see visions or hear audible voices or have the spirit tell them something.

The heart is often used parallel to spirit: Therefore, to have the Spirit OF Christ dwell in the MIND is not the same thing as having a literal God Person living inside which often leads to the claim that one's imagination is THE Spirit speaking to and through them.

Jesus said "my WORDS are Spirit and Life" John 6:63.  Paul in 1 Corinthians 2 drew the following parallel:

    The Holy Spirit
        Is to God
    What our spirit
         is to us
    Then Paul says "We" have the MIND of Christ.

The Spirit OF Christ is never in the trinitarian creed seen as a separate PERSON.  As in the Bible, there are two "persons" if we might call God a Person:
Acts 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens:
         but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord,
        Sit thou on my right hand,
Acts 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly,
        that God  hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified,
        both Lord and Christ.

1Tim. 2:5 For there is one God,
         and one mediator between God and men,
         the man Christ Jesus;

The Spirit is defined as the BREATH of the Father who conveys truth to the Man Jesus of Nazareth. In the same way, at baptism we receive the gift of A holy spirit--ours.  In 1 Peter 3:21 he says BAPTISM SAVES because that is where we request that God give us A good conscience. Therefore, A holy spirit is a good or pure conscience or consciousness:

Alexander Campbell and others understand that A holy spirit is OUR unholy spirit which has been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and not His "spirit."

This is...understood by every attentive reader. The original phrase is hagiasmos pneumatos, and is found only in II. Thess. ii. 13; I. Pet. i. 2. In both places it appears to refer to the sanctification of the spirit of believers.   It is literally rendered "sanctification [or holiness] of spirit." There is no article in the original and no epithet that suggests the Holy Spirit in either passage. 

God has chosen men to salvation through (or by) holiness of spirit;
       
not through the holiness of his Spirit,
        but through the holiness of their spirit.

When Jesus prayed (John xvii.) for the sanctification or holiness of his disciples,
          it was through the truth: "Sanctify them through the truth;
          thy word is truth."

The belief of the truth is, therefore, by Paul associated with this holiness or sanctification of spirit.

The Spirit of God is frequently denominated in these days, "the Sanctifier." Let it be granted that it is the Spirit that sanctifies or sets apart men to God, still it must be argued from the Record  
        that he sanctifies them only through the truth or gospel believed.
A sanctified unbeliever is inconceivable;
        and, as "without holiness [or sanctification of spirit] no man can see the Lord;
        so, without faith, there can be no holiness, and no action acceptable to God.

All persons sanctified to God to any high office or function, were anointed, and thus consecrated to his special service. So all Christians, being priests, 

        are anointed or sanctified by the Holy Spirit 
        [135] through the obedience of the truth,
        and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus,
        cleansing their consciences from dead works to serve the living God.

K.C.Moser: Here we are on practically undisputed ground. So far as known to me, there is not a religious body, as such, that denies the indwelling of the Spirit in the child of God. Religious scholars are unanimous in the belief. Only recently has this most gracious provision for the good of man been denied by any one. I am thankful that these represent a comparatively small number.

There is little dispute that the Spirit of Mind of Christ dwells in us by the means of the Words of Christ which are Spirit and Live. A literal, direct indwelling is in dispute.

However, there is no scholarship which makes the Spirit OF Christ or the Mind OF Christ into a separate person who continues to lead by supernatural means.

K.C.Moser: But we do not offer what men think as proof of any Bible proposition. If God's word does not teach the indwelling of his Spirit in his children, then we have no interest in the matter; but, on the other hand, if the Bible does assert in unambiguous terms the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Christians, we expect to believe it and teach it regardless of who may deny it. Let us, then, hear what the Scriptures say.

But, we have to define the meaning of the SPIRIT of Christ. The spirit OF a person is never another person.

K.C.Moser: The Fact Of The Indwelling Of The Holy Spirit

The last comforting promise of Christ to his disciples was: "And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." (Matt. 28:20.) The marginal reading gives for "the end of the world" "the consummation of the age." It is indifferent which rendering is preferred, as the consummation of this age will be the end of the world. But the disciples have all long since died. Hence, Christ did not mean that he would be with them personally "unto the end of the world." Christians down through the ages have consistently claimed this promise as applicable to themselves.

Matt. 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matt. 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, 

        baptizing them in the name [singular] of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matt. 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things
        whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo,
        
I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

This means CENI: Peter defined the Prophets by Christ and the prophecies made more perfect as the sole authority for the Church. In 2 Peter 1 Peter left his PART (meros) as a memory. Thereafter, anyone who did not use these two resources as authority for faith and practice would be MARKED as a false teacher.

Peter heard the command and he and the rest of the Bible understood that the NAME Jesus as the Christ of God embodied all of the authority of Father, Son and Spirit:


Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, 
        Repent, and be baptized every one of you
        in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
        and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.


The Spirit was the Spirit OF Christ and not another person. Jesus said My Words are Spirit and Life. When we have our spirit made holy then the Spirit Words of Christ will dwell in our heart (in context)


K.C.Moser: Not only have the disciples all died to whom this promise was first made, but Christ very soon afterwards ascended to the Father and has not personally returned. How, then, can he be with his disciples "always"? He can be with them in the person of the Holy Spirit.

This age or period would end when the apostles had written or had recorded their eye and ear witness testimony as the only way to MARK false teachers who claimed that the Spirit in Person revealed something to them. Jesus of Nazareth whom the One God the Father "made to be both Lord and Christ" died.  He was resurrected and He was changed into His post-resurrection state. As Spirit he said that Father-Son would abide with those who kept His commandements in the same sense that those who keep His commandments abid IN the Father-Son.  In, therefore, does not mean INSIDE OF.

The Eye and Ear witnesses of the post resurrected Jesus were guided into all truth: that leaves nothing for use to reveal. Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:
2Pet. 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound,
        they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2Pet. 1:12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things,
        though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
2Pet. 1:13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle,
        to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
2Pet. 1:14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
2Pet. 1:15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able
    after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

2Pet. 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables,
        when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
        but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

2Pet. 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
        but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
The Scriptures of the PROPHETS clearly defined contains the SPIRIT of the Lord but ONLY to baptized believers. Notice that Peter and Paul define SCRIPTURE as the way a Holy Lord Jeus has chosen for we who are not prophets or apostles.
2Cor. 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face,
        that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
2Cor. 3:14 But their minds were blinded:
        for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away
        in the reading of the old testament;
        which vail is done away in Christ.
We are given A holy spirit able to go boldly before the Throne of God BEYOND the veil where the Word of God is secured in the heavenly Tabernacle.
2Cor. 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
2Cor. 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord,
        the vail shall be taken away.
2Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit:
        and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. [citizenship]
2Cor. 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding
        as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
        are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
        even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
1Pet. 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time
        the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify,
        when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ,
        and the glory that should follow.

Rev. 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him.
        And he said unto me, See thou do it not:
        I am thy fellowservant,
        and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus:
        worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
The Scriptures of the PROPHETS were a sure way to MARK false prophets: the Scriptures of the Apostles is the sure way to MARK false teachers.
2Pet. 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people,
        even as there shall be false teachers among you,
        who privily shall bring in damnable heresies,
        even denying the Lord that bought them,
        and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2Pet. 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways;
        by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2Pet. 2:3 And through covetousness shall they
        with feigned words make merchandise of you:
        whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not,
        and their damnation slumbereth not.
John will say that the NAME of the singular Holy Spirit presence is Jesus Christ the Righteous.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7.)
The "triad" is not God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Instead, the invisible GOD makes himself known under the titles of functions. I have arranged the order in the way the originators of the word TRIAS used it.  That is the FATHER is God in THOUGHT. The Spirit is that which passes from thought to Word or Son.  I believe that in John 12f Jesus makes this clear. 

Theophilus probably first used the word and His account is here.

Tertullian was the next to use the word but both aim to prevent thinking in the usual pagan "family" of gods.

They warn that if we think of SPIRIT as a person we should really think of WISDOM as a daughter. That is because, in the words of Solomon, God's WISDOM comes before His BREATH or WORD.

The Spirit is always the Spirit OF something:

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16

Another means different in some ways, more.  I believe the word means that Jesus in Spirit form would be more available than in the form of a human body. Anyone who devalues the Scriptures has missed the boat because the Bible is spiritual meaning FIGURATIVE from end to end. That is to make certain that we do not allow changing cultures or changing word meanings to be able to ROB the Word of its pictorial images.  The COMFORTER is:

What is the NAME of this "fuller" Comforter?

1Jn.2:1 MY little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate [comforter] with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

What is the NAMEof the Advocate?

So the NAME of Father, Son and Spirit is Jesus Christ which is the image of invisible Deity as far as we have the ability to comprehend.

K.C.Moser: From this passage it is learned that the coming of the Spirit depended on the going away of Christ. Too, the Spirit was to represent Christ and to take his place. Christ said: "I will send him unto you." And the work of the Spirit when he should come related to Christ. "He shall glorify me," said Jesus. The Spirit was likewise the representative of the Father. Though sent by Christ, he was to "proceed from the Father." Hence, the presence of the Spirit with the disciples signifies the presence of God and Christ. Both God and Christ dwell in the saved through the Holy Spirit. (Eph. 2:22.)

Before the day of Pentecost Jesus had to typically take His blood into the heavenly Tabernacle to finish His Work. Then, HE would return in invisible Spirit form to guide the Apostles into all truth.

Jesus said in the Great Commission that ALL authority of Father, Spirit and So were vested in HIM: Jesus Christ.  When Peter baptized he baptized in the NAME singular Jesus Christ and so did others.  

John 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: 
        for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: 
        and he will shew you things to come

John 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
John 16:15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, 
        that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
John 16:16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, 
        and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

So of The Holy Spirit "person" is going to be your Guide it seems that "IT" does not even have his OWN spirit or Mind.

K.C.Moser: The promise of Christ to send the Holy Spirit was fulfilled on the first Pentecost after the resurrection. 

And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them.
        And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
        and began to speak with other tongues,
        as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4.)

When one is filled with the SPIRIT of God they SPEAK: for judgment or instruction.  The promise only tothe apostles who would SEE the power was:

Mark 9:1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. 

When God reveals information He speaks face-to-face.  The Spirit of Christ spoke to the prophets and Christ in Jesus of Nazareth spoke to the apostles--only.  The guidance of the Spirit Christ would speak what the visible Christ had taught them.

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them,
        These are the words which I spake unto you,
        while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled,
        which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Luke 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

He opens understanding by TEACHING:


Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer,
        and to rise from the dead the third day:
Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached
        in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Luke 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
Luke 24:49 And, behold,
        I send the promise of my Father upon you:
        but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high

The Spirit of Christ spoke to His agents, the Prophets and Apostles, in a face-to-face way. He validated both His authority and the authority of the Prophets and Apostles.  Beginning at Pentecost the miracles peformed by the Apostles would be SIGNS of their power and authority.  When that WITNESS and the recording was complete that AGE was finished. There is NO OOTHER WAY to identify the "Draculas" of the religious world claiming authority to suck out the blood of the people.

By definition those who claim the literal indwelling of the Spirit member of the tritheistic Godhead, WILL claim that whatever they say is by the Spirit of Christ.  However, not even Christ IN Christ repudiated what He spoke in person.

Assuredly, one must be VERY OLD if they have the indwelling and are therefore a mouth-to-mouth speaker for God: Miriam got slapped with a dose of  leprosy for such a claim

K.C.Moser: We are quite willing to leave any seeming difficulty with the Lord. Just how the Holy Spirit could dwell in man we may not be able to understand; but we have the Lord's word for it, and that is sufficient.

Now, when the apostles began to preach as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, some of the hearers, being convicted of sin, inquired what they must do to be saved. Peter replied:

Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38.)

Here is promised to those who repent and are baptized the Holy Spirit as a gift. Those who heard Peter speak would most naturally understand the apostle thus. The same apostle shortly afterwards spoke to the same effect, saying:

And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him. (Acts 5:32.)

The spirit of the believers was an UNholy spirit. Baptism was for the remission of sins. Therefore, when God cleansed THEIR spirit then it was A holy spirit.  In 1 Peter 3:21 the same Peter called it A good conscience.  Walter Scott and others recognized that the witness will EXCLUDE those who ignorantly or for commercial reasons CLAIM that the Holy Spirit told them to do something:

"Again--Some will say, What does the expression Holy Spirit mean? Well, in scripture it stands first for God the Holy Spirit, and secondly for the holy mind or spirit of a believer--for illustration, take Peter's words to Ananias, "Why has Satan tempted you to lie to the Holy Spirit; you have not lied to men, but to God," (the Holy Spirit.) And the Saviour says, How much more will your heavenly Father give a holy spirit (as it should be translated) to those that ask him. Again--Praying in a holy spirit. Again--Paul says he approved himself God's servant "by knowledge, by long sufferings, by kindness, by a holy spirit'" by a mind innocent of the love of gain, or commerce, or sensuality.

"Now then the expression stands for both God the Holy Spirit, and for a believer's spirit made holy by him

K.C.Moser: Concerning the words, "the gift of the Holy Spirit," J. W. McGarvey, in his commentary on Acts, says: "The expression means the Holy Spirit as a gift; and the reference is to that indwelling of the Holy Spirit by which we bring forth the fruits of the Spirit, and without which we are not of Christ." This is a sensible exegesis of the words of the apostle.

The Spirit OF God is the Mind of God Who IS Spirit. Paul equates the Holy Spirit to the Mind of Christ in 1 Corinthians 2. True to form K.C.Moser ignores the context.

J.W.McGarvey, Indwelling: The apostle Peter, in his sermon at the great Pentecost, promised his hearers the gift of the Holy Spirit on the condition that they would repent and be baptized; and he added, "The promise is to you and your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call to him." This is a universal promise to Christians of every age and every country; consequently,

the gift referred to cannot be any of the miraculous gifts bestowed in the apostolic age alone, and on a few persons in that age;

but a gift which is not miraculous, and which is not limited by time or place.

From that golden and crimson fruit I can trade back the sap through twig and limb, and stock a root, into the ground; and I can say that in some way the [11] connection is maintained through the sap; but the ultimate connection between the cause and the effect is hidden from my view in the depths of that mystery which is called life.

In like manner I find, by revelation and experience,
that the
chief medium through which the Spirit that dwells in my body produces its fruit, is the word of God;

but the method by which the Spirit's power is brought to bear through this medium is as inscrutable as the Holy Spirit himself.

I can, and do, believe the fact, but I cannot know the process. I know, also, that in order to this fruit-bearing, I must coöperate with the Holy Spirit by an active exertion of my own will in the direction of love, joy, peace, etc., and that when I enjoy these blessed frames of mind, I am enjoying them in fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

I can, and do, believe the fact, but I cannot know the process. I know, also, that in order to this fruit-bearing, I must coöperate with the Holy Spirit by an active exertion of my own will in the direction of love, joy, peace, etc., and that when I enjoy these blessed frames of mind, I am enjoying them in fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

However, McGarvey on the Witness of the Holy Spirit does not support K.C.Moser or any of his disciples.

If God Himself told us first hand that we were His children then how could there ever be any doubt? McGarvey notes that:

"Even the preacher, of whom I spoke as addressing some young converts, had, just before that speech, made them all believe that they had the witness of the Holy Spirit itself, bearing witness with their spirits that they were children of God.

"Yet he was then telling them that they would be certain, in many future days, to doubt this testimony of the Spirit.

What was the trouble with the man? Could he and his young converts really doubt what the Spirit of God would testify to? I suppose not. And yet, they are full of doubt while dwelling upon and relying upon the very passage of Scripture which gave the apostles their unwavering confidence. What clearer proof could we possibly have that their understanding of the passage is different from that held by the apostles.

"When they have experienced some emotional feeling they are told that this is the "result of a direct impact of the Holy Spirit upon their spirits, and which they understand as the testimony which the Holy Spirit bears to them that they are children of God. But the trouble is, that they can never be altogether certain that it was the Holy Spirit which they felt. from such uncertainty, and lead us into the clear light that shone upon the path of the early disciples!

The apostles had heard Jesus testify; but he had not told them all the truth; nor could they, with certainty, remember all that he had said. It was left for the Spirit to bring to memory all that Jesus had spoken, and to lead them into all the truth.

"Upon the Spirit, then, they depended for all their knowledge of the will of God. If they wished to know what constitutes one a child of God, they learned it from the testimony of the Spirit. They had no other way to learn it, and no other way was needed, for this was infallible.

"What they learned thus, they spoke with equal infallibility to the world. "God has revealed these things to us through his Spirit," says Paul; "which things we also speak; not in words which man's wisdom teaches, but in words which the Holy Spirit teaches."

The Second Level of Witness of the Spirit

On a secondary level, everyone who heard the Apostles speak heard just what Jesus the Spirit had already revealed and would continue to reveal:

"Others, then, heard the testimony of the Spirit through the lips of those inspired men, and in this they heard the very words of the Spirit. These words, again, were written down, so that those who had not the opportunity of hearing the living voice of the apostles might have the same words in writing, and suffer no disadvantage, as compared with those who first heard them. We stand in the position of this last class. We have no testimony of the Spirit by inspiration of our own minds, neither have we the living voice of inspired men to inform us; but we have, what is just equal to this in value, the written depositions of the Spirit of God; and these testify, in unmistakable terms, what a man must do to be a child of God.

K.C.Moser:  The Epistles to the churches abound with references to the indwelling Spirit. We are not here concerned about the miraculous measure of the Spirit given to the apostles and some others. Here we are discussing the Spirit as a gift to Christians of all ages since the church began and that is to continue to the end of time. It is not necessary to cite every passage that says the Spirit dwells in the hearts of the saved. A sufficient number, however, will be given.

We have looked at most of the passages: the Spirit dwells in us can be repeated a thousand times but tis never identifies a THIRD MEMBER of the "family of gods."  Spirit is neuter: a personal pronoun was common is speaking of qualities such as Grace which teaches you.  However the Spirit OF Christ is the Mind of Christ (1 Cor 2) and that SPIRIT says Jesus Christ is His Words because they contain the mind or spirit of the person.

But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (Rom. 8:9-11.)
Jesus told the Apostles that He had been speaking in proverbs or parables: He always spoke to the Jewish clergy in parables to hide the mysteries from the merchantile class.  He called the Pharisees and Scribes hypocrites by identifying speakers, singers and instrument players.  And yet the "holy spirit" tells some preachers to lie about all of the "music" words in the Bible.a

It should be simple simon clear that Paul was not speaking of NOT being INSIDE OF the flesh.  Paul was still inside of HIS body but his carnal nature was not the RULER.  It was PAUL'S spirit in which he dwelled WHEN he devoted himself to the Word of God.  The Spirit OF God is the Spirit OF Christ which is their MIND delivered in the LETTER written on paper.  The SPIRIT means that they UNDERSTOOD te written text.

If Paul was INSIDE of the Spirit when the Spirit was INSIDE of him then we understand that Paul also wrote to fool the foolish.

K.C.Moser:
In the first place, note carefully the words of the apostle, "the Spirit of God dwelleth in you." It is impossible to make a plainer statement or one more positive. If this affirmation from one of God's apostles does not prove unequivocally the indwelling of the Spirit in Christians, it is vain to attempt to prove anything by the Bible. Not to believe exactly what the apostle said savors more of unbelief than anything else. The proposition might rest on this one statement and be abundantly proved, but more shall be given.

Remember prepositional phrases? The Spirit OF God is the Spirit OF Christ is the MIND of Christ.

K.C.Moser:Note the importance of the indwelling of the Spirit. Those in the flesh have not the Spirit, while those in the Spirit possess him. And then follows a statement that should stop all denial of the Spirit's presence in the hearts of the saved: "But if any man hath not the Spirit OF Christ, he is none of his." If, therefore, I prove that the Spirit does not dwell in me, I have at the same time demonstrated the fact of my condemnation.

But the Spirit OF a person is NOT another person: the Spirit OF Christ is the Spirit OF God is the MIND of God: trying to have the Spirit OF Christ live literally in your carnal body without haveing the LITERAL CHRIST live INSIDE of you would be to SEVER the Spirit OF Christ from Christ Himself.  There are no classical trinitariarians who would not hurt you really bad for such delusional thinking out loud.

K.C.Moser:Not only is the Spirit's presence a proof of sonship, it is a pledge of a resurrection to immortality. By the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead we shall be raised. But this is the Spirit "that dwelleth in you," said Paul to the Roman Christians. Let us hear Paul again:

Know ye not that ye are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (1 Cor. 3:16.)

Here again is the plain statement, "the Spirit of God dwelleth in you." I repeat: Language cannot be plainer or more positive. If any one is disposed to deny that the apostle meant just what he said--namely, that the Spirit of God dwells in his children--let him suggest how the apostle would have done so. We also learn from this Scripture that being a temple of God depends on the Spirit's indwelling. Paul twice asserts that the Spirit had his home in the Corinthian Christians.

Or know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God? (1 Cor. 6:19.)

McGarvey: The connection which subsists between the Spirit dwelling in my body and this fruit in my life is not a matter of revelation. I may incidentally learn something of it, as I learn something of the connection between vegetable life in the tree, and the fruit which ripens on the extremities of its tender twigs. K.C.Moser:This he said reproving them for immorality. A recognition of the presence of the Spirit is one of the very strongest incentives to holiness.

And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father. (Gal. 4:6.)

Here it is learned that the possession of the Spirit is a peculiar privilege of sonship. Note again the unambiguous assertion, "God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts." This is too plain to need comment. But let us hear from other writers.

Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? (James 4:5.)

Moffatt translates the passage thus:

What, do you consider this is an idle word of scripture?--"He yearns jealously for the spirit he sets within us."

And the spiritual John has something to say on the subject:

And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us. (1 John 3:24.)Hereby we know that we abide in him and he in us, because be hath given us of his Spirit. (1 John 4:13.)

If there is a fact upon which the Bible has spoken more plainly than the fact of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in God's children, I know nothing of it. That God's word has said the Spirit dwells in Christians cannot be denied. It is now up to those who deny the indwelling of the Spirit to show that God did not mean just what he said. If God has qualified these statements in such a way that they cannot be interpreted to mean what they assert, let it be shown.

Of the objections that have been offered to the personal indwelling of the Spirit, the following are the weightiest: Jesus said: "The words I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life." (See John 6:63.) 

That becomes simple when we grasp that SPIRIT never speaks of a "being" unless you are possessed by demons. This is a word used to define the invisible power of God or the inaudible Word of God made audible through the Word Jesus Christ:

[1]LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the [1] breath of his mouth.

Promised: As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord;
...........My SPIRIT that is UPON thee, and
.......... my WORDS which I have put in thy mouth, [Note the parallelism] Isa 59:21A

I will pour out my SPIRIT that unto you,
........I will make known my WORDS which unto you.

Fulfilled:

It is the SPIRIT that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:
the WORDS that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. [A holy spirit or A good conscience]

MARKED BY THE EKKLESIA OR SYNAGOGUE AS SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE.

.......... nor out of the mouth of thy seed,
l..........nor out of the mouth of thy seeds seed,
.......... saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Isa 59:21B

It is argued that the Scriptures mean the word dwells in us when they say, "the Spirit of God dwelleth in you." Let those who believe so turn and read the Scriptures that have been cited, substituting "word" for "Spirit." Let us try just one here:

And because ye are sons, God sent forth the word of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

McGarvey proves

The whole matter of the Spirit's testimony resolves itself into this:

that the Holy Spirit, through the Scriptures, testifies that men who pass through certain changes, and maintain, afterward, a certain character, are children of God.

Whatever may be men's theories of spiritual influence, you will find no believer in the inspiration of the Scriptures who will deny that the Spirit does thus testify, or who will affirm that he communicates ideas on this subject in any other way.

In respect to our own spirit's testimony, especially, have our friends of the religious parties generally misunderstood this passage of Scripture. They understand the text as if it read:

"The Spirit itself bears witness to our spirit that we are children of God." This would make but one witness, the Holy Spirit.

But Paul has two witnesses, for he says: "The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit." This is an exact translation of the Greek.

Now, when I testify to my brother, there is but one witness; but when I testify with him, he and I are both witnesses, and my testimony agrees with his. This is just Paul's idea. The Holy Spirit itself bears testimony which agrees with the testimony of our own spirit, that we are children of God. The point of agreement is just this,

that the character which the Holy Spirit asserts to be that of a child of God, agrees with what my own spirit asserts to be my own character.

Perhaps some one is ready to object, just here, that it is rather a strange mode of speech, for a man to represent his own spirit as being a witness to himself. But this is not the only passage in which Paul speaks in this way. When speaking of the unbelief of Israel, in the ninth of Romans, he uses this language:

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart." Romans 9:1-2

In the Greek we have here the same verb as in our text, so that, more exactly translated, it would read,

"my conscience also bearing witness with me." Here are two witnesses,

  1. himself in the aggregate testifying to the brethren,
  2. and his conscience,

which does not in every man agree with the spoken words, asserting within him the same thing.

We now have the subject sufficiently before us, to begin to feel the solid ground beneath our feet.

When the Holy Spirit testified to Paul what character God would adopt as a child, he could not doubt it;

and when he honestly inquired of his own spirit what his own character was, he could not doubt the answer that was given.

When these two characters agree, to doubt that you are a child of God is to doubt either your own consciousness, or the words of the Holy Spirit.

K.C.Moser:In the first place, the "word" is not capable of crying: "Abba, Father." In the next place, one has to receive the word in order to be made sons, unless the doctrine of Calvinism is right. And in the third place, nothing prevented the apostle from using "word" instead of "Spirit" if that had been what he wanted to say. Now, Jesus said his words are "life" as well as "spirit." Try substituting "life" for "Spirit" in the above passage and see whether it makes sense.

The text reads the Spirit OF sonship: nothing stopped from using "sent The Holy Spirit." 

Again, it is urged that the Scriptures say that both God and Christ dwell in us also. Yes, this is true; but the Scriptures just as surely say how God and Christ dwell in us. God and Christ dwell in us through the Holy Spirit. He is their representative. Christ said of the Spirit, "I will send him unto you." He also said of the Spirit, "He shall glorify me." Thus the Spirit came to represent Christ. But Jesus also said the Spirit would be sent by him "from the Father," and that he "proceedeth from the Father." Paul calls the Holy Spirit the "Spirit of God" and the "Spirit of Christ" in the same verse. (Rom. 8:9.)

And then in the following verse, instead of saying the Spirit dwells in us,
        Paul said, "and if Christ is in you."
        Christ was in the Roman Christians by the Spirit.

Again, Paul wrote to the Corinthians, saying, "ye are a temple of God." Now, God's temple is his dwelling place. But does God inhabit his temple personally, or through a representative? Paul immediately adds, "and . . . the Spirit of God dwelleth in you." Thus God dwells in his temple through the Spirit. Now, what is necessarily implied in these verses is plainly stated by the apostle in another place:

In whom ye also are builded together for a habitation of God in the Spirit. (Eph. 2:22.)

Now, if the Bible explained that the Spirit dwells in us through the word, the matter would be very different; but no such explanation is made. Read 1 John 3:24 and 1 John 4:13 for further proof that God dwells in us through the Spirit.

The Word and Spirit are often used as parallel: that is because Jesus said my WORDS are Spirit and Life. Spirit never defines a person other than throuh a figure of speech.  

The Word is said to have indwelled in the same sense as the Spirit: word is spirit.

THE elder unto the elect lady and her children,
        whom I love in the truth; and not I only,
        but also all they that have known the truth; 2 John 1:1

For the truths sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. 2 John 1:2

Jesus taught His Word and would bring that word to their memory: they would write it down and thus Jesus speaks "directly" to us. To deny that the Word of Jesus Christ the Spirit Comforter is to despise both the writer and His eternal message.  Was He not capable of supplying us with all that applies to life and godliness.

John 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, 
        that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
John 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them,
        because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world,
        but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
John 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
God always leaves some marks. Peter said that he heard Jesus face to face and had His Words validated by supernatural miracles.  If some preacher hallucinates or has a gas pain and claims that the "spirit" is leading him then he needs to prove that he is a prophet or apostle:
Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Luke 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words,
        of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory,
        and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.
Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not,
        I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,
        hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken,
        the same shall judge him in the last day.
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me,
        he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him,
        and make our abode with him.
Jesus bestows His Mind or His Spirit only by the Word unless people have something other than the 5 gift of senses God created to make communication possible. Paul said that he ministered spirit by preaching and others received spirit by hearing; 

He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you,
doeth he it by the works of the law,
or by the hearing of faith? Gal 3:5

The Holy Spirit is the MIND of Christ (1 Cor 2). The Spirit of CHRIST as the ONLY spirit from eternity. We know WHERE that MENTAL DISPOSITION dwells while OUR OWN SPIRITS live in our bodies.

Eph 3:16 That he would grant you,
according to the riches of his glory,
to be strengthened with might
by his Spirit in the inner man;

God's MIND or SPIRIT dwells in OUR Spirit or inner man: but only those BAPTIZED to request A good conscience or A holy spirfit.

Eph 3:17 That
        [1] Christ may dwell [2] in your hearts [2] by faith;
        that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

K.C.Moser: But it is further objected that the Holy Spirit is a person, as much so as God or Christ, and that it is impossible for him personally to dwell in us. Now, let this objection be directed toward God and not man. It was God who said through inspired men, "The Spirit of God dwelleth in you." But God has already answered those who take issue with him: "Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God?" "Is anything too hard for Jehovah?" Man has always stumbled over the promises of God. Solomon wondered how God was going to keep his promise to dwell in an earthly temple made with hands.

But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heaven, cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded! (1 Kings 8:27.)

But God kept his promise in spite of the apparent difficulty. He kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah when it seemed humanly impossible to do so. Let God promise and let man believe.

Now that the fact of the indwelling of the Spirit has been proved beyond any reasonable doubt, let us turn to the study of

There is only ONE GOD and CHRIST is that God.  God is made known as Father, Son and Spirit which classical trinitarians equated to Thought, Word and Breath as does Scripture.

Phil 2:5 Your attitude [mind] should be the kind that was shown us by Jesus Christ,
Phil 2:6 who, though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God,
Phil 2:7 but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men.

The MIND that was in Christ who WAS God is the word:

MInd is: G5426 phroneo fron-eh'-o From G5424 ; to exercise the mind, that is, entertain or have a sentiment or opinion; by implication to be (mentally) disposed (more or less earnestly in a certain direction); intensively to interest oneself in (with concern or obedience):set the affection on, (be) care (-ful), (be like-, + be of

In the so-called baptismal formula ALL authority is vested in the name (singular): Jesus as the Christ of God embodied Father, Son and Spirit. That is why Peter baptized in the NAME of Jesus Christ.

The Function Of The Indwelling Spirit

K.C.Moser:  Some have assumed that if the Spirit should dwell in man he would have nothing to do. We shall see that the Spirit has a work to do, and that this work is sufficient to keep him well employed. There is no unemployment problem with the Holy Spirit.

When Paul contrast Law and Spirit he is repudiating the Law of Moses which was added because of transgression: musical idolatry of the trinity.  God gave them The Law of Moses to regulate their Civil lives and protect the weak from the strong Civil-Military-Clergy complex under the sacrificial system. Most Jews attended synagogue or church in the wilderness in contrast to these Jews who tried to prevent the Gentiles from baptism until they were circumsized and kept the Law of Moses. Paul had to tell them that the LAW had not prevented them from falling from grace by profaning the rest day with musical idolatry.  This has nothing to do with individuals obeying the coommands of Jesus Christ which is the DRIVEN PURPOSE of Christ putting His Spirit or Mind into us by ministering the spirit through preaching and teaching.

Hos. 2:11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease,
        her feast days,
        her new moons,
        and her sabbaths,
        and all her solemn feasts.

Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers,
he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

 
Col. 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you
        in meat,
        or in drink,
        or in respect of an holyday,
        or of the new moon,
        or of the sabbath days:
Col. 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

A shadow is NOT God's old, failed plan of salvation: the Law including the Sabbaths were imposed BECAUSE of transgression to PREVENT people from going to pagan worship services on the Sabbath considered an evil day.

A Shadow is something truly Evil:

The only used Paul made of the Sabbath was to go teach the Word in the synagogues which was NOT a worship center and had no "praise service" which is distinctly legalistic and pagan.

Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

K.C.Moser: Let us first note why the Spirit is needed by man. The fundamental weakness of man is the "law of sin" within him. This law refuses to permit man to obey God as he should. I speak particularly of the unsaved man. His struggle because of this law of sin within him is graphically set forth by the apostle Paul in the seventh chapter of Romans. The apostle considers himself an unregenerate man under the law, with the obligation to live perfectly or be damned. 

PAUL WAS PROPHET--LITERATE AND THEREFORE CHRIST--LITERATE:

The WRITTEN WORDS of the LIVING WORD is the GIFT of A holy spirit from Christ's Spirit to Our Spirit.
Rejecting that is one unforgiveable sin because it speaks against the SPIRIT or MIND of Christ (Heb 6)
Grace is the TEACHING and POWER to conform to the commands of God.
The only reason we need A holy or sanctified spirit as the temple of God is that His WORD will STICK there.

K.C.Moser: Hear him: 

I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? (Rom. 7:21-24.)

Paul tells us that he tried to overcome this "law of sin" by the force of his will power, but failed miserably. Hence, he found himself a helpless victim crying for mercy. This is man under the law. But with the eighth chapter the curtain rises upon a brighter scene. Hear the apostle:

There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. (Rom. 8:1, 2.)

PAUL COULD NOT FULFIL GOD'S LAWS WITHOUT A HOLY SPIRIT

Paul's conflict is between HIS SPIRIT and HIS FLESH.

FIRST VERSION:

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then
........with the MIND I myself serve the law of God;
........but with the FLESH the law of sin. Rom 7:25

But the story does not end there:

Rom 8:1 THERE is therefore now no condemnation to them
........ which are in Christ Jesus,
........ who walk not after the flesh, [human]
........ but after the Spirit[human]

Gal. 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Rom 8:2 For the law of the
........ Spirit OF life in Christ Jesus [we are baptized into Christ]
........ hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [and free from the crooked generation]

K.C.Moser: The "law of sin and of death" was the "law of sin" which he had just spoken of in the seventh chapter that kept him a slave under sin. The "law of the Spirit of life" is the opposite of this "law of sin" and the source of his deliverance from "the body of this death." The "law of the Spirit" is not, therefore, a law, or code, given by the Spirit, just as the "law of sin" is not a law given by sin. The "law of sin" was a principle of evil that overcame every determination to do right. Under Christ this "law of sin," called elsewhere by the same apostle the "old man," is overcome by a principle of life given by the Spirit. It then becomes the work of the indwelling Spirit to keep this "old man" under subjection so that the child of God can successfully serve him. Hence, we read from the apostle in the same connection:

So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh: for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Rom. 8:12-14.)

By means of the indwelling Spirit, then, the deeds of the body are put to death. It is necessary to note that everything here said of the Spirit is asserted of the "Spirit of God [that] dwelleth in you." (Verse 9.) The "mind of the flesh" is overcome, and, by means of the Spirit, the child of God possesses the "mind of the Spirit." The Spirit and the flesh can never compromise. There is an eternal warfare.

But I say, Walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are contrary the one to the other; that ye may not do the things that ye would. But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (Gal. 5:16-18.)

Isn't that clear to any one who has read any of the contemporaneous literature that the spirit OF LIFE is NOT a separated person. That is because SPIRIT means MIND and both Hebrew and Greek and dozens of passages identify that is the MENTAL DISPOSITION of God.

Phil. 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Phil. 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Rom 8:3 For what THE LAW could not do, in that it was weak through THE FLESH,

Turn means converted means to be baptized.

The prophecy fulfilled and the DAMNATION for those who fight against Jesus Christ and therefore blaspheme.

        but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Luke 7:29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans,
        justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

        rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

SECOND VERSION

K.C.Moser: Under the law, man was not given the Spirit to help in his fight against sin. This is learned from the last sentence in the above passage. If those who are led by the Spirit are not under the law, then those under the law are not led by the Spirit. Indeed, Paul developed this point in the third chapter of Galatians, showing that the fact of the indwelling Spirit proved that the Galatians were freed from the law and should not be going back under its bondage. The conflict between the flesh and Spirit is the conflict that goes on within man. The indwelling Spirit is what is here contemplated. The apostle had just written in the fourth chapter:

THERE ARE TWO TREADS: THE CIVIL-MILITARY-CLERGY COMPLEX ABANDONED TO WORSHIP THE STARRY HOST.

The Law of Moses regulated the national (Goyim) or pagan-identical system: when the elders fired God and demanded a king like the nations God knew that they wanted to worship like the nations. The curse of the kings was that they would lie, rob and confiscate the property of people including the young males to make and blow instruments before the warrior's charriots. God abandoned them and warned that He would not save them from captivity and death.

The SPIRITUAL thread involved the Spirit of Christ Who ordained the synagogue dedicated to the SPIRIT: Rest, reading and rehearsing the Word of God.  Vocal or instrumental rejoicing was outlawed because that was destructive. This quarantined all of those not of the tribe of levi from the sacrificial system.  Because the Word is defined by Jesus Christ as the Spirit, and because the Spirit instructed through the elders, the SPIRIT was fully available to the SPIRITUAL THREAD called church.

K.C.Moser:

And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father. (Gal. 4:6.)

So, then, the Spirit overcomes the flesh and enables man to bring forth the "fruit of the Spirit." (Gal. 5:22, 23.) Then the apostle adds:

And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof. (Verse 24.)

The flesh is crucified by means of the Spirit, since the conflict that gave the victory was between the flesh and the Spirit. Here, then, is plenty of work for "the Spirit of God that dwelleth in you."

One of the noted things of historical scholarship is that Paul never uses THE HOLY SPIRIT in the sense of a SEPARATED being: the Spirit's NAME is Jesus Christ the Righteous. The Spirit OF Christ is the Spirit OF God and there is only ONE spirit or MIND for the ONE God. In Romans 7f it is the spirit OF Paul in conflict withe the flesh OF Paul . The Spirit who inspired the Prophets was the Spirit OF Christ.

If you read whole chapters in a gulp you will see that Paul is discussing HIS flesh in contrast to HIS SPIRIT. That personal spirit was made into A holy spirit or A good conscience ONLY at the time and place of baptism.

Paul speaks of HIS spirit, the spirit OF God and the spirit OF Christ. THE HOLY SPIRIT as a member of a POLYTHEISTIC triad is from paganism and philosophy.

K.C.Moser: The relation of the Spirit to the law is made by the apostle a very important matter. He teaches that to be under the law is to be a victim of the "law of sin" and without the Spirit. When man is freed from the law, he is given the Spirit to enable him to crucify the lust of the flesh. It was necessary, then, to be freed from the law in order to be freed from sin. Hence, the apostle wrote:

For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under law, but under grace. (Rom. 6:14.)

What is A holy spirit? A holy spirit is OUR spirit made holy when our "sins are washed away" from our UN holy spirit. The same Peter called it A good conscience.  The gift is of A holy spirit which is the MIND of Christ and not another person.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mk 16:15

THE WORD OF CHRIST THE SPIRIT IS SPIRIT: again look at the promise.

Paul said that until we are CONVERTED we will not be able to CONFESS Christ with A holy spirit or A good conscience which permits us to read BLACK text on white paper. Those will die in their sins unless they OBEY THE GOSPEL which demands active participation in yielding.   

WHAT shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? Rom 6:1
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Rom 6:2
Know ye not, that so many of us
        as were baptized into Jesus Christ
were baptized into his death? Rom 6:3

That DID NOT HAPPEN when Jesus enacted the PROTO Gospel.

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:

that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6:4

For if we have been planted together

in the likeness of his death,
we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Rom 6:5

How and when are we crucified and have out SIN CUT OFF?

Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Personal faith has NO POWER unless it COMPLIES to accept THE FAITH.

Col 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey;

whether of sin unto death, or [sin IN ORDER TO death]
of
obedience unto righteousness? Rom 6:16 [obedience IN ORDER TO righteousness]

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,

OBEDIENCE: but ye have obeyed from the heart
that form of doctrine which was delivered you
. Rom 6:17

PRODUCES: Being then made free from sin,

servants of righteousness. Rom 6:18

K.C.Moser: While under the law, sin did have dominion over man, as Paul shows in the seventh chapter of Romans, already referred to. This was so because man of himself did not have the power to overcome the "law of sin" which was in his members. This is done by means of the Spirit; for it is "by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body." But the Spirit was not given under the law; hence, to be under law was to be under the dominion of sin. For further proof of this statement note the following parallel passages:

 Walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (Gal. 5:16.)
But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (Verse 18.)
Again, Paul is discussing the conflict between HIS flesh and HIS spirit or mind. Otherwise this verse would make no sense.

K.C.Moser: To be under the law, then, was to fulfill the lust of the flesh. Those familiar with the argument of the Roman and Galatian Epistles know that Paul keeps this fact prominently before his readers. Indeed, this was one of his main arguments to show his readers their folly of leaving grace for law.

Now, if I deny that I have the Holy Spirit dwelling within me, I logically leave grace for law. It is significant that most of those who deny the indwelling of the Holy Spirit are legalists and teach salvation by works. Such belong under law. Let them know that they are not under an administration of law, but of grace, as has been shown elsewhere. Let them leave "the spirit of bondage again unto fear," and accept the "Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father,"

Jesus said MY Words are Spirit and Life: we have noted both the prophecy and fulfilment to prove that the SPIRIT of Christ is delivered through His WORDS.  John 14f shows that conditioned on KEEPING CHRIST'S COMMANDMENTS both Father and Son will dwell in the believer while the believer dwells IN the Father and Son.  Therefore, we conclude that IN does not means INSIDE and Spirit does not mean "a little person." To reject the Spirit-Word connection is to blaspheme the Spirit which came to Jesus as the Son from the Father Whom he said DWELLED in Him. That is why ALL classical trinitarinas define the Father as the THOUGHT, the Spirit as th BREATH and the Son as the Articulated Words.

Grace is another name for Christ as the Word: note the personification of Christ as Grace who came to free us from The Law of Moses and not obeying the commands of Christ:

Grace and peace (fruits) be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 2Pe 1:2

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 2Pe 1:3

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2Pe 1:4

K.C.Moser: In fairness to some let it be said that while denying the personal indwelling of the Spirit they do believe that he dwells in the Christian. Just how or in what sense seems not easy for them to explain. With me, to assert the indwelling of the Spirit is to assert the personal indwelling. I am unable to understand how the Spirit can accomplish what he is said to accomplish and not dwell personally in the Christian. For example, within man is a warfare between right and wrong. (Gal. 5:17.) But this warfare is between the "law of sin" which is in our members and the Holy Spirit "which dwelleth in you." Now, if the Spirit does not personally dwell in man, how can the warfare be located within him? This struggle would then, of necessity, be external as to man.

The conflict is between PAUL'S flesh and PAUL'S spirit or Mind.  No historical trinitarian taught that the spirit OF Christ was separated FROM Christ to Whom it belongs.  The Restoration leaders aggred with the prophecies and fulfillment we have quoted above: the Spirit OF Christ is the WORD of Christ. Therefore, most Restoration scholars and followers believed that the Spirit dwells in a believer when the WORD dwells in them.

K.C.Moser: If the Spirit does not dwell personally in the Christian, then he dwells in him only in the sense of exercising an influence upon him, as, for example, through the Scriptures. If this be conceded, how can the Spirit be a possession peculiar to the Christian, seeing the sinner also is influenced by the word of God? But Paul says: "Because ye are sons" the Spirit is sent "into our hearts." Why would not the Spirit as truly dwell in the hearts of men before sonship?

John who recorded Jesus promising "another" Comforter said that that Holy Spirit would be Jesus Christ the Righteous.  Jesus warned about "proverbs" in John 16 and said that to the extend people keep His commandments the Father and Son would dwell in them and the believer would dwell IN the Father and Son.  Therefore, there is no literal member of the "God family" who literally dwells in our carnal flesh.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Jn 14:18

MY little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin,
.......... we have an advocate with the Father,
...........Jesus Christ the righteous: 1 John 2:1

Parakletos (g3875) par-ak'-lay-tos; an intercessor, consoler: - advocate, comforter.

No one ever claims that they have the literal PERSON called The Holy Spirit living inside of them who does not intend to CHANGE the Word of God to permit changes in the "worship styles." There is always a mercinary component. Most Bible scholard make the same claim.

Martin Luther:

5. Inasmuch as his activity among them is his testimonial, and they themselves are aware that through his ministerial office he has constituted them a church, he calls them an epistle written by himself; not with ink and in paragraphs, not on paper or wood, nor engraved upon hard rock as the Ten Commandments written upon tables of stone, which Moses placed before the people, but written by the Holy Spirit upon fleshly tables--hearts of tender flesh.

The Spirit is the ink or the inscription, yes, even the writer himself;
but the
pencil or pen and the hand of the writer is the ministry of Paul.

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you,
        that ye should not
obey the truth, before whose eyes
        Jesus Christ hath been
        evidently set forth, crucified among you? Galatians 3:1

This only would I learn of you,
        Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law,
        or (Received ye the Spirit) by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:2

6. This figure of a written epistle is, however, in accord with Scripture usage. Moses commands (Deut 6:6-9; 11, 18) that the Israelites write the Ten Commandments in all places where they walked or stood upon the posts of their houses,

and upon their gates, and ever have them before their eyes and in their hearts.

Again (Prov 7:2-3), Solomon [PAGE 226] says: "Keep my commandments and...my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them upon thy fingers; write them upon the tablet of thy heart."

He speaks as a father to his child when giving the child an earnest charge to remember a certain thing--"Dear child, remember this; forget it not; keep it in thy heart." Likewise, God says in the book of Jeremiah the prophet (ch. 31, 33), "I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it."

Here man's heart is represented as a sheet, or slate, or page,
        whereon is written
the preached Word;
        for the heart is to receive and securely keep the
Word.

In this sense Paul says: "We have, by our ministry, written a booklet or letter upon your heart, which witnesses that you believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and have the assurance that through Christ you are redeemed and saved. This testimony is what is written on your heart.
        The letters are not characters traced with ink or crayon,
        but the
living thoughts, the fire and force of the heart.

7. Note further, that it is his ministry to which Paul ascribes the preparation of their heart thereon and the inscription which constitutes them "living epistles of Christ."

He contrasts his ministry with the blind fancies of those fanatics who seek to receive,
        and dream of having, the Holy Spirit without the oral word
;

who, perchance, creep into a corner and grasp the Spirit through dreams, directing the people away from the preached Word and visible ministry.

8. These words are blows and thrusts for the false apostles [PAGE 227] and preachers. Paul is mortal enemy to the blockheads who make great boast,

pretending to what they do not possess and to what they cannot do;
who boast of having the Spirit in great measure; who are ready to counsel and aid the whole world;
who pride themselves on the ability to
invent something new. It is to be a surpassingly precious and heavenly thing they are to spin out of their heads, as the dreams of pope and monks have been in time past.

"We do not so," says Paul. "We rely not upon ourselves or our wisdom and ability. We preach not what we have ourselves invented. But this is our boast and trust in Christ before God,

that we have made of you a divine epistle; have written upon your hearts,
not our thoughts, but the Word of God.

K.C.Moser: Again, the Spirit is given the Christian as an earnest. An earnest must actually be possessed. Hence, the Spirit himself must be the actual possession of the saved. How can this be except he dwell with man personally? An earnest is more than an influence.

Did not the Spirit dwell personally in the apostles? And did not evil spirits actually dwell in man? Did not Christ cast them "out"? Was there not, in some cases, physical pain when the evil spirits departed? Did evil spirits dwell in man through Satan's word? Did they thus operate on swine? (Matt. 8:28-32.) Why think it a thing incredible that the Holy Spirit should inhabit the Christian heart?

The "Dove" as the symbol of the Father recognizing a SON instead of a Mother recognizing a DAUGHTER, rested ON Jesus Christ. There is no example of a "person" moving into another "person": the Spirit is always the Spirit OF some mental quality.  The Spirit Who called Himself "Jesus of Nazareth" promised to APPEAR to Paul the Apostle as He needed further information.

"The Fruit Of The Spirit"

K.C.Moser: We have seen how the Spirit crucifies lust. But the work of the Spirit is not wholly negative; it produces fruits of righteousness. Hear the apostle Paul:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self-control. (Gal. 5:22, 23.)

In designating the Spirit as the source of these graces, the apostle does not mean to separate the fruit of the Spirit from the person's effort in whom the Spirit dwells. The person being influenced by the Spirit brings forth these graces. They are the work of both man and the Spirit, but primarily of the Spirit, because he incites them. Of course, one is not to understand that the above graces, and these alone, are the fruit of the Spirit. The apostle means to ascribe all righteousness to the Spirit as the source. Just as the "law of sin" was the source of all sin in the sinner, so is the Spirit the source of all righteousness in the Christian.

The "another Comforter" as the Holy Spirit is said by the same John to be "Jesus Christ the Righteous." Therefore, the fruit of the Spirit OF Christ is the Spirit OF Christ.  Jesus Christ does not literally live inside of our mortal bodies and therefore another person separated from Jesus Christ does not live inside of our bodies.

K.C.Moser: Other Scriptures ascribe these graces to the Spirit. Paul writes in Rom. 5:5 that "the love of God hath been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given unto us." And again in the same book (Rom. 14:17) a list of graces are ascribed to the Spirit: "For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." Goodspeed translates the passage thus: "The kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of uprightness, peace, and happiness through the possession of the Holy Spirit."

Rom. 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; 
        because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts
        by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Rom. 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom. 5:7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die:
        yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom. 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us,
        in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us

All of the Works of Jesus Christ are through His Word: this is the only way to MARK those who hallucinate that their impulse to lie is the work of the Spirit. All such people self destruct in time.

Because the Spirit of Christ or the Holy Spirit Comforter is "Jesus Christ the righteousness" the fruit of the Spirit is the fruit of Christ.  

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Jn 15:3

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. Jn.15:4

I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. Jn.15:5

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. Jn 15:6

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Jn 15:7

Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. Ph.1:11

For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before

in the word of the truth of the gospel; Col 1:5

Grace and peace (fruits) be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 2Pe 1:2

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 2Pe 1:3

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2Pe 1:4

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; 2Pe 1: 5

Paul never speaks of Spirit as a third member of the godhead: in Romans 7-8 the conflict is between HIS flesh an HIS spirit:

Rom. 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. 

Rom. 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit

There are no upper case Spirit words in the Bible. By showing that his mind and his spirit are interchangeable, we know that he is not speaking of The Holy Spirit as a third "people" of a polytheistic Godhead. The phrase is "spirit of life" which is not A Holy Person.  Jesus said my Words are spirit and life (John 6:63)

Rom. 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom. 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom. 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, 

        who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom. 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh;
        but they that are after the Spirit [do mind] the things of the Spirit.
If a Divine Being literally lives INSIDE of us then does walking in the Spirit mean what it says? IN does not mean INSIDE OF: We live 'In connection' out own spirit rather than let the lust of the flesh do the leading.
Gal. 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit,
        and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal. 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit,
        and the Spirit against the flesh:
        and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would

Gal. 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal. 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal. 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.


Phil. 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer,
        and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,


Phil. 1:20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always,
        so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
Phil. 1:21  For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Phil. 1:22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.
"The Spirit Helpeth Our Infirmity"

K.C.Moser: It has already been learned that by means of the "Spirit of God that dwelleth in you" the lust of the flesh is killed. In the same chapter (Rom. 8:26) Paul tells us the Spirit helps our infirmities. But not only in a general way does he help; he helps in special ways.

And in like manner the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered; and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Rom. 8:26, 27.)
Quoting the context refute K.C.Moser who was trained in the usual "proof text" style to which he adds further expounding which is the private interpretation which Peter outlawed as the sure mark of a false teacher. I hope that you do not gag at all of the context.

The conflict in Romans 7 is between HIS body and HIS spirit. We know that our own spirit is that which governes the body of flesh. Paul never struggled against a spirit PERSON but his own. Because he received A holy spirit when he was baptized "to wash away his sing" (Acts 22:16), it was not cluttered with all of his previous sins and was able therefore to govern his own body.

The Spirit in Romans 8 is the Spirit OF God or the Spirit OF God. That is the Mind of God which does not groan because  it is not subject to death and decay.  When Jesus groaned as a man: 
Rom 8:1 THERE is therefore now no condemnation to them
........ which are in Christ Jesus,
........ who walk not after the flesh, [human]
........ but after the Spirit[human]

Rom 8:2 For the law of the
........ Spirit OF life in Christ Jesus [we are baptized into Christ]
........ hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [and free from the Law of Ordinances]

Rom 8:3 For what THE LAW could not do, in that it was weak through THE FLESH,
........ God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin IN the flesh:
Pr 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: behold,
........I will pour out my SPIRIT thatunto you,
........I will make known my WORDS which unto you.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God:
........for it is not subject to the law of God,
........neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8 So then they that are IN the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but IN the Spirit,
........if so be that the Spirit OF God dwell in you.
........Now if any man have not the Spirit OF Christ, he is none of his.
If the Spirit groans it is named "Jesus Christ the Righteous." I am certain that He groans when mercinaries destroy the Spirit which He put into His Words which came from God without measure--yea, without METER.
Jn 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping,
        and the Jews also weeping which came with her,
        he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption 
        into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Rom 8:21

For we know that
        travaileth in pain together until now. Rom 8:22

And not only they, but ourselves also,
        which have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
        even we ourselves groan within ourselves,
        waiting for the adoption,
        to wit, the redemption of our body. Rom 8:23

Isa 26:8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; 
        the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

Isa 26:9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night;    
        yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: 
        for when thy judgments are in the earth, 
        the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness
 
2Cor. 5:2 For in this we groan
        earnestly desiring to be clothed upon
        with our house which is from heaven:
2Cor. 5:4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan,
        being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon,
        that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

K.C.Moser: When the child of God meets his extremities and knows not how to pray, the Spirit comes to his rescue. Man may not be able to utter his needs, for he may not know them; but the Spirit "himself" is present to make intercessions for us. "And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit." And who is it that has not felt the need of prayer that he could not utter? God knows man's needs. This is why he gave him the Spirit. Let us be thankful.

The word Spirit is commentary: it most often means spirit which is never a person but a mental attitude of that person.

K.C.Moser: The Spirit also bears witness of our present acceptance with God.

For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God. (Rom. 8:15, 16.)

This does not read "ye received the Spirit." It is the spirit OF bondage which is the mental disposition of a person in bondage. In the same way, the spirit OF sonship is the mind of an orphan who has been adopted into a family.  There is no PERSON called The Spirit of Bondage.  "He has a nasty spirit" does not mean that he is twins.

Simply hearing Christ first-hand, hearing the Apostles or hearing their inspired record is the Spirit's testimony to our spirit. However, the testimony must work both ways: our spirit must agree with and accept the witness coming from God to us. McGarvey on the Holy Spirit notes:

"But, when a man has heard this testimony of the Spirit of God, he is not yet quite ready to say whether he himself is, or is not, a child of God.

There is another witness yet to be examined before a conclusion can be reached, and though his testimony is given so briefly and so silently as to be sometimes overlooked, it is, on this account, none the less indispensable.

This second witness, according to McGarvey, is our own spirit as the subject of Romans eight. The "spirit of adoption" is not a personal spirit called adoption. Rather, when we have the spirit or mental disposition of sonship we believe that we are children of God. We begin to think of Him as Father and not as "foster-care-giver." Our spirit is also a "he" or "Him" because it is our true or inner person:

"This witness is your own spirit. He is the only witness who can tell you, with certainty, whether you have believed with all the heart, or whether you have really, through sorrow for sin, turned away from it. And still further, in the present distracted condition of the public mind on the subject of baptism, your own soul must testify for itself--as it will answer to God in the great day--whether you have been really baptized.

Here is the seal and the testimony:

This witness with John's baptism was also a direct witness to those who observed. The second-hand witness was no less witness:

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29

But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. Luke 7:30 

K.C.Moser: Note that the Spirit bears witness that we "are" children of God, not that we once became children of God. It is of our present acceptance that he testifies. Every child is an heir of God. This is the significance of the word "child" or "son" in the Scriptures. "And if children, then heirs." One is a child so long as he is an heir, and no longer. Figures should not be pressed. Certainly from a fleshly standpoint a child is a child regardless of his conduct. But we must not, therefore, conclude that a child of God is a child regardless of his conduct. This erroneous position is the basis of another unsound doctrine--namely, once saved, always saved. But if once a child, always a child, then it certainly follows that once an heir, always an heir; "for if children, then heirs." The word "child" signifies "heir."

McGarvey: In respect to our own spirit's testimony, especially, have our friends of the religious parties generally misunderstood this passage of Scripture. They understand the text as if it read:

"The Spirit itself bears witness to our spirit that we are children of God." This would make but one witness, the Holy Spirit.

But Paul has two witnesses, for he says: "The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit." This is an exact translation of the Greek.

Now, when I testify to my brother, there is but one witness; but when I testify with him, he and I are both witnesses, and my testimony agrees with his. This is just Paul's idea. The Holy Spirit itself bears testimony which agrees with the testimony of our own spirit, that we are children of God. The point of agreement is just this,

that the character which the Holy Spirit asserts to be that of a child of God, agrees with what my own spirit asserts to be my own character.

1John 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 
1John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
1John 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 

K.C.Moser: The Spirit testifying is the "Spirit of God that dwelleth in you," as Paul had just said. This indwelling Spirit is the Spirit of sonship, given to us because we are sons. (Gal. 4:6.) Naturally, then, his work would be to make us recognize God as our Father. Hence, the apostle says: "Whereby we cry, Abba, Father." "Cry" is present tense. It is a present recognition of which Paul speaks. Now, if one through the influence of the Spirit claims God as Father, this is proof of his sonship. And thus the "Spirit beareth witness with our Spirit, that we are children of God." Note that this testimony is not in the form of a revelation, as though our sonship were unknown to us. The Spirit bears witness "with our spirit." How is this done? Crying, "Abba, Father," is caused by the Spirit. But it is "we" who "cry." Thus our spirit and the Holy Spirit coöperate, the Holy Spirit inciting and "we" crying. Moffatt's rendering of this passage makes the meaning plain:

You have received no slavish spirit that would make you relapse into fear; you have received the Spirit of sonship. And when we cry, "Abba, Father!" it is this Spirit testifying along with our own spirit that we are children of God.

Crying, "Abba, Father," is the testimony given. If we are sons, God is our Father; but through the Spirit "we cry, Abba, Father." Therefore, we are sons. This passage can mean nothing else when interpreted according to the context. All other interpretations bear marks of being forced.

THE SPIRIT OF SONSHIP

The spirit OF SONSHIP does not speak of The Holy Spirit named Jesus Christ the Righteous.  The Holy Spirit is NOT the son of Jesus Christ.  We have the "mental disposition of a Son" when we imitate the Son and become obedient to THE FAITH.  One is never born nor adopted because of faith only.

An orphan who is adopted now has the "mental disposition" of a son. A son obeyes the father: one does not have the spirit of the father if he simply believes in his father:

Gal 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come,
         God sent forth his Son,
made of a woman,
         made under the law,

Gal 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law,
         that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Why is it that Moser thinks people are superior to Jesus:

Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Faith does not do the job: you must obey that which you trust.

Ac.6:7 And the word of God increased;

         and a great company of the priests were obedient to THE FAITH

How and when do we become sons of God?

Gal. 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law,
        shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Gal. 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ,
        that we might be justified by faith.
Gal. 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Gal. 3:26
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal. 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
 
Gal. 3:29 And if ye be Christ’s,

        then
are ye Abraham’s seed,
        and heirs according to the promise
.

In birth or adoption the person is WASHED, given new clothes and a new name.

Gal 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit OF his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Gal 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

The Spirit A Seal And Earnest

K.C.Moser: The Spirit in the child of God is God's mark of ownership and his pledge to us of our future inheritance.

In whom ye also, having heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation,--in whom, having also believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is an earnest of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God's own possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Eph. 1:13, 14.)

Commenting on the word "seal" in this passage. Thayer says that God "by the gift of the Holy Spirit indicates who are his." Adam Clarke has this to say on this passage:

The Holy Spirit, which is promised to them who believe on Christ Jesus, was given to you, and thus you were ascertained to be the children of God; for God has no child who is not a partaker of the Holy Ghost, and he who has this Spirit has God's seal that he belongs to the heavenly family.

That is true, but Clark does not identify the "spirit" as separated from Christ. By implication and the voice of those who claim the indwelling--a second incarnation--this must also teach.  If the literal infusion of a Spirit Being into our body is necessary to KEEP us accepting God as father; and if that is necessary to continue to perfect us the K.C.Moser and his discipiples defend the SECOND WORK OF GRACE beyond being "saved" at baptism.  Here is what Moser affirms:

Adam Clarke is also found in a place or two to speak of "another baptism" of the Spirit in the accomplishment of entire sanctification [Clarke's Christian Theology, p. 206].

Clarke states that this birth of the Spirit is the same as the baptism of the Spirit, for he comments, "Reader, hasn't thou never had any other baptism than that of water? If thou hast not had any other, take Jesus Christ's word for it, thou canst not, in thy present state, enter into the kingdom of God. I would not say to thee merely, read what it is to be born of the Spirit; but pray, O pray to God incessantly, till He gives thee to feel what is implied in it! Remember, it is Jesus only who baptizes with the Holy Ghost; see John 1:33. He who receives not this baptism has neither right nor title to the kingdom of God; nor can he with any propriety be termed a Christian, because that which essentially distinguishes the Christian dispensation from that of the Jews was, that its author baptizes all His followerswith the Holy Ghost." Also in Clarke's Christian Theology he says of the experience of entire sanctification, "What then is this complete sanctification? It is the cleansing of the blood of that that has not been cleansed; it is washing the soul of a true believer from the remains of sin; it is the making one who is already a child of God more holy, that he may be more happy, more useful in the world, and bring more glory to his heavenly Father.... And does not the blood of Christ cleanse from all unrighteousness? Arise, then, and be baptized with a greater effusion of the Holy Ghost, and was away thy sin, calling on the name of the Lord" (p. 206). Clarke is here unconsciously saying that justification included a baptism or affusion of the Holy Spirit.

In the case of Matthew John and Jesus this was a SIGN just as it was on the Apostles manifested in the four areas where Jesus promised SIGNS:

Matt. 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism,
        he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Matt. 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Matt. 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves,
        We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you,
        that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

You may not WANT this:

Matt. 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees:
        herefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Matt. 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance:
        but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear:
        he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Matt. 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor,
        and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
John 1:31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, 
        therefore am I come baptizing with water.
John 1:32 And John bare record, saying,
        I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water,
        the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending,
        and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
John 1:34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
Once the judgmental signs of tongues had been manifested to the four groups to pronounce JUDGMENT against the Jews who were mostly Edomites or "vipers," any such manifestation of toungues afterward would mark a false prophet or "musical prophesier." While they were sons of Abraham they were not of Isaac.  Now, see to whom this baptism was promised:
Luke 3:7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him,
        O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Luke 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves,
        We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you,
        That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

        and cast into the fire.
We are WASHED by WATER and the WORD: The Words of Christ are SPIRIT and they work to PURGE OUT the evil spirit so that we have been REFINED as by fire.  In no sense does this BLAST FURNACE mean that the wind (spirit) out of YOUR mouth is holy.
Is. 4:4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion,
        and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof
        by the SPIRIT of judgment, and by the SPIRIT of burning. 

Jeremiah 5:13 And the prophets shall become wind (spirit),
         ..and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

Jeremiah 5:14  Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts,
         ..Because ye speak this word,
         ..behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire,
         ..and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Job 15:34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate,
        and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
Job 15:35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
People's OWN spirit will BURN THEM UP. The get pregnant on chaff and bring forth stubble.
Is. 33:10 Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.
Is. 33:11 Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath [SPIRIT], as fire, shall devour
Is. 33:12 And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.

Is. 33:14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites.
        Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire?
        who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
Is. 33:15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly;
        he that despiseth the gain of oppressions,
        that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes,
        that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil

K.C.Moser: And on the word translated "earnest" Thayer says: "An earnest--i. e., money which in purchases is given as a pledge that the full amount will subsequently be paid." Now, the Holy Spirit is God's pledge to his children--that is, the Spirit is God's assurance to his children that their future inheritance is sure. It is "an earnest of our inheritance." Moffatt says: "The pledge and installment of our common heritage." Goodspeed: "The advance installment of our inheritance." The Twentieth Century New Testament: "The Spirit is a pledge of our future heritage."

Not the least among the benefits of the indwelling Spirit is the incentive to holiness, provided one acknowledges his presence. We have seen how Paul used the recognition of his presence as a reproof to the immoral Corinthians and an incentive to holy living.

Know ye not that ye are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man destroyeth the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, and such are ye. (1 Cor. 3:16, 17.)
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

Or know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God? and ye are not your own; for ye were bought with a price: glorify God therefore in your body. (1 Cor. 6:18-20.)

We have noted that the concept is of a baptized believer having A holy spirit: that is, the unholy spirit has been regenerated or born again so that we have a NEW spirit or a GOOD conscience.  After baptism in 1 Peter 3:21 we have a good conscience, consciousness or a co-perception. That means that the Spirit OF Christ can dwell in our spirit by faith.  Only having the Mind or Spirit of Christ could there be any impact of the awareness of sin.  If you HOLD the prostitute in your spirit you make the Mind of Christ a partner in your sins.

Jn 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
        ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Jn 4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, 
        the hour cometh, when ye shall
        neither in this mountain, [PLACE]
        nor yet at Jerusalem,
        worship the Father. [PLACE]
Jn 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is OF the Jews.

Neither the Jews nor the cursed sacrificial system PRODUCED salvation: Salvation (Jesus) is OUT of the Jews where Salvation in Hebrew is the name of Jesus.
The prepositions in the Greek are far more specific. The Greek word used here is "Ek" (h1537) which means "origin."  The correct translation of this word is “OUT OF” not “of.”
"And thus Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah; for OUT OF ("Ek" g1537) thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel."  Matthew 2:6
Jn 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the 
        true [Truthful] worshippers shall worship the Father in  
        spirit

        for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

HERE IS THE DIRECT COMMAND FOR HOW TO CONDUCT SYNAGOGUE

1Tim. 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to [public] reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Doctrine is teaching is imparting knowledge or the habit producted by instruction. The synagogue explained any unclear passage which had been read. Exhortation means to bring the COMFORTER'S Words to Comfort us (Rom 15)
Prosecho devote oneself to the service of any one, esp. a god, Pi.P.6.51 (dub.).

The ONLY way to worship The True God whose Words are His son in contrast to Zeus (father) and Hermes (son)

"The word that is employed for this "anaginosko, anagnosis) is the technical term for the cultic reading aloud of the Old Testament in the synagogue. By applying this terminology to the reading of his own epistles he not only ascribes the same authority to the apostolic word as to the Old Testament writings...he also combines a quotation from the Old Testament with a word of Jesus and introduces the whole with the familiar formula: 'for the Scripture says.'" (Ridderbos, Hermon, Paul, P. 483 an Outline of His Theo., Eerdmans)

K.C.Moser: The temple of the Holy Spirit should be kept holy. When I know that God has honored me to the extent of making for himself a temple of my body by placing the Holy Spirit within me, I am constrained to live holily. The presence of even a good person has a powerful influence for righteousness upon one. How much greater influence for good is the presence of the Holy Spirit! I am willing for the tree to be judged by its fruits just here--not that every person who believes that he is a temple of God is worthy of emulation, but the rule, so far as my observation has extended, convinces me that one is made better who sincerely believes that God made him a "temple of the Holy Spirit." 

WORSHIP IN THE PLACE OF OUR HOLY SPIRIT OUTLAWS THAT WHICH MOSER MIGHT APPROVE.

K.C.Moser: I am certain that no one thinks it is best for one not to think the Spirit dwells within him--that is, to believe that the Holy Spirit is not present with him. Really, I think such faith would naturally cause one to be careless about his conduct. Whatever influence is exerted on one who believes himself to be a "temple of the Holy Spirit," we do know that the apostle Paul intended that such faith become an incentive to holy living. I most certainly believe it is. Let us not take away one of God's inducements to holy living. Christians are careless enough at best. I sincerely believe that when I contend for the doctrine of the personal indwelling of the Spirit I am doing the best part by the kingdom of heaven. I am afraid of the consequences of the opposite teaching.

Jesus and Paul have made it perfectly clear that worship is in the PLACE of our own holy spirit as we give heed to the Word of God.  If one thinks that a Divine Person lives in their carnal body it would be impossible not to validate sinful worship by ones subjective feelings.  This can and does cause people to say that the Spirit told them that "God commands instrumental praise" and we must not disobey.  This "spirit" informs the liars that their own lusts can substitute from PREACHING the Word by READING it each week as a school of Christ. ONLY the human spirit is involved in a true church and the SPIRIT is a handy excuse for doing body worship and making worship IN the spirit impossible.  Paul identifies the DOGS as the Cynic praise singers and EXCLUDES them from worship IN THE SPIRIT in contrast to IN THE FLESH.

K.C.Moser:  We have by the plainest of language proved the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. When the Scriptures say again and again, "The Spirit of God dwelleth in you," all doubt should cease. If such Scriptures do not prove the indwelling of the Spirit, then I do not know what to do with such statements as God made with respect to his Son: "This is my beloved Son." Reader, why should God mean just what he said in one of the following statements and not in the other?

This is my beloved Son. (Matt. 3:17.)The Spirit of God dwelleth in you. (Rom. 8:9, 11; 1 Cor. 3:16.)

That is true but from prophecy to fulfillment the SPIRIT is the WORD of Christ.  That WORD must dwell in us as the only way to minister SPIRIT or the MIND of Christ.  There is no Biblical or historical evidence for a separated Spirit which dwells literally in the human body other than in the mind.

I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, because God's word says so. Likewise I believe that the Spirit of God dwells within his children, because his word says so. I believe it to be my privilege to preach that Jesus is God's Son. I believe it to be likewise a privilege to preach that my body is "a temple of the Holy Spirit." I am afraid to be guilty of robbing Christians of one of the most comforting doctrines of the whole Bible by trying to explain away the plainest of Scriptures; but I am not afraid of being condemned for preaching false doctrine when I teach word for word the doctrines of inspired apostles. It is evident to many that the church of the Lord is suffering today because this most wholesome doctrine has not received the emphasis it so richly deserves. When it is preached, people will believe it; and when they believe it, they must be made better.

But we have shown that Christ conveys His mind or spirit by preaching His own Words which He plainly says ARE Spirit and are Life (John 6:63).  His Words are the Spirit drink and food as the only way to transfer life. On the other hand, it is almost absolute that when people think that they have a member of the Godhead literally living in theirliteral body whatever they do can be and is attributed to the Spirit: if one gets enraptured (raped) during "praise singing" then they will make the fatal step of equating their aroused senses with the proof of the spirit. Thereafter, there is no force on earth that can cause them to change their minds.

K.C.Moser: Not only have we proved the fact of the indwelling of the Spirit in God's children, but we have as plainly shown by the Scriptures what are its purposes. In language unambiguous God's apostle wrote that by the Spirit the lust of the flesh is put to death. (Rom. 8:13.) 

We have shown that the CONFLICT is between Paul's flesh and Paul's spirit.

What a stupendous task! If this were all the Spirit is said to accomplish, it would certainly not be given in vain. He is God's pledge to us (1) of a resurrection to immortality (Rom. 8:11; 2 Cor. 5:1-5), (2) of our future inheritance (Eph. 1:13, 14). He is God's mark of ownership. (Eph. 1:13, 14.) He testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. (Rom. 8:15, 16.) "The Spirit also helpeth our infirmity. (Rom. 6:26.) He intercedes for us before the throne of grace. (Rom. 8:26, 27.) He is one of the very strongest incentives to holiness. (1 Cor. 3:16, 17; 6:18-20.)

There is only one Comforter or Intercessor: His Name is Jesus Christ the Righteous.  John said that if you deny the Father-Son meaning of God in heaven and Jesus of Nazareth on earth you are an ANTI-Christ. All who strive to separate the Spirit OF Christ from Jesus Christ are in trouble.


Now, these things we learn, not by any course of reasoning, but from plain statements. Reasoning does have a legitimate place in teaching the Bible, but it is very easy to make a mistake in our reasonings. But how one can go wrong in teaching the very words of the Scripture is not easy to understand. In presenting proof for both the fact and the function of the indwelling Spirit, plain, simple statements from God's word have been relied upon. What stronger proof can one produce?

But the Spirit of Christ would never lead anyone to lift isolated verses out of context and defacto blaspheme the Spirit by saying that what the writer says is what the spirit said.
