Book of Enoch book 2

Chapter 1

1 The words of the blessing of Enoch, wherewith he blessed the elect and righteous, who will be

2 living in the day of tribulation, when all the wicked and godless are to be removed.

And he took up his parable and said -
Enoch a righteous man, whose eyes were opened by God,
saw the vision of the Holy One in the heavens, which the angels showed me, and from them I heard everything, and from them I understood as I saw,
..........but not for this generation, but for a remote one which is for to come.
3 Concerning the elect I said, and took up my parable concerning them:
..........The Holy Great One will come forth from His dwelling,

4 And the eternal God will tread upon the earth, (even) on Mount Sinai,
..........[And appear from His camp]
..........And appear in the strength of His might from the heaven of heavens.

5 And all shall be smitten with fear
..........And the Watchers shall quake,
..........And great fear and trembling shall seize them unto the ends of the earth.

6 And the high mountains shall be shaken,
..........And the high hills shall be made low,
..........And shall melt like wax before the flame

7 And the earth shall be wholly rent in sunder,
..........And all that is upon the earth shall perish,
..........And there shall be a judgement upon all (men).

8 But with the righteous He will make peace.

And will protect the elect,
And mercy shall be upon them.
And they shall all belong to God,
And they shall be prospered,
And they shall all be blessed.
And He will help them all,
And light shall appear unto them,
And He will make peace with them'.

9 And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of His holy ones

To execute judgement upon all,
And to destroy all the ungodly:
And to convict all flesh
Of all the works of their ungodliness which they have ungodly committed,
And of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.

Chapter 2

1 Observe ye everything that takes place in the heaven,
..........how they do not change their orbits, and the luminaries which are in the heaven,
..........how they all rise and set in order each in its season, and

2 transgress not against their appointed order. Behold ye the earth, and give heed to the things which take place upon it from first to last, how steadfast they are, how none of the things upon earth

3 change, but all the works of God appear to you. Behold the summer and the winter, how the whole earth is filled with water, and clouds and dew and rain lie upon it.

Chapter 3

1 Observe and see how (in the winter) all the trees seem as though they had withered and shed all their leaves, except fourteen trees, which do not lose their foliage but retain the old foliage from two to three years till the new comes.

Chapter 4

1 And again, observe ye the days of summer how the sun is above the earth over against it. And you seek shade and shelter by reason of the heat of the sun, and the earth also burns with growing heat, and so you cannot tread on the earth, or on a rock by reason of its heat.

Chapter 5

1 Observe ye how the trees cover themselves with green leaves and bear fruit: wherefore give ye heed and know with regard to all His works, and recognize how He that liveth for ever hath made them so.

2 and all His works go on thus from year to year for ever, and all the tasks which they accomplish for Him, and their tasks change not, but according as God hath ordained so is it done.

3 And behold how the sea and the rivers in like manner accomplish and change not their tasks from His commandments'.

4 But ye -ye have not been steadfast, nor done the commandments of the Lord,
..........But ye have turned away and spoken proud and hard words
..........With your impure mouths against His greatness.
..........Oh, ye hard-hearted, ye shall find no peace.

5 Therefore shall ye execrate your days, Enoch 7:1,
..........And the years of your life shall perish,
..........And the years of your destruction shall be multiplied in eternal execration,
..........And ye shall find no mercy.

6a In those days ye shall make your names an eternal execration unto all the righteous,

6b And by you shall all who curse, curse,

And all the sinners and godless shall imprecate by you,

6c And for you the godless there shall be a curse.

6d And all the . . . shall rejoice,

6e And there shall be forgiveness of sins,

6f And every mercy and peace and forbearance:

6g There shall be salvation unto them, a goodly light.

6h And for all of you sinners there shall be no salvation,

6i But on you all shall abide a curse.

7a But for the elect there shall be light and joy and peace,

7b And they shall inherit the earth.

8 And then there shall be bestowed upon the elect wisdom,

And they shall all live and never again sin,
Either through ungodliness or through pride:
But they who are wise shall be humble.

9 And they shall not again transgress,

Nor shall they sin all the days of their life,
Nor shall they die of (the divine) anger or wrath,
But they shall complete the number of the days of their life.
And their lives shall be increased in peace,
And the years of their joy shall be multiplied,
In eternal gladness and peace,
All the days of their life.

Chapter Jubilees 5

1 And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters.

2 And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men

3 and beget us children.' And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: 'I fear ye will not

4 indeed agree to do this deed, and

I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.' And they all answered him and said:
'Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations

5 not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.' Then sware they all together and bound themselves
6
by mutual imprecations upon it.

And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn

7 and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And these are the names of their leaders: Samlazaz, their leader, Araklba, Rameel, Kokablel, Tamlel, Ramlel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal,

8 Asael, Armaros, Batarel, Ananel, Zaqlel, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel. These are their chiefs of tens.

Chapter 7

1 And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one,
and they began to go in unto them and to
defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms

2 and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they

3 became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed

4 all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against

5 them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and

6 fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

On a parchment fragment 4Q201(En ara) copied ca. 200-150 B.C.E. found at Qumrum:  Other texts

[They (the leaders) and all ... of them took for themselves] wives from all that they chose and [they began to cohabit with them and to defile themselves with them]; and to teach them sorcery and [spells and the cutting of roots; and to acquaint them with herbs.] And they become pregnant by them and bo[re (great) giants three thousand cubits high ...]
     - Book of Enoch (from Translation by J. C. Greenfield

"Later Jewish tradition has it that their seduction was at least partly their own fault since they had taught the girls the art of cosmetics, and so had begun the awful progress of mankind to degeneracy and sexual abandon. More important, 'they taught them charms and enchantments, the cutting of roots, and make them acquainted with plants..." (Enoch 7:1ff)."
     - John M. Allegro, The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross

"The Hebrew word for giants (nephilum) literally means the fallen-down-ones because these tall celestial beings fell from the sky. Their half-breed progeny and their descendants are often mentioned in the early books of the Old Testament until the last of them were finally killed off. They were known as the Rephaim [Hebrew for 'phantoms'], Emim, Anakim, Horim, Avim, and Zamzummim. Some scholars speculate that this tradition of giants born from the union of gods and humans formed the basis for the demigod of Greek mythology."

Key to Music

Chapter 8

1 And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all

The king of Tyre was the agent of Lucifer according to Ezekiel. In describing the breastplate two Israelite tribes are left out. They are replaced with tambourines and flutes or pipes:

Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Eze.28:13

At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the span of a king's life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute: Is.23:15

Take up a harp, walk through the city, O prostitute forgotten; play the harp well, sing many a song, so that you will be remembered." Is.23:16

At the end of seventy years, the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her hire as a prostitute and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. Is.23:17

According to Psalm 41, Judas as the agent of Satan and the den of vipers in Jerusalem, represented the same seductive force Satan always used against God's people. Jesus said that:

They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. Lu.7:32

Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: because the riches that he hath gotten are perished. Je.48:36

2 colouring tinctures. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they

3 were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root-cuttings, 'Armaros the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal (taught) astrology, Kokabel the constellations, Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry went up to heaven . . .

Enchantment:

Gurney describes the Hittite worship and shows that the rituals were almost identical to the Canaanite and Hebrew worship. One of the features of 'sympathetic' magic among the Hittites was the "Old Woman" or "wise woman" which may mean "midwife." Other scholars note that early musicians acted as midwifes between a worshipper and their god. Gurney notes that "thirteen such women are known, but they function as sorceresses in countless rituals." Of the sorceresses who performed magic through the incantation of what we would call a poem or song, the "author" are 3 midwives, 1 doctor, 1 prostitute, and

2 temple singers."

"By contrast, many of the male practitioners or magicians were called priest, diviners, augurers, doctors (Gurney, O.R., Some Aspects of Hittite Religion, Oxford University Press, 1977, p. 45).

"In the story of the goddess Ishtar's descent into the underworld he (Ea) is described as creator god. In the deluge story he saves Utnapishtim, the Babylonian Noah.

Ea's charicteristic is wisdom, but this includes cunning deceit,
as shown in the behavior to
Adapa in the myth of mankind's loss of immortality.
He is
patron of exorcists, the 'sons of Eridu.' His holy waters are used to purify places, priests and utensils at ceremonies of exorcism, besides houses, temples, cities and persons inhabited by evil spirits... With his wisdom kings and craftsmen are endowed: the arts of civilization are by his grace." (Britannica, Ea) (He is also patron god of music as the exorcist's weapon).
These are the gifts Ishtar or Inanna gained From Ea, the demon god:

"My father has given me the me:

He gave me the high priesthood.
He gave me godship.
He gave me the noble, enduring crown.
He gave me the throne of kingship.

He gave me the noble sceptre.

He gave me ascent from the underworls.
He gave me the kurgurra.

It is not uncommon in defending "civilian" homosexuality to ascribe the Biblical condemnation to cult or religious prostitution. However, one doubts that male-female adultery in the cut sense would give authority for male-female adultery in the "civilian" sense.

The kurgarru, the assinu, and the kulu'u
performed plays,
music,
dances, and
games during rituals

David Greenberg, in The Construction of Homosexuality (pages 96 and following), finds further support for this in other nearby ancient cultures: among others, a fourth century B.C. Phoenician inscription found on Cyprus "refers to a category of temple personnel who played a role in the sacred service of Astarte, identifies the kelev (dog) as a religious functionary.... The Sumerogram [a picture-word] for assinu, a male-homosexual cult prostitute... joines the symbols for 'dog' and 'woman.'"

Greenberg points out Hittite, Babylonian and Assyrian texts which refer to these male prostitutes. The texts picture assinu and kurgarru as

"religious functionaries particularly associated with the goddess Ishtar,
who danced, played musical instruments, wore masks,
and were considered f....
such functionaries were believed to have magical powers...
'if a man touches the head of an assinu, he will conquer his enemy'...
'if a man has intercourse with an assinu, trouble will leave him.'"

Religious Symbolism: "Music, like the word, also may have symbolic meaning. The basic elements out of which musical symbolism is built are sounds, tones, melodies, harmonies, and the various musical instruments, among which is the human voice. Sound effects can have a numinous (spiritual) character and may be used to bring about contact with the realm of the holy. A specific tone may call one to an awareness of the holy, make the holy present, and produce an experience of the holy. This may be done by means of drums, gongs, bells, or other instruments. The ritual instruments can, through their shape or the materials from which they are made, have symbolic meaning. The Uitoto in Colombia, for example, believe that all the souls of their ancestors are contained in the ritual drums. Britannica Members Page 21 of 45+

The enchantments in the Book of Enoch are described as the power of Satan or Azazel to enter into the musical instruments. When the young Genun (Jubal) played on them people believed that the gods were speaking to them. Indeed, in this story alluded to by Jude from the book of Enoch--referred to dozens of times in the New Testament--teach that Satan is actually indwelling the music and the musican to deceive people:

Notes from the Books of Ysrael. From Hebrew Myths: The Book of Genesis By Robert Graves and Raphael Patai. Chapter 18 p. 100-107

(p) It was the Cainite's punishment to have a hundred daughters borne them for each son; and this led to such husband-hunger that their women began to raid houses and carry off men.

One day it pleased them to seduce them Sethites, after daubing their faces with rouge and powder, their eyes with antimony, and the soles of their feet with scarlet, dyeing their hair, putting on golden earrings, golden anklets, bracelets, and many-colored garments.

In their ascent of the holy mountain, they twanged harps, blew trumpets, beat drums, sang, danced, clapped hands; then, having addressed the five hundred and twenty anchorites in cheerful voices,

each caught hold of her victim and seduced him. These Sethites, after once succumbing to the Cainite women's blandishments,

became more unclean than dogs, and utterly forgot God's laws.

(r) Genun the Canaanite, son of Lamech the Blind, living in the Land of the Slime Pits,
..........
was ruled by Azael from his earliest youth,
..........and invented all sorts of musical instruments.
..........When he played these, Azael entered into them too,
..........so that they gave forth seductive tunes entrancing the hearts of all listeners.
Genun would assemble companies of musicians, who inflamed one another with music until their lust burned bright like fire, and they lay together promiscuously. He also brewed beer, gathered great crowds in taverns, gave them to drink,

and taught them to forge iron swords and spear-points, with which to do murder at random when they were drunk.

In the land of the slime pits, Babylonia, it was Ishtar or Inanna who got her father, Ea, the patron god of music drunk and seduced him into giving her the ME. These included:

"In the name of my power! In the name of my holy shrine!

To my daughter Inanna I shall give Truth!
Descent into the underworld!
Ascent from the underworld!
The art of lovemaking!
The art of kissing the phallus!"
He gave me the holy shrine.
He gave me the holy priestess of heaven.
He gave me the resounding musical instrument.
He gave me the art of song.
He gave me the art of the elder.

He gave me the kurgurra.
The kurgarru, the assinu, and the kulu'u performed plays, music, dances, and games (rising up to play) during rituals. These were musical worship teams in addition to the eldership stolen from the "god."

The only historical characters which answer to the
fallen angels in Enoch are the children of Lamech.

"Pilikam, the next name, means in Sumerian "with intelligence to build." In Babylonian Semitic it would be literally Ina-uzni-eresu, or, rendered in one word, ummanu, "artificer." The Hebrew translation of this is Kenan, which means "artificer." Melamkish gives us the Hebrew Lamech by the simple elision of the first and last consonants.

"Langdon makes the suggestion that Lamech is the Sumerian, LUMHA, an epithet of the Babylonian god Ea as the patron of music. (Barton, p. 323)

Josephus notes that:

"Jubal, who was born of the same mother with him, exercised himself in music; (7) and invented the psaltery and the harp. But Tubal, one of his children by the other wife, exceeded all men in strength, and was very expert and famous in martial performances. He procured what tended to the pleasures of the body by that method; and first of all invented the art of making brass. Lamech was also the father of a daughter, whose name was Naamah.

"And because she was so skillful in matters of divine revelation, that he knew he was to be punished for Cain's murder of his brother, he made that known to his wives.

"Nay, even while Adam was alive, it came to pass that the posterity of Cain became exceeding wicked, every one successively dying, one after another, more wicked than the former. They were intolerable in war, and vehement in robberies; and if any one were slow to murder people, yet was he bold in his profligate behavior, in acting unjustly, and doing injuries for gain. Josephus

"Naamah, the sister of Tubal Cain, was from the side of Cain the murderer; she was a seducer of men and spirits, including Aza and Azael, who again were the children of God mentioned in Genesis. She became the mother of demons and is still abroad in the world, exciting the desires of me... She is associated with Lilith... and the fall of Adam." "Waite, The Holy Kabbalah, p. 274.)

In a similar story:

1 AFTER Cain had gone down to the land of dark soil, and his children had multiplied therein, there was one of them,

whose name was Genun (Jubal), son of Lamech the blind who slew Cain.

2 But as to this Genun, Satan came into him in his childhood;

and he made sundry trumpets and horns, and string instruments, cymbals and psalteries, and lyres and harps, and flutes; and he played on them at all times and at every hour.

3 And when he played on them,

Satan came into them, so that from among them were heard beautiful and sweet sounds, that ravished the heart.

Satan also taught Genun (Jubal) how to make intoxicants and the women how to decorate their bodies.

During the Classical period

Whatever the clear teachings of the Bible, the literature of all of the pagan "gods" carried the theme of wine, women and song. For instance, of Apollo whose oracle was at Delphi, just up the coast from Corinth show the connection between music and speaking in tongues:

"And there is this great wonder besides -- and its renown shall never perish -- the girls of Delos, hand-maidens of the Far-shooter;

for when they have praised Apollo first,
and also Leto and Artemis who
delights in arrows,
they
sing a strain-telling of men and women of past days,
and
charm the tribes of men. Also they can imitate the tongues of all men and their clattering speech:

each would say that he himself were singing, so close to truth is their sweet song.

That is, the performance of the female singers seduces people into believing that they are singing but they are mere spectators even if their lips move.

His half-brother, Hermes (Mercury) was similar: The story is the same, the gods bless only the youth to steal the cattle of the oder people or gods. Remember, that in Enoch the people are identified with the name of beasts, often cows.

"And when the purpose of great Zeus was fixed in heaven, she was delivered and a notable thing was come to pass. For then she bare a son, of many shifts, blandly cunning, a robber, a cattle driver, a bringer of dreams, a watcher by night, a thief at the gates, one who was soon to show forth wonderful deeds among the deathless gods.

Born with the dawning, at mid-day he played on the lyre, and in the evening he stole the cattle of far-shooting Apollo on the fourth day of the month; for on that day queenly Maia bare him.

After the Biblical period, according to Lucian of Samosata:

"Alexander, on the other hand, preferred his native place, urging very truly that an enterprise like theirs required congenial soil to give it a start,

in the shape of 'fat-heads' and simpletons; that was a fair description, he said, of the Paphlagonians beyond Abonutichus;

they were mostly superstitious and well-to-do; one had only to go there with someone to play the flute, the tambourine, or the cymbals, set the proverbial mantic sieve a-spinning, and there they would all be gaping as if he were a god from heaven.

Chapter 9

1 And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being

2 shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth. And they said one to another: 'The earth made without inhabitant cries the voice of their cryingst up to the gates of heaven.

3 And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men make their suit, saying, "Bring our cause

4 before the Most High."' And they said to the Lord of the ages: 'Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and God of the ages, the throne of Thy glory (standeth) unto all the generations of the

5 ages, and Thy name holy and glorious and blessed unto all the ages! Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou: and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all

6 things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee. Thou seest what Azazel hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which

7 men were striving to learn: And Semjaza, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates. And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the

9 women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. And the women have

10 borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness. And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have ascended: and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are

11 wrought on the earth. And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them, and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.'

Chapter 10

1 Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spake, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech,

2 and said to him: Go to Noah and tell him in my name "Hide thyself!" and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come

REVELATION 9:11 They had for their king the angel of the Abyss, whose name, in Hebrew, is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon, or the Destroyer. (NEB)

In Revelation 9:11, the mysterious angelic "king" of the Abyss is called by the names Abaddon and Apollyon. Both these names mean "destroyer." If you will recall, the primary sin for which Azazel was imprisoned was for teaching men how to create weapons and destroy one another through warfare. It seems likely that Azazel and Abaddon/Apollyon are the same being. Although not specifically mentioned by these names elsewhere in the Bible, Azazel plays a major role in the events at the end of this current age. For additional information on this powerful fallen angel and his activities in the end-time, see my article "Who Is The 'Destroyer'?"

Again;
(r)
Genun the Canaanite, son of Lamech the Blind, living in the Land of the Slime Pits,
..........
was ruled by Azael from his earliest youth,
..........and invented all sorts of musical instruments.
..........When he played these, Azael entered into them too,
..........so that they gave forth seductive tunes entrancing the hearts of all listeners.

Azazel is the chief of the Se'irim, or goat-demons, who haunted the desert and to whom most primitive Semitic (most likely non-Hebrew) tribes offered sacrifices.

The Old Testament states that Jeroboam appointed priests for the Se'irim. But Josiah destroyed the places of their worship, as the practices accompanying this worship involved copulation of women with goats.

The Se'irim, or hairy demons as the word itself means, are mentioned in Leviticus 17:7 and 2 Chronicles 11:15 as "goat-demons". Isaiah 34:14 says that the "goat-demons" greet each other amoung the ruins of Edom along with Lilith and other wild beasts.

"The religious poetry of the Ugaritic texts has been shown to have close affinities with the Phraseology of the Hebrew Psalms. From the same sources come references to a class of Temple personnel designated by the term serim, who exercised functions similar to those of the Hebrew singers during the monarchy and later times. Some of the servants of David who were designated in 1 Kings 4:31 by (a) term meaning 'aboriginal' or 'native sons,' and who possessed Canaanite names such as Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, were engaged in various forms of musical activity.

"A further reflection of this musical interest became apparent when Megiddo was excavated and the treasure room of the royal palace was uncovered. From this area was recovered a plaque inlaid with ivory, depicting a royal personage seated on a throne. He was drinking from a small bowl, and was being entertained by a court musician who stood before him plucking the strings of a lyre." (See Amos 5; 6; 8)

"With the later days of Solomon came a resurgence of Canaanite idolatry,
and when the kingdom began to function as two separate units, the breach between the religious life of the north and south was accentuated." (Harrison, R. K., Introduction to the Old Testament, Eerdmans, p. 335-6, see p. 411).

<>"Individuals or guilds of singers appeared under various designations, one of the more common being Asaph (Pss 50, 78-83). A prominant court-musician in the time of David bore this name (1 Chron. 6:39); 15:17), and it may well be that the 'sons of Asaph' in the period of Nehemiah (Neh. 7:44) were members of a musical guild that went back to the days of David and the monarchy. Ugaritic sources have testified amply to the existence of a class of Temple personnel known as sarim, who were analogous to the Hebrew singers of the monarchy and later times. As far as the Psalter was concerned, Asaph could refer either to the guild, to some member of it, or to their collection of religious poetry. The mention of Ethan the Ezrahite (Ps. 89; cf. 1 Chron. 6:44; in 1 Kgs. 4:31 Ethan is a Hebrew sage) and Heman the Ezrahite (Ps. 88; cf 1 Chron. 6:33
enshrined the native Canaanite tradition of music and psalmody, since as Albright has shown, the term 'ezrah means 'aboriginal.' Mention of the 'sons of Korah' (Pss 42:44-49, 84-85, 87-88) may imply the existence of another musical guild whose traditional origins probably reached back to Korah, the great-grandson of Levi (Numl 16:1ff; 1 Chron. 6:31Ff; 2 Chron 20:19)." Harrison, p. 979-980)

"Other names occurring in connection with the musical guilds are Chalcol (calcol) and Darda (I Chron. 2:6), which with Ethan and Heman appear in the list of wise men in I Kings 4:31. This classification is quite appropriate, since a great musician was commonly also a seer (I Chron. 25:5) or prophet (I Chron 25:2,3), as well as a wise man. Chalcol and Darda are designated 'sons of Mahol' or 'members of the orchestral guild,' and seem to reflect a class of plant or flower names applied to musicians. The equivalent of 'Chalcol' significantly appears on several ivories found at Megiddo in the hieroglyphic form of Kulkul, as a singer attached to the temple of Ptah in the Canaanite city of Ashkelon, dated about the thirteenth century B.C."
