21st Century Christian James Wood Predestination

James Wood's book on Ephesians is part of 21st Century Christian's "Flex" curriculum for adults. The problem with such books is that the direct command is to use one mind and one mouth using that which is written for our learning. In Ephesians 5 it is the "will of Christ" or "Spirit" (The Word John 6:63).  In Colossians it is the Word of Christ including the poems in the Book of Psalms which are the Mizmors or Psalms. By reading the text as it has survived and discussing it we can "hear" the Spirit of Christ speak when we can honestly say "thus saith the Lord." Dogma such as Predestination is bound to confuse and deprive people of simply reading and discussing Ephesians "as it was written for our learning."

I realize that you cannot accomplish much with a 13 week survey but it is a disservice to the students and a violation of the will and direct commandment to "teach that which is written for our learning." This review is for the few who might want to explore the real text.

I may have not fully understood James correctly: any corrections can be sent here: Ken Sublett

James has question my contention that God KNEW BEFORE the Jews: Paul does not say that God foreknew individuals and predestinated them to be saved or lost.

God Knew Before the small remnant of Jews who had not bowed to Baal.
God pre-purposed that the Gentiles would hear the same gospel.
God did not control the response of anyone to the gospel of Rest from rituals

God's right to pick certain people to carry out His will with His validation, does not mean that they were predestinated to heaven.

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;
        and before thou camest forth out of the womb
        I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. [Gentiles]
Jeremiah 1:6 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
Jeremiah 1:7 But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: f
        or thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee,
        and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.

Acts 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles,
        to take out of them a people for his name.
Acts 15:15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
Acts 15:16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, [tent]
        which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
Acts 15:17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord,
        and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord,
        who doeth all these things.
Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

You have the certainty or SEAL that you have accepted God's purpose when you teach the Prophets inspired by Christ and the prophecies made more certain by Jesus of Nazareth who validated His office to the Apostles whom He choose.  He did not do anyone a discervice by not  electing a dozen others to be the Testators of His Last Will and Testament.

The Church is built (edified or educated) on the Prophets and Apostles for faith and practice.

Those who build on the foundations of the Civil-Military-Clergy secular history of Israel are perhaps predestinated to failure because they deny the abrogating work of Jesus Christ.

I HAVE ADDED SOME PARALLEL PASSAGES BELOW.

Quick Review of James Wood, Chapter One

WORK OUT

Often we think of predestination as if every event were planned out in advance, or as if we have a certain destiny to be fulfilled.

There is no way to speak of predestination except in the context that God randomly selects infants to burn in hell: otherwise God has never pre-determined the actions of a single human connected to salvation.

Proof: Understand that when people use the word "predestination" in any sense they mean selected from eternity past to be saved or burned in hell.  You new daughter is probably a murderess!
T
Total Depravity - Human beings are so affected by the negative consequences of original sin that they are incapable of being righteous, and are always and unchangeably sinful; human freedom is totally enslaved by sin so we can only choose evil.
U
Unconditional Election - Since human beings cannot choose for themselves, God by His eternal decree has chosen or elected some to be counted as righteous, without any conditions being placed on that election.
L
Limited Atonement - The effects of the Atonement, by which God forgave sinful humanity, are limited only to those whom He has chosen. 'Whosoever will" is limited only to those God forces to obey by INFUSING faith into them without the Word.
I
Irresistible Grace - The grace that God extends to human beings to effect their election cannot be refused, since it has been decreed by God. There is nothing you can do: the gospel has no power unless God has preselected you.
P
Perseverance of the Saints - Since God has decreed the elect, and they cannot resist grace, they are unconditionally and eternally secure in that election. That means that there is no evil you can do which will lose your salvation.
If God planned in advance that Jews and Gentiles can be one in Christ that does not mean that God forces individual Jews to turn to Christ.

If God planned in advanced that faith in Jesus of Nazareth whom God has made to be both Lord and Christ as the only condition for Jew or Gentile to be elegible for baptism  that does not control who is or is not baptized.  There is no way to use the word "predestination" is our culture without massive confusion.

If they mean that God predestinates each individual to a fatal destiny then ask them to name one person who was ever forced by God to burn in hell. If the evil dogma had any rational basis then why does God not name names of individuals who met their doom even if they have lived a righteous life. What God KNOWS does not fall under the heading of even speaking the word almost always taught to mean that God may have randomly selected you from all eternity past to burn in hell.

After the garden of Eden there are many people called righteous and I don't think they were sprinkled before day 8.

Ask them to name names of one individual who is said to be evil because God said so. Jesus said that those who "speak on their own" are sons of the Devil.

Ask them to find one individual who is not blamed for their own sins.

God preserved a tiny remnant of Jews who had not bowed to Baal: these he prepurposed to forget their racial background and accept the Gentiles in Christ.  The only meaning of predestination for the Gentiles is that those who still lived outside of the curse of the Monarchy would be joined with the Jews outside of any ceremonial religion.

COOL DOWN

James Wood 21st Century Christian: The concept of predestination has caused countless arguments between Christians and it has been the grounds for people throughout history to doubt God’s goodness.

If remotely true we could doubt God's goodness. Proof texting has always been the method of the doctors of the Law "who take away the key to knowledge." Even John Calvin such a careful scholar scrapes the barrel for isolated concepts while the context refutes his teaching: he said that he gagged on Calvinism.

I believe that the object here is to believe that God predestinates to prove His power and STILL be convinced that it is the work of a GOOD God.  God always predestinates good and never evil.

We can feel logically trapped, because if God predestined us, then He must know everything that we’ve ever done or ever will do. In some way that makes Him responsible for our sins. But worse than that, it makes Him responsible for Hitler and the Holocaust. How could a God who is good predestine that?

However, it is clear that those he foreknew were the faithful Jews whom He had KNOWN BEFORE. He may or may not decide to know what everyone is going to do. If so then looking backward we never had any choice whether God forced us or not.  There is no trap for disciples who are readers of the word as it has been written.

God prepurposed only that samll remnant and did not force any of them to "call back" when He invited them through the Gospel. Calvinists read this proof-text:

PROVING PREDESTINATION:

John 6:43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Until Evangelists fail, the purpose was to go into all the world and call the name of God over them by preaching the gospel. Once people had made their choice the preacher shakes the dust off in respect to people like the pharisees who rejected the PREcounsel of God by not being baptized. The predestinated purpose was to make disciples and the curriculum was what Christ commanded to be taught in the Prophets and Apostles.

John Calvin said that no one could come to Christ without a direct operation of the Holy Spirit: He said that
  1. God gave us the Scriptures which are carriers of Spirit and
  2. He SENT evangelists to preach it
John Calvin on the Spirit and the Word

(a). The Apostles and all true Christians have embraced the written Word. This confirmed by a passage in Isaiah; also by the example and words of Paul.
(b). The Spirit of Christ SEALS the doctrine of the written Word on the minds of the godly.

Acts 2:38 calls this A holy spirit or mind. 1 Peter 3:21 calls it A good conscience, consciousness or a co-perception. You have SEAL when you can read BLACK text on BROWN Paper.

Ephesians 5:19 SPEAKING to yourselves
Is almost always read
Ephesians 5:19 SINGING to yourselves

3. Second Objection from the words of Paul as to the letter and spirit. The Answer, with an explanation of Paul's meaning. How the Spirit and the written Word are indissolubly connected.

Anyone who is not SENT but decides to come in out of the cold and build an institution REFUSES the Divine Command of the Spirit.
MISSING HOW GOD DRAWS
John 6:45 It is written in the prophets,
        And they shall be all taught of God.
        Every man therefore
        that hath heard,
        and hath learned of the Father,
        cometh unto me.

Examples to prove the point:

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
        and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
        even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, t
        hat whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
        but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
James notes that owever disturbing it might be, it MUST be true and Comforting.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: "On the other hand, there’s something very comforting in the concept that God is in complete control. The God who created the universe and molded the mountains is in charge of the course of my life.

That means that he is "predestinated" but enjoys it?

If God has free will (denied by the teachings of predestination after God made that FIRST decision from eternity past) and He is IN CHARGE of the course of our lives then WE are not in charge; we do not have free will.

How can I be afraid when I know that God will provide? How can I worry when, as Jesus said, He takes care of the sparrow and the flower in the field (Matthew 6:30, Matthew 10:29-30)? The chaos of life makes me crave a God who is in control of it all and has predestined me for good.

How would be so certain that they are predestinated for good and not for evil? isn't it presumptive to think that one is so favored and the other person gets no grace?  If James was controlled in his views of predestination, and I believe that the dogma as the aftertaste of failing to read the rest of the story, then is God not in control of me?

We know that evil things happen to good people: God is in control but being a loving Father He does not make his children into computer chips.  Evil people get rich: people are free to violate God's operating procedure or not but it would not be wise to claim that God must manipulate and protect us from falling rocks.  I strongly suggest that if you collect ten thousand devoted believers (a good sample) and drop rocks on their head ten thousand people would get smashed.

If you jump off a tall building you will die. God has provided a whole world system with resources and law: His purpose in Christ was to teach us how to grow spiritually. The POWER is in the message of Jesus Christ which covers the Prophets and Apostles: the power is not in some imagined PLAN for every life. We are here for training!

Ecclesiastes 3:13 And also that every man should eat and drink,
        and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
Ecclesiastes 5:19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth,
        and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion,
        and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
We cannot make a squash with all of human power; therefore, the Grace of God has given us the seed and we must plant and we must water but we cannot make a squash; God must give the increase. However, if one lives in a squash patch with a packet of seed and go limpwristed, God will make certain that we starve to death. That is what proves that He is in control through His Laws. You cannot violate any natural law without understanding that God is in control of the consequences: He is not in control (by choice) of who violates the law.
John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her,
        if thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink;
        thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
It seems that if you thirst for real water God would be a respecter of persons if He handed you a cup of cold water and not the thousands who thirst to death.  If you thirst for the Word of Christ which IS Spirit and Life  (John 6:63)  Jesus said that you have to ASK for it. If you thirst to death while the gushing spring runs then you despise the mercy of God. If theologians are fiddling while the world thirsts to death (Amos; Isaiah) this is the MARK that they have predestinated themselves to death.
Luke 7:29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans,
        justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John
Luke 7:30 But the Pharisees and lawyers
        rejected the counsel of God against themselves,
        being not baptized of him.
It would border on insanity to say that the Gospel was preached to the Pharisees and Lawyers and they COULD NOT accept and be baptized.

The concept of Hyper-Calvinism is that God is hands-on and in control of all of our life.  However, the Church of Christ is a School of Christ: it doesn't traffic dogma.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
        All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
            baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things
        whatsoever I have commanded you
:
        and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
If you claim this same "apostleship" the MARK that Christ is NOT with you is that you did not GO and you did not teach what HE commanded to be taught.

People have total free choice when invited to be baptized: those who are baptized receive A holy spirit or A good conscience, consciousness or a co-perception of the Word of Christ.

Would Jesus refuse to accept you into his School of the Word (Sole role of the ekklesia/synagogue) just because He didn't want you to even hear the Word.  It's much too early to decide who is going to hell while refusing to teach that which furnishes us for life and godliness. I bet God will work it out if we just attend His Bible class: sorry if you cannot find one of those.

Jesus had NOTHING to do with inviting you to a School of guitar playing or rehearsing: He invited you into the school of the word: Logos is the opposite of poetry or music.
Therefore, if you let the guitars do the talking the SEAL is that you have not yet received A holy spirit or A good conscience.

God does not predestinate but He does leave MARKERS so we don't go to the school of guitar players.

God predestinated all to be saved: many are called but few are chosen. Therefore, predestination does not extend beyond what God has done which is perfectly adequate without any hands-on control.

The MARK of their predestination:

Revelation 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians,
        and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee;
        and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee;
        and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

Therefore, THERE IS ONE CLASS GOD DOES NOT CALL: that means an effective call or invitation. This class simply has no need of a "god."

The only evidence that God does not communicate to or through some people still predeatinates them because THEY have had many opportunities to stop denying the Prophets and Apostles by preaching their own sermons and composing their own songs.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: Where does the Bible stand between these two extremes? Paul starts off the book of Ephesians with one long run-on sentence

(in the Greek) that goes from verse three all the way through to verse 14. In that one sentence Paul tells us that God chose us, predestined us (vs. 5), and purposed us (vs. 9), then he repeats it that God predestined us (vs. 11). He emphasizes the incredible work of God on our behalf through Jesus and continued through the Holy Spirit. God is the main actor, the focus of this passage. God’s work, God’s love, God’s planning, God’s sacrifice. He does all of this on our behalf, but God is the focus.

From prepositional phrases we grasp that the Spirit OF Christ is Christ's own spirit: we have a spirit but it is not another person. Rather than to lecture about it, the best way to understand the nature of God's dealing with mankind is to read the Scriptures.

See the Father, Son, Spirit passages.

This passage sets the tone for the first half of the book (chapters 1-3) where Paul explains what God has done for us and what that means for us as sons and daughters of God. We need to remember that the flow of thought here is from the identity and activity of God to how that impacts and affects us as His children.

Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us
                                                                \ unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
                                                                  according to the good pleasure of his will,

God PREplanned or knew that we would be adopted by Christ.  However, there is no sense of any strong-arm tactics or personal predestination: baptism was a key event in the adoption process.

I don't believe that you can find the name of a person who is PREdetermined to be righteous or evi and certainly no connection with our eternal destiny: God predestinated us "to the adoption" by Christ but "many are called and few are chosen" or elected.  I can predestinate or plan the lives of my children and grandchildren but I don't determine how they will turn.

By the sacrifice of Jesus we are made accepted in Jesus Christ but that "justification" means that we are not ceremonially impure: that is a major subject of Paul trimming down the Jews.

Ephesians 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace,
        wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood,
        the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Luke 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people
        by the remission of their sins,

What was the eternal Prepurpose?

Ephesians 1:8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Ephesians 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will,
        according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

The predestinated purpose:

        Ephesians 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times

       he might gather together in one all things in Christ,

both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

That iincludes the Jews and Gentiles in the heavenly kingdom.

Ephesians 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross,

having slain the enmity thereby:

Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come,

God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Galatians 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law,

that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons,

God hath sent forth the Spirit "OF" his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

I believe that is what was predestinated but not a personal PRE DETERMINED destiny to heaven or hell. God always predestinates Good: He could not do otherwise and BE Good.

When Paul was speaking of Jacob

Notice what Paul says "not so hard to understand" if you check back to see there were TWO NATIONS involved.

Galatians 4:21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
Galatians 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons,
        the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
Galatians 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh;
        but he of the freewoman was by promise
Galatians 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants;
        the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
Galatians 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia,
        and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem  which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: Paul starts off by telling us what God has done for us in the “heavenly realms” by giving us “every spiritual blessing” (vs. 3). This statement is made in the context of a world where the heavenly realms were filled with spiritual forces that were opposed to people and threatened them on a daily basis.

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

Colossians 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven,

Colossians 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be
        partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness,
        and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood,
        even the forgiveness of sins:
Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

We are not involved in passive resistance: The Word is the Sword of the Spirit or Mind of Christ:

Isaiah 59:15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey:
        and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
Isaiah 59:16 And he saw that there was no man,
        and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm
        brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
Isaiah 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate,
        and an helmet of salvation upon his head;
        and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing,
        and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
Isaiah 59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay,
        fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies;
        to the islands he will repay recompence.
Isaiah 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
Isaiah 59:20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion,
        and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
Isaiah 59:21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD;
        My spirit that is upon thee,
        and my words which I have put in thy mouth,
        shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed,
        nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
The MARK of being redeemed is that the Words of Christ (The Arm) shall NOT depart out of your mouth: if you are writing your own songs and sermons then maybe you have not been redeemed.

Ephesians 6

Eph. 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord,
        and in the power of his might.
Eph. 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God,
        that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
The Wiles or Methods of the Devil, says Jesus, is to speak on their own. The direct command Predestinated by Christ in Isaiah 55 is that the truth cannot be bought or sold.  In Isaiah 58 you cannot do your own pleasure or SPEAK YOUR OWN WORDS. The direct command is to "use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for our learning. Christ words MUST not be replaced by men who compose their own "scripture" or "songs."
Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Isaiah 50:10 Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

[9] For he lives in a city that loves music, the city of the Aeacidae with their clashing spears; [10] and they very much want to foster a spirit familiar with contests. If someone is successful in his deeds, he casts a cause for sweet thoughts into the streams of the Muses. For those great acts of prowess dwell in deep darkness, if they lack songs, and we know of only one way to hold a mirror up to fine deeds: [15] if, by the grace of Mnemosyne with her splendid headdress, one finds a recompense for toils in glorious song. [17] Skillful men know the wind that will come on the day after tomorrow, and they do not suffer loss through the love of gain. The rich man and the poor man alike travel together to the boundary of death.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: 1 So for us to have “every spiritual blessing” is for God to be in complete control of the chaos of the “heavenly realms.” Paul goes on to tell us that Christ will unify both heaven and earth (vs. 10) which was unheard of. To the Greeks, heaven was a place of absolute perfection and earth was a place of absolute corruption; matter was bad and spirit was good. Paul tells them that God will unify and sanctify matter and spirit in Jesus.

Because God loved us, because He has called us to be adopted as His children,
        because of the sacrifice of Jesus,
        and because of the Holy Spirit;
        we are in the vanguard of this unification of heaven and earth.

See, the Greeks were right, in a way. This world has been corrupted and is broken, full of evil, and good does come to us from heaven. As Paul put it, “creation groans” under the curse of sin and death (Romans 8:22). We desperately desire for the harsh reality of a cursed world to be replaced with the spiritual blessings, the way of heaven.

However, it was not DISABLED: People were corrupt and dead in their OWN SINS. Calvinists might say that they cannot even hear the Word.  It is true that we cannot be saved without God telling us that we need to be saved and how to be saved.  The gospel is the SEED or Power to salvation. God plants the seed when the Evangelists go out and SOW.

GOD FOREKNEW OR KNEW BEFORE THE JEWS: He did not PREdetermine that the infant in your womb was doomed to burn in hell. The Gentiles were always under the Abrahamic Covenant: they were not lost because "lostness" is caused by violation of the Law of Moses in this sense.  Outside of Judaism people were judged on the basis of their acceptance of God and the practice of social justice.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
        and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Matthew 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Matthew 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Therefore, a Gentile was acceptable because they obeyed the principles of justice and righteousness:
Acts 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
Being accepted or righteousness means that people live right and just in their own civil world. The are able to HEAR and obey the gospel.  Unless you want to say that God forces people to fear Him and forces people to work righteousness.
NOT A HINT OF GOD PICKING OUT INFANTS TO BURN IN HELL
THE PROPHECY:
Is. 49:1 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far;
        The LORD hath called me from the womb;
        from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
Is. 49:2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword;
        in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me,
        and made me a polished shaft;
        in his quiver hath he hid me;
Is. 49:3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Is. 49:4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain:  yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.
Is. 49:5 And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb
         to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him,

        Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD,
        and my God shall be my strength.
There was no one righteous enough to be saved especially the Jews whose record we know. Jacob had gone astray even at Mount Sinai.  After the captivity and death sentence had been carried out, Christ would come and redeem or buy back that small remnant.

Notice the two GROUPS which is always the meaning of PREDESTINATED purpose.

And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
........[1] and to restore the preserved of Israel:
........[2] I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles,
........[3] that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Isa 49:6

Which predestinated purpose:

        Ephesians 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times

       he might gather together in one all things in Christ,

both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

The Iraelites SPLIT OFF from the Gentiles when they ignored the direct command of God to become a blessing.  Instead they decided to murder all of the Gentiles.

Therefore, God ALWAYS purposed that through Abraham people would be one people.

Salvation is Yeshuwah! God chooses those who DO NOT repudiate Him by THEIR OWN SINS.

Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One,
        to him whom man despiseth,
        to him whom the nation abhorreth,
        to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship,
        because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel,
        and he shall choose thee. Isa 49:7

Why would all Calvinist miss that simple definition of whom and why God planned to bring a small remnant of JEWS to Christ. Maybe they have been predestinated because they do not love the truth and have been sent strong delusions.

We Repeat:
The Iraelites SPLIT OFF from the Gentiles when they ignored the direct command of God to become a blessing.  Instead they decided to murder all of the Gentiles.

Therefore, God ALWAYS purposed that through Abraham people would be one people.

Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us
        unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
        according to the good pleasure of his will,

Would God predestinate people who had never done anything wrong to be REJECTED for adoption to Jesus Christ?

Israel fell into bondage because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai: that did not prevent the godly Jews and Gentiles to live righteously and practice social justice. Some Jews believe that the synagogue existed any time God disclosed His Will to people. Since Abraham was not a Jew, this is probably true. The bondage was imposed because of the sins of the Israelite people.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: Paul ends his run-on sentence with hope. The Holy Spirit is a seal, a deposit, and a guarantee of what is yet to come (vs. 14).

The SEAL is OUR spirit which has been made holy: 2 Corinthians 3 shows that the Jews would not be able to read or hear the Old Testament until they TURNED, converted or were baptized into Christ: this would give them A holy spirit or A good conscience, consciousness or a co-perception of the Word.   The purpose for all people wash:

Luke 1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest:
        for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
Luke 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people
        by the remission of their sins,

Luke 1:78 Through the tender mercy of our God;
        whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
        to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Says Walter Scott: we know that we have A holy spirit when we see ourselves living under a spiritual influence:

Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith,
        wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation,
        and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The SEAL is a visible-audible not to be mistaken proof:

The seal has to be something by which godly people can be protected so that their salvation is guarantined.  The seal is almost always A holy Spirit which gives one access to the Word of God. In a negative sense?

Sphragis (seal) occurs in the New Testament sixteen times. Of these, thirteen are in the Apocalypse; and always denote a public mark or external sign, such as the seal upon a letter. The instrument by which a visible mark or impression is made is literally a seal. This seal has an inscription upon it; and therefore we have the instrument, the inscription, and the impression made by it, all denominated "seal." They are, however, all visible. The instrument, the inscription, and the impression on the wax or on the paper, are called seals. Metaphorically it denotes secrecy, and is so used in the Apocalypse. It also imports confirmation.

The seal of the Spirit was then a public sign, mark,
        or pledge that God had sent his Son--that Jesus had sent the Apostles;
        and on their [117] converts it was a sign or a pledge that God had received them as his people.

Alexander Campbell:

God has chosen men to salvation through (or by) holiness of spirit;

not through the holiness of HIS Spirit,
        but through the holiness of their spirit.

When Jesus prayed (John xvii.) for the sanctification or holiness of his disciples,   it was through the truth: "Sanctify them through the truth; thy word is truth."
The belief of the truth is, therefore, by Paul associated with this holiness or sanctification of spirit.

The Spirit of God is frequently denominated in these days, "the Sanctifier." Let it be granted that it is the Spirit that sanctifies or sets apart men to God, still it must be argued from the Record  that he sanctifies them only through the truth or gospel believed.
A sanctified unbeliever is inconceivable;and, as "without holiness [or sanctification of spirit] no man can see the Lord;so, without faith, there can be no holiness, and no action acceptable to God.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: For all the blessings we’ve received, for our adoption into God’s family, and God’s choosing of us, the unification of heaven and earth has not yet happened. Christ is not yet Lord of all, but He will be. Creation is not yet free from the curse of sin and death, but it will be. We are not yet “holy and blameless” (vs. 4), but we will be. We have a promise; we have the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit guarantees the promise of God, that we will one day be holy and blameless. The Greek word for “deposit” here is arrabon which originally meant “engagement ring.” By the time of Paul it meant any type of deposit that would guarantee an outcome. We don’t know for sure, but since Paul talks about the church as the bride of Christ later in Ephesians (5:23ff), it’s not too outlandish to think that he would start by reminding us that the church is betrothed to Jesus and the Holy Spirit Himself is the engagement ring.

The seal has to be something by which godly people can be protected so that their salvation is guarantined.  The seal is almost always A holy Spirit which gives one access to the Word of God. In a negative sense?

When Jesus promised "another Comforter" He didn't speak of a "heteros" but different in some respects: Jesus was glorified and went to the Father where He received that Holy Spirit state which we shall receive when our body is changed into a spiritual body. He returned--as promised--on the day of Pentecost and "poured out what you see and hear."  When the Spirit Lord appeared to Paul He said "I am Jesus of Nazareth."  John said that the "Comforter" was Jesus Christ the Righteous: that is Jesus of Nazareth whom God made to be both Lord and Christ Who has received His post-resurrection state.  No classical trinitarian ever thought of the Spirit OF God or the "breath" of God as a separated person.

Alexander Campbell: All persons sanctified to God to any high office or function, were anointed, and thus consecrated to his special service. So all Christians, being priests,

        are anointed or sanctified by the Holy Spirit
        [135] through the obedience of the truth,
        and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus,
        cleansing their consciences from dead works to serve the living God.

In this we find the secret of the most usual epithet of the Spirit. It is the Spirit of holiness, because it is the Spirit of truth. It is the Holy Spirit, because by its influence it makes us holy; and these influences which sanctify are always by and through the truth. When God chose men to salvation, it was through sanctification of spirit; and as a means to this, it was through the belief of the truth.

The predestination we see in the first chapter of Ephesians is the predestination of love. God is saying to His church: “I knew you and I wanted you. I loved you and I chose you. I have called you and betrothed you.” That doesn’t sound like the predestination of a tyrant who is controlling his vassals, but the hope of a God who fills us with hope. It is the hope of a God who will redeem a fallen, broken world— who has already begun to redeem this world.

It is still the dogma of predestination of individuals: if He knew, wanted, choose, called and betrothed any individuals before they existed then he did NOT want, love, choose, call or betroth all of the rest.

James Wood 21st Century Christian: Predestination may not make perfect sense. There may still be tension between how much God knows and how much free will human beings have. But for Paul, in the letter to the Ephesians, predestination is all about hope. He’s writing about the hope we have because of God’s blessing, the hope we have because of Jesus’ sacrifice, and the hope we have because of the gift of the Holy Spirit. I don’t know if our dog finding us was predestined, but I do know that we offered her hope when she had none. God offers you hope.

Points to Ponder:

1. What conversations have you had about predestination in the past? Did your understanding of predestination create positive or negative feelings?

2. Is there a difference between individual predestination and the predestination of a community or group of people (such as the church)? How does that affect your understanding of predestination?

3.    What place does free will have in a conversation about predestination? How do we reconcile our ability to choose with God’s foreknowledge?

4.    Think of the songs we sing about heaven. What message do those songs send about the relationship between the spiritual and the physical?

5.    What do you think it means that Jesus will unite heaven and earth? How do you think the physical and the spiritual realms can be united?

6.    What do you think about the Holy Spirit as an engagement ring? How does it make you feel to be betrothed to Jesus?
